So, what equipment would you like to see in the game?

I'm thinking it would be nice to have some more old rifles, like the Garand or Kar-98 and such. Hunting rifles too, as that's what people keep around their homes.

And I'd also like to see an equipment selection screen at the start, to make it possible to get some top-notch equipment to start with. After all, I'd rather hire Magic and Shadow and give them high-end rifles and armor, than get 6 low-end mercs with the default equipment. Or even get the low-end mercs and give them rifles instead of revolvers.

See, while the old rifles would be cool... no merc in their right mind would still be taking a Garand into battle... or only a pistol for that matter...

I would like to see more modern guns, or perhaps more modifications that could be done to them...

Does it really matter what sort of rifle you take into battle in real life? After all, one shot from any rifle is all it takes to kill someone.

In battle you need something that's going to have decent ammunition feed, reliable firing and ease of operation. A clip-fed top-loading rifle is going to be a disadvantage to a soldier in an assault against enemies with full auto assault rifles with box magazines.

GPMG brings up a valid point that you'd want a reliable, easy to use weapon in battle. Of course chances are that if you were in real battle you'd probably want to select a weapon that uses the same type of ammunition as other members in your unit. That is to say if everyone is using 5.56mm rifles but one guy is using a 7.62 NATO rifle, he's pretty much to the creek if he runs low on ammuntion because he can just grab a clip or two from the guy next to him.

I've never been to war, Pavel. But from what I have read (In particular the book "Black Hawk Down", which chornicles a modern battle), not every caliber will kill with one shot. It seems that the .223/5.56 caliber has very little stoping power against a determined enemy.

But then again, like I've said, I've never been in combat so I may be wrong...

Maybe the mercs wouldn't want to use the old guns, but there's loads of them in people's homes, and poor countries militias/armies.
As for the stopping power, big bullets stop enemies much more easily than small ones. But they have more difficulty penetrating body armor, so that's a trade-off. That's why big caliber handguns are popular for home defense, you're not likely to encounter armored opposition. Unlike the military, which expects the enemy to be equipped as they are, which means at least some body armor...

Concerning one-shot-kills, it depends on the hit location, and the enemy's determination. Even the most determined enemy won't be able to go forward if a bullet severs his spine, and a flesh wound on the arm will put a reluctant enemy out of action.

I believe that most soldiers would either become attached to a particular weapon and likely not change, then again maybe he would if a serious upgrade were available... and maybe he would hang on to both!
I also think he would need to consider where his ammo supply is coming from... Unlike in JA in war you don't always have time to loot your fallen enemies... Maybe they dont have large amounts of ammo... and maybe your unit would frown on useing an enemies weapon... not sure though ... Just my opinion

I know in the US army they preach that your weapon is part of you

As far of the looting of an enemy's weapon, that goesm against US Army Standard Operating Pratice, as, say, an AK-74 has a very different sound than an M-16 and this can tend to make you a casualty of friendly fire in less-than-optimal visiblity conditions

Hey I'm new here and and english is not my native language so excuse any spelling errors.
But what I would love to see in a new Jagged Alliance game is homemade explosives and such. Example combine a bottle with any flameable liquid to create a molotov like explosive. In about the same way as a rod and spring made a gun accelerator. Now thats what I would like to see. I don't know any new guns the old one where fine by me. So as long as there are plenty of them the type of snipers pistols sub and machineguns don't really matter to me...

There is a program called WEDIT. It is a weapons editor. There is a Graphic User Interface for it, but I haven't used it. I still use the basic program.

The base program will produce a text file containing details about items in the game. You can load this file into Excel, edit an save - and then plug back into the game. I work with Excel every day so the GUI has no appeal to me.

If you don't have Excel, you will probably need the GUI.

The program does more than just edit weapons. It allows you to change the weapons, ammunition, armour, explosives and other items in the game.

It also has records for combining items. For example, a record that says if you combine Compound 18 with a Spectra Vest you get a Compound 18 Spectra Vest.

So, you could change some items that aren't used much into somethings like a bag of fertilizer or other substances you can use to make bombs.

You could then change one of he types of explosives to be your improvised bomb. I think there is a record that says a platinum watch combined with a copper wire produces a detonator - as a way of improvising a detonator.

I think you can still find the WEDIT program and the GUI on the Jagged Alliance Galaxy website.

Good luck.

Be careful with the GUI. It acts like it does far more than it really does. While this is better than nothing, if you can use Excel I think you'll be pleased with it's results.

The best system by far is Madd Mugsy's 1.13 mod. You can really make a 'hot rod' weapon/item mod with this. And the goofy stacking errors are almost nonexistant.
Take a look through that part of the forum first because while it is far more thorough it also requires far more work.

Did you tried the Urban Chaos mod yet? You can make molotov cocktails combining a rag and a bottle of alcohol.

kato. Yup, the whole airstrike thing was just a fantasy in my mind. I too think the game is "too small" for airstrikes.

But I would really love to se a more coherent and belivable armed enemy army.

Airstrikes could probably be added simply with a enemy talking on the radio to a comand center. Then you would hear the sounds of planes overhead during that pause while the computer thinks up it strategy. Then you could be hit with Gas, Neapalm, or an expolsion of course. The explosion
part of what you guys are talking about are being done as ground explosions in some mod work I've seen triggered by an enemy tripping a switch that triggers an alarm. So I believe it is very do-able
