... I compared the /Tilecache of my old 8796 installation (which for some reason is also still full of .JSD files) ... Unless somebody maliciously deleted my .STI files (unlikely!), the only reasonable explanation is that the game does accidentally delete them under some specific conditions: When I looked into /Tilecache after the crash, it was full with over a hundred .JSD files, but now it only contains the 14 .STI files. Meaning there must be some automatic cleanup going on, and I would think that's a good suspect.

In a plain JA2-Installation (from CD, Steam, etc.), inside Data\Tilecache should be 137 elements. Most of them .jsd and also some .sti.

All those .jsd-files you see in Data\Tilecache are therefore already there in the original JA2.

When copying the content of the SCI into the original JA2-Installation, the stuff in SCI will either just be added, or overwrite existing stuff (20 or 21 overwrites for me).

As for the SCI-files in Data\Tilecache (those 14 .sti), those will be just added. So, after copying content of SCI over original JA2, in Data\Tilecache should be 151 elements (137+14).

The .jsd-files in Data\Tilecache are untouched from original JA2-Installation.

The .jsd are defining the "structure" of .sti-graphics. The ones in Data\Tilecache probably are mostly for "structure" of dead stuff.
Like, "dead cow lying arround", give it a structure so we can't move through graphic of dead cow like it was thin air. And so on.

In short, those .jsd are needed and should be there in a full 1.13-Installation (JA2-original-Installation plus content of JA2-1.13-SCI = full 1.13-Installation).

If you miss those .jsd, my only guess is that they, for whatever reasons, are missing in your original JA2. There should be no such thing as auto-deleting files by the game (no auto-cleanup or whatever).
At least, it would be the first I heard of and I never experienced something alike.

I don't know, what's going wrong on your side, but I suggest a fresh install, starting with fresh original JA2. At least, that's what I would do with such strange things happening.

Data\Tilecache
All right, I found what's happening!... confused

For some reason, well, most likely because I'm on Unix and letter case matters, I have in my /Data folder two (2) /Tilecache folders, or more precisely one /Tilecache and one /TILECACHE!...

Windows obviously can't tell them apart, and apparently randomly picks one, actually the original one (with the .JSD files), while the new .STI files were hidden in the other folder!

I had assembled the game under Linux (unzipped a vanilla JA2 installation, copied the JA2-1.13 files over it, then moved the result to the WinXP VM), and apparently while doing this, this case mismatch happened, and instead of merging the old and new /Tilecache folders I actually ended up with both of them.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Sorry for the alert. speechless

Does the latest developmental build (20th may one I think) include any AI improvements over the base game (ie. similar to a patch that was made for 7609)?

The may one is not the latest build, it's just the latest available on Depri's, for info how to get the newer versions, well, check this thread we're in big grin

If you're talking about 7609 as in Seven's +AI mod, then the answer is yes, no, maybe cheeky Seven added some of his AI tweaks into the standard trunk, but not all of them. So you might just have to give it a try and see how it looks in comparison...

Warning about JA2 1.13(7609) ENG from https://jagged-alliance.pl/plik562/
Currently it's unpatched. You need "JA2_113_UpdateForRelease7435_English_7609.exe", extract it to extracted "ja2_1.13(7609)_eng.7z" and apply the zPatch.bat (fastest way). Bug since 2014 suprised .

Update is here: https://storage.rcs-rds.ro/links/4729f8d6-f44b-42b7-aa3e-e0ddc6deead6?path=%2FJA_2%2Fv1.13_Releases%2FOfficial%2FEnglish %2Fv7435%2FUpdate

Edit:
Of course it is not "critical" but need "zzToolP.patch" to be apply (modifing 2x Ja2_Options.INI & 2x MercProfiles25.xml files). Files affected (since 2014):

JA2 1.13(7609) PL/ENG - affected

JA2 1.13(7609) GER/RU/FR/CHN - ?

You are refering to the 7609-version from the polish JA2-Forum. If there is anything wrong with it, it might better to let a moderator/adminstrator of the polish forum know (maybe Starchris, if he is still active?). Can't do much about it here.

Regarding 7609, I assembled some information and downloadlinks about it in the starting post of this thread (see following quote) :

Download 7609

https://storage.rcs-rds.ro/links/4729f8d6-f44b-42b7-aa3e-e0ddc6deead6?path=%2FJA_2%2Fv1.13_Releases%2FOfficial

Link to part of Bear's Pit's download-repository where 7609 can be found. Sorted by language, which should match lamguage of your original JA2.
E.g., if you use german CD of JA2 choose german 7435/7609.
Technically, 7609 is an update to 7435. That's why you need to do the install in proper order (see below).

----
(other terms used for 7609-version of 1.13: stable, official, etc.) (see Glossary below for some explanation)

How to use:

step 01: Install your original JA2 (from CD, Steam, GOG or elsewhere)

- since Windows-Vista some folders are "protected", so don't use Program Files, Program Files (x86), etc.
- save bet would be not to use C:\\ at all
- you can have multiple instances of JA2, so you may wanna make a copy of original install as template for later use

step 02: Follow link above. Choose language matching your JA2 install. Choose "v7435".

step 03: Inside v7435, choose "JA2_113_FullRelease_"Language"_7435.exe" and download it.

step 03 a: Also in v7435, open folder "Update" and choose "JA2_113_UpdateForRelease7435_"Language"_7609.exe" and download this also.

step 04: The two files you just downloaded are self-extracting-archives ("a zip that extracts itself, so to say"), so don't worry about them being "exe". Only those two files are needed.

step 04 a: First, extract the one with "7435" (run exe, choose path). Either choose path to JA2 install (step 01) or copy extracted files into JA2 install (step 01). Overwrite when asked.

step 04 b: Then, extract the one with "7609" and do the same. Either choose path to JA2 install (step 01) or copy extracted files into JA2 instal (step 01). Overwrite when asked.

step 05: Inside your JA2 install (step 01) there now should be a file "zPatch.bat". Click on this (zPatch.bat). A DOS-Window will pop up. Confirm with hitting any key when asked.

step 06: If you consider this an annoying way to install, you may wanna make a copy of the result as a future template (e.g. for use with 7609-mods).

[NOTE] Most mods are developed on a specific language (german, russian, english, etc.). Using, eg., an english mod on a german JA2, will in most cases result only in a language mix. If you still run into language based problems, you may wanna try to get an english JA2 from Steam or GOG (it's rather cheap). Since most mods are either english or an english translation is available for them, this might be worth it.

Get a 7609-SCI (Single-Click-Installer)

If you wanna give it a try, here you find an already fully assembled 7609, including updated GameDir (SVN-GameDir - branch official 2014) and therefore more fixes 7609 SCI (eng) (fully assembled). With this 7609-SCI you won't need to do the above, just download and unzip to get a full 7609 (eng). In the thread I also try to explain what I've done to assemble those files. Might be useful, if you plan to do this yourself with another language version.

----

Anybody who wants to save the hussle with patching 7435 to 7609 could also take a look at "Get a 7609-SCI" (or the 7609-link in my signature).

I still fail to see the difference between your suggestion and the install-instructions for 7609 from my very first post in this thread.
Even the links used by both of us are leading to the same place to get 7435 and the patch (update) to 7609.

But, ok. Fine. We both agree that for getting 7609 you'd usually need to download 7435, update it to 7609 and run the zbatch.

And since this an annoying way to instal, I recommend to a.) make a copy after doing this or b.) try my self-assembled 7609-SCI (follow link in my signature for more information)

A look back:

Until the download-links broke down last year, the most popular source for 7609 was http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218345/Installation. As you can see, even back at the time it was already mentioned that you need to apply the patch and zbatch for a full 7609.

A look ahead:

Looking arround the JaggedAllianceCenter (pl), I came across this 7609-version with bugfixes. Haven't used it myself, but this may could be what you are looking for JA2 1.13(7609) + Bugfixes v8281 (09: Modyfikacje » JA2 1.13 - Modyfikacje » JA2 1.13(7609) + Bugfixes v8281)

Anyway, to solve any possible problems with files from polish forum, I still would suggest to better ask directly there. Only the guys arround there are able to answer questions about their uploads and they are also the ones that could provide a fix/solution for it. That is, if they get informed themselves about possible issues.

Downloaded the file myself to asure we use the same.

Installed original ja2.

copied content from download over original

choosed matching vfs-config and ini

started

---

It's working for me. Keep in mind, that the versions from my mediafire are already assembled. They already include all nescessary UC-files and the 1.13-version from their name (8675+UC-stuff or 8684+UC-stuff). No need to instal 8684 before, it's already included. No need to put UC-stuff inside, it's already there (and adjusted to version).

---

If it still doesn't work for you, try to use Sevens Modpack. Last I looked, it also contains UC-1.13. His modpacks also only require JA2-original, anything else is already in them.

well i did exact same thing (copied content came from your file SCI_UC-1.13_v4.6_(10.05.2019)_on_JA2_v1.13_r8684_g2576 over my original ja2 gold folder and overwrited) but like i said it didnt work for me then i did that manually and it worked. i am using ja2 gold (1.12) maybe it is because of that? but like i said it works if i manually download these but not your version...

anyway the point that i already asked and nobody answered yet. why do i need to play it with 8684 instead 7609? what are the biggest differences? i can not find any changelogs between these versions. but more than that it has been years and we need a new stable version right?

Hm, I'm at a loss how to solve this.
I tried my version with a.) english JA2 from Steam (which I assume is the Gold-Version) and b.) with german JA2 from CD (v1.02) and c.) the german version patched to v1.05
It worked with all of those three base-installations.
Tried with Win7 and Win10, same result with both Win-versions and a.) - c.)
And since it's working with all six constellations I could test, I assume that nothing is wrong with the file itself.
It's rather likely that some other variable (e.g.: setup, version you use, error while downloading, etc.) is causing the problem.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I doubt what's happening at your side, it's just that I can't reproduce it on my side.
And therefore I can't provide any further solution, sorry.

But since you got it running anyway, it seemed already be solved for you.

----

UC was first modded for JA2-vanilla (the original JA2, not 1.13)
Then, years later, the user wil473 updated UC to 1.13, resulting in UC-1.13
He did several versions. Not only, but also the 7609-version (7609 is a standard base for many mods).
The latest version he provided himself is the one for 8675.

Which version you use, is totally up to you.

7609:

+ 7609 is a standard version for many mods
+ therefore many players are used to features included
+ there is an alternative exe for 7609 by seven (7609+AI)
- it doesn't contain features added to standard 1.13 after 2014

8675:

+ has a bunch of more features than 7609
- players are not fanmiliar with those newer features
- the alternative exe by seven won't work with this (only 7609-mods)
- contains a bug (sometimes merc stand up when under fire, quite annoying)

8684:

+ same as 8675, but bug fixed
- same as any recent version, if not used to it, players get confused with features

----

If choosing 8675/8684, it might be helpful to play those versions first without any mod to get familiar with it.

It's seven years work by dozens and more people (2014-2021), so any "brief" summary must fail.
In the starting posts of this thread, I linked to a bunch of feature-descriptions. Those mostly contain with which version they are added.
Another problem is, that there are some features that have been in 7609 and are still in latest versions, but have been changed.

Some things I often hear:

Many players are puzzled because MobileMilitia is handled totally different.
The Poison system is no longer included, replaced by disease.
If and how fortification works, differs.
Some items are added for features (e.g. splinter to fix broken leg)
Maria-Angel quest can be continued (not sure if this works with UC-maps)
Interactive actions on maps (drink from watewr-tap, hack-pc, etc.)
Enemy tanks in patrols pssible.
Starting Cash is no longer ion Ini-File. Can be changed in Difficulty-Settings instead.
etc, pp.

More details see Changelogs (those are part of many JA2-SCI), but that's probably too detailed if you don't know what to look for.

Extract from SVN-Changelog Source (exe)

Extract from SVN-Changelog GameDir

I don't think we will ever see another version called "stable". 1.13 is under constant development, deciding randomly on a version to branch of as "new stable" wouldn't provide any benefit.
Any modder that would like to mod versions above 7609 could easily do so, but as it has turned out, we haven't seen many (as far as I know, it's only DSM in all these years)

thank you for writing detailed message there. i assume i will start to play with 7609 then because i dont use any of those features you wrote above (fortification, posion, disease, drink water, hacking/intel).

btw i have played and finished vanilla campaign with the latest version (8796) last summer. and the only bug i encountered there is no deidranna in both her private room in shelter (the one with auto rocket launcher) and throne room. the music was calm so there must be a bug about this.

Ok, I think I found what's causing your problem.

This:

"i can not open the game it just shows ja2 window title on taskbar for a few sec then closes"

is happening when you use the Win10-Fix by Someone64 and didn't get rid of former Win10-Fixes (dll-files, reg-fix, etc). In his readme he is mentioning that this can cause problems (the one you describe, sometimes insisting that window-mode needs 16-bit without even running window-mode, etc.)

It isn't related to my file, so that's why I couldn't reproduce it.

If you can't get rid of former fixes, as an interim solution, you could try to rename the exe.

First let me thank you for keeping the game up to date and releasing new SCI's.
I'd also like to mention that this thread needs more exposure. Depri's is over 1 year old and needs to go into archive and this thread needs to be pinned instead as it points to actual latest versions. Lots of people still think that version in the Depri's thread is latest and can't really find this thread since its in tips and tricks section - completely unintuitive and weird place to find it.

@Uriens

There was some reasoning behind not moving Depri's stuff. It has been arround for ages and therefore tons of mod-descriptions and threads have linked to Depri's place for downloading latest SCI. All those links would be dead, if Depri's Thread would be moved.

This thread ended up in "Solutions, Tips and Spoilers" because I thought it would be a good place. Something like, providing a solution to find latest SCI, some Tips on how to instal and where to find further informations and links to feature-description, mods and other stuff. So, well, I'm to blame where it is shy

It has been made "sticky", so it at least is always among the first threads in "Solution, Tips and Spoilers". In the SCI itself, the link has been added to "Download latest..txt" and "Additional Information...txt". Me and others have added the link to our signature and I've advertized it a lot on Discord.

To asure players still could find latest version, if ending up at Depri's place, some of the text was changed and a link to this thread was added there

Quote:

Having now cleared the formalities, lets get to the content:

1.13 SCI
This is the basic SCI package like several users offered over the years. It contains all the latest bells and whistles added to the development trunk.
>>>Download!<<<< - MS OneDrive on hold since May 2020, more recent versions see link below
>>>Archive<<< - Kermi's FTP mirror, older versions can be found here if one drive is down
please check file size before downloading, the latest versions are around 380MB

How to get: latest 1.13, 7609, feature-descriptions and more - links to further download-sources for 1.13, 7609+AI, 7609-SCI, mods, feature-descriptions and more
--

But yes, seeing how often I come accross the question "Where to find latest 1.13?", this might not be enough. Might be worth to ask if it could get a place at "frontpage", linking to this thread, but I'm pretty sure people will still ask ...

I also just want to give praise for the very clear instructions in this thread, very good work. I am on my approximately bi-annual urge to replay JA2 1.13 and like every time before have completely forgotten the hows/wheres/whens(?)/whys(??) of finding the latest 1.13 versions and what goes with which, installation steps etc, etc. This couldn't be easier to understand, thanks so much. Coupled with some more general instructions I found on github.com/aimnas/1.13_starter_documentation, it should make setting up for my next playthrough a doddle. And I have even bookmarked these links, so in two years time when I next want to play and have forgotten even typing this, I will at least have a chance in finding this thread again, <waves> at future self.

Now when bodytypes code added into the trunk I would like to try it out. A new SCI 2614/9154 is needed. Could someone do this for XP 32? I asked Kitty but he doesn't answer.

I was able to compile it using not yet committed patch from discord, you can try Ja2_r9153_xp.exe if you are interested.

Thank you for the link to SCI.
I installed and tried to run with Ja2 exe but there was an error - invalid Win 32 system application.
However, I started with JA2 r9143 but the Bodytypes did not appear. Do I need to change something in the settings or do I need a new exe for Win 32?

Hi all,

a couple of issues/questions related to the different install possibilities listed in the OP:

1. attempting to launch UC (w/ Kitty's 7609 SCI + Urban Chaos-1.13 v4.50 Full 20141222 + Data-UC) with the latest JA2+AI.exe (ja2_7609en+AI_r2349) gives me a runtime error (Assertion Failure [Line 329 in fileStrategic Movement Costs.cpp] Incorrect traversal data 'SOUTH' for sector row=8 column=9 in MovementCost.xml). I must have done something wrong in the install process but I can't find what I've done wrong exactly. Launching UC with the regular ja2.exe doesn't give me that runtime error.

2. how would I go about if I wanted to shift UC mercs stats back to their vanilla stats? I always hated those stat changes. Not a huge deal though, I can live with them.

3. how can I change Arulco Revisited music and background screens back to vanilla ones? Not a big fan of the new ones. Once again, not a huge deal, it's just cosmetic (and down to personal preferences ofc).

1. This error needs to be fixed in XML. My 7609 modpack has UC version that should work with +AI, you can take needed file from there. Compare xml file with winmerge if needed.
2. Check Data-UC-113\TableData\MercProfiles.xml, it's all there, you should be able to copy+paste stats for needed mercs from stock 1.13, just don't change anything mod related like sector placement for NPCs.
3. Go to Data-AR\Music, rename or delete files, the game will use default music from Data\Music.slf
Backgrounds are in Data-AR\Interface\OptionsScreenBackground*.sti and Data-AR\Loadscreens

Thanks for the (very) quick reply!

1. I need to extract the Mods\Data-UC113.7z from your modpack and then get the XML, is that correct? But which XML are you talking about (or are there several I need to check)?

2. thanks.

3. done, thanks! Also got rid of the new main menu background.

Yes, take the file from 7z archive and use it to fix xml bug in your installation.
Since your error mentions MovementCost.xml, this is the file I would try to fix.

I downloaded the Modpack from Seven.
1)How can I play UC113? I just can select vfs.config.UC. Is this the right one? When yes, how can I change the ini. settings like Train Elite Militia or Max IMP Skill points?
2)And another question. What is the Level Progression? I think I read someting about the weapons progression. Can I change there something special or is it just to use with no aditional possible changes fot its setting?
3)Are there any recommendations regarding the drop all settings or the supported NCTH setting(LP, UC?) for each mod?
And sorry for the not perfect english.....

1. Ja2.ini says:
; JA2 1.13 Urban Chaos
VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.UC.ini
You can change ini settings in data-1.13, mod folder and Data-User (which has highest priority).
2. What is the Level Progression? Do you have a screenshot or something.
3. Drop all will quickly give you better weapons and equipment but later you will have thousands of items in sectors and it kind of ruins game item availability balance since you have too much and too early. I would not recommend it unless you clearly know what you do.
The mods are expected to play with default NCTH setting, there are also some useful tweaks in CTHConstants.ini in Data-User.

1)I already played some mods an know some things like how to change settings with the ini editor. But when I select the vfs.config.UC in the ini editor there is no ini file where i can change settings for UC. I already changed for each ini file from the ini editor the settings for IMP_MAX_ATTRIBUTE but I can´t set the IMP Point in the game above the standard 85 for UC. So I don´t know how to change these setting for UC. For other mods it works.

2) For example the mod AR+LP which is to chose from the ini editor.

I don´t know how to post screenshot. I can´t just copy it in. If you could tell me how to I could post some screeenshots.

To be honest, I have no idea what that Jenkins server thing is.

All I know is that, when I click on the link (I think it is link, at least) fort he latest stable build (message, I assume, marked as #784) I get the link to download some file that has word unstable in it.
It has been some 10 years since I had installed the new version of 1.13,but I think I'll stick with that 7zip place.

It's just an automated setup that bundles newest gameDir and .exe revisions together so it doesn't have to be done manually. The latest stable build in there means the latest build that didn't give errors upon building, it doesn't mean the old "stable" JA2 build. You'll usually want to download the latest successful artifact from there, unless you're after a specific revision.

The "unstable" on the filename does refer to the development trunk of 1.13, and yeah it's a bit unfortunate how easily those two can be mixed up.
