I was frustrated with how awful the game runs on Windows 10 and spent like 8 hours yesterday looking for solutions, including using things like DXWnd and other stuff. Eventually, I found DXWrapper from here.

I made a preconfigured fix using it that can just be installed simply by putting it inside the same folder as JA2.exe. No need for any registry tweaks (the ones from the official Windows 10 fix can be removed from registry if you wish) and you don't even need to run the game as admin or change any compatibility settings in the exe's properties. It also sets the core affinity to single core and doesn't have issues with alt-tabbing (I haven't tested if it still breaks if you alt-tab for LONG periods of time, which causes the game to permanently freeze but it seems fine so far).

Please run the game in fullscreen as it seems to immediately crash if run in windowed mode with this fix. You can still make the game run in a fake windowed mode (the game still thinks it's running at fullscreen) with the instructions contained in the readme.

Please download the file from this link to get the zip containing the fix.

If your game is running very slow due to the fix, here's an alternate ini file (just overwrite the one from the zip) that makes the game run in real fullscreen mode without converting Direct Draw to DX9. The game runs way faster and has all the fixes but you can't run it in a borderless/bordered window and the game will change your entire screen resolution if you're not running it at native resolution: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v5vFsWwEN8EheRyPil0I-boTD1efsMC0/view?usp=sharing

EDIT: There's a problem where the game's exe doesn't properly terminate when you press quit to close the game and you have to kill it from task manager. There's a possible fix I'll test out and I'll update this post when I find out how.
EDIT2: Link updated with the problem fixed.

I am going to try this. I moved my game from an I-5 to an I-7 Windows 10 machine and now it is so slow I can't play it. Also, does anyone know what you can transfer to a new game install from an old one?

I'm almost certain you can just copy paste the entire folder to your new PC and it'll work just the same. I think everything works by relative paths and saves are kept in the user profile folders inside the game's root folder so the game is completely portable. I keep the game in an external drive and can run it no matter what drive letter it is on any Windows PC (or on Linux with Wine).

The only thing that might break is the uninstaller if you installed it with GOG and the registry entries the installer made won't be present. That's no big deal considering you can just delete the folder to uninstall the game.

Thanks. I did actually run the game on my external drive on the new PC, but it was choppy, so I moved it to the secondary drive on the PC, but it was just as choppy there. What I wanted to try was a new install of the latest SCI which I could find, and dump my ja_options_ini and profile over, hoping to keep my custom characters. I don't have a handle on how their progression is handled or transferable to a next adventure, say like UB.

Someone64,

I ran this and it seemed to work pretty well for the most part. However, there seems to be a problem when the RED & YELLOW sector battle summary which comes up when you go into an enemy controlled sector. Should we be using the PERFORMANCE.REG mod or any of the others in conjunction here?

Also, asking to speed up the AI has the opposite effect.

Any guidance would be welcomed!

Thank you!

JP

Sorry for the late reply. If speeding up the AI has the opposite effect, try using the alternate INI file from the first post which runs much faster than the one I included in the main pack. It has some disadvantages as I stated in the first post also but it should help with speeding up the game in general and holding up the speed up key. It's the one I use since the one that allows you to run in borderless windowed seems to greatly slow down the game for me. The alternate INI file makes the game run maybe 2x faster for me so when transitions happen (like when entering a sector with enemies) it doesn't take extremely long.

Please do not use any other fixes in conjunction as they have a strong chance of conflicting with the fixes in the pack I included. Also the reg files are absolutely not needed since the DXWrapper takes care of all of those stuff for you without messing with your registry. I actually tried combining DXWnd (it even comes with its own copy of DXWnd) but it's really jank and I can't get it to play nicely.
