For a good while now it's been bugging me that the JA2 UI is a hodgepodge of 4:3 elements glued together when most monitors nowadays are widescreen. As the lobot animations are nearing completion, updating the UI would be something I'd like to tackle. A good choice imo would be a new UI in 1280x720, since it would scale really nicely to 1080p and further on, and certainly better than the current 1024x768 one for resolutions that are not quite 16:9 but still widescreen.

I imagine this topic has come up before, and I'd like to get information on what would be needed to make a new UI for that resolution? New art obviously to accommodate the wider screen and codework to add the resolution choice, as well as relocating practically every single button the UI has. Is there anything particularly difficult that would be a showstopper or is it more or less just really, really tedious work?

If you make custom interface for 1280x720, maybe leave some place for tactical panel?

I never worked with UI in 1.13, but I don't think there is something more complex than adding new graphics, new UI mode and a lot of tedious work correcting locations.

Sure, that was definitely on my mind to have in there.
That actually would be the nice thing about this. We could rethink some of the original UI pain points with the increased screen area that the wider res offers. I would still want to keep it very jagged like, but quality of life improvements should be thought of when redesigning the screens

Is it possible to make bigger minimap for that resolution, if there's enough place for that? Current is too tiny, I even thought of making one of tactical panel's modes to show bigger minimap in +AI.
We could also add some useful buttons like drop/pick up all backpacks etc if there's enough place. Just for players convenience.

Maybe? I've come across the minimap functions but I've never taken a good look at them. Convenience buttons would definitely be a nice addition. For instance, "select all squads in one sector for movement" in strategic map is something I keep wishing the game had.
