Let' start with any wilderness sectors and work from there. You can use any original tileset or try out my extended ones available by request.

Any named terrain tileset would be the ones to start with. Ex.: desert, tropical, coastal, lush, mountain, swamp, farm or generic. Even snow if you want to. Use whatever the most current version of the map editor is.

Place everything except items and merc tab stuff (enemies, civilians, militia and bloodcats). Lights are optional.

Send all map entries to new links posted below or I can make up a new mailbox.

Wherever you send it, write a description of your map, what sector to replace and include it as an attachment. Either .zip or .rar if you need to compress. I will make a overhead screenshot of each one and post them all on a new page in my website. Anyone can vote by using the same email above.

Modders needing mapping help can also send in requests. Whomever gets the new maps can make all maps available for download.

Let's just have some fun with this. All these new maps should be available for use in anyone's mod or replace the default maps from Arulco if playing the base game.

Any comments or suggestions please let me know.

Is there a limit on the number of maps any one person can submit?

I really want to see this 'take off'.
If nothing else, it will make for a great resource library.

By default, any of my maps (submitted), will be 1.13 687 editor.

Let's get this going people!!

Hello all, I am sorry if this is kind of "off topic" but would gladly participate in the future to these contests.

Sadly enough I found the manual provided for editing maps kind of "very incomplete" and have failed to make maps that worked well. Anyway I haven't stopped trying tho..

In the past (even more offtopic) I made maps for duke nukem 3d and blood (using the build editor) and could find entire tutorials for making them. (resulting in tons of working great maps) But I seem to have trouble finding such tuts for jagged alliance. I'm sure I could create some fairly good/unique maps. If only there were some good tutorials for doing stuff with the editor...

Maybe someone could step in and help us out here? I'm sure there would be more people that would love them too.

Cheers.

Crazybite.

I do not know of the 'very incomplete' manual you refer to, but, I have a pretty good one at:

http://www.badongo.com/file/2783637

And, a set of starter maps:

Good luck.

No limit on map submissions. That's the point for this project, to create a map database for anyone to use. I may even rename the thread in the future. Everyone wins, no losers.

Shed23 has sent me his map editor guide and it is very good and detailed. I see he has made a link for anyone else to get it. Great.

Just make some maps and I will make them available for download. Follow Shed's guide. Any game editor looks worse than it really is. Get familiar with it and let the imagination go.

The only area needing some coverage in his guide is about making schedules. I learned some stuff doing some for civilians and NPC's, but anyone else have some tips let us know.

John if you still have those old Jeremiah's Destiny maps feel free to them to this archive, that is, if they work in 1.13.

Anyway, keep the fight alive!

Simply put.....with the editor.
This comes with the 113 download and can be found in the JA2 main directory.

You can use SVN to download the latest 113. Have a search round the forum for details on how to do this.

You may find the manual for it a reasonable guide, link to which is posted ^ above.

Good luck.

Hey, thanks for the well wishes. I have recorved from my flu/fever/cold caused by bad food. I have also been stressing out big time job hunting. But back on topic.

I have dowloaded all your maps, Shed. Thanks for the submits. I will look for any others shortly. Good to hear from Longshot also. He has made over a hundred maps that I have had for several years.

I want the map submissions to continue as we build up a map database. Should I start a new thread? Probably need to in the near future.

Everyone get and read Shed's guide then play around and experiment with the 1.13 map editor. That's how to learn anything.

Good to hear from you again!

Dunno about a new thread, unless it will be 'stickied' and contain your web link?

I hope to get some serious map making done, but am still plodding on with my mod for the moment.

I wonder, did anyone get any entries?

I didn't want to send any of the stuff from my mod and failed to crank one out for the contest even though I am very much in favor of the return to an opened mapping forum.

It would really be sad to let this potential project slip into the dustbowl.

Very nice AZAZEL.

For what it is worth, I will be altering my mod to reflect the 'can and cannot' enable/disable sectors.
Once this is done, I can make this available to anyone that wants it.
Heck, it will be easy to strip maps out of it to use anyway!!

Should be done in a few days time.
Will post screenshot and link here.

Here is the link for the whole mod of mine:

http://www.badongo.com/file/3199819

34Meg rar file. Has everything that should be needed.

Please bear in mind, that this started way back with the UB editor, changed over to the JA2Beta editor, changed to the latest editor as well as all the tileset alterations etc...

There is a short 'readme' for some explanations contained within the rar.

Worth note:
This is/was to be used with TonsOfGuns and Insane mode.
How it will work with other settings - I have no idea, but should be ok.
You may want to edit A9 for gear. This mod was designed so that you never had to use Bobby Rays or Mine income. BUT, because I have removed some quests (for use in a new idea), I have put the mines back in. All you really have is:
-Altered maps from 'God knows where'.
-Altered existing maps.
-Loads of new ones.

DISCLAIMER:
I have tested very little of the maps, so there could possibly be problems somewhere, I hope not.
From what I have played, it is an absolute pig, so best of luck with it.

Feel free to use it, or parts, as you want.

Well, the mod was designed for Insane mode. That is, weapons and ammo are plentiful. Initially, this was not the case. My son asked for a challenge with 113, so I converted my original to this. Garrison XML has been used fully, hence the pig of a game from the outset.

I found it fun so far. Must try to play this right through myself.

EDIT. Sorry - forgot the preview of the strategic map, see link.
The map looks far better in-game than what it does here.

Is there an actual database for these maps, or is it still getting started? I'd like to contribute, i guess. If you guys could direct me to some info on mapmaking, the utilities and other things i would need to know, that'd be great.

It'd be cool to have a sit where you could preview individual map files and have downloads for them.

I can't get the Map Editor to run. I followed Sheds instructions in setting up the shortcut stuff and all, but when I double click my short cut to map editor all it does is still run in the de-bug mode and the map editor does not come up. What I am doing wrong here?

EDIT: Nevermind. I figured it out. I forgot the the little minus sign before -EDITORAUTO.

When I do a new install of the map editor I just copy/paste my Start Map Editor.exe and it automatically targets the right install.

Try this if you make another install.

I am running Kaiden's mapeditor that comes with 1.13 now. I did notice when I 1st started it up it did not detect the maps in the data folder that I had extracted. But I took Khor's advice from another post here and placed all the extracted maps and radar maps into the 1.13 data folder and ran the mapeditor again and it found them all. How come it does not locate them in the regular data folder?

EDIT: Also that Dragon Unpacker program you suggested Shed works pretty darn slick. Smile Now I don't have to dick around with unself and some of those other useless and hard to understand extracter programs. Smile

EDIT2: I just want to say Shed's manual he wrote for using the map editor is great. Everyone should definately download it and use it, even if your already familular with the editor. Good job on that Shed. Otherwise I would still be trying to figure out how to get the editor to even load. Smile Get Shed's manual from page 1 here in this thread.

MM.

This is strange - I only ever have Maps/RadarMaps in Data, NOT Data 113.
The Map Editor will normally not detect any Maps. It should, however, ask you if you want it to 'create existing' - or something like that!!!

Pleased you like Dragon. I find it the best. It is also upgraded at times. I have petitioned the author for more JA2 functions.

On a side note.
I will probably rip all my maps out of my mod and post them here. Then, hopefully, get around to more map making.

you can have your maps in either the data folder or the custom data folder (assuming your ja2.ini points to your custom data folder)

you also don't need all maps to be extracted, you only need one map file in the maps folder, any others will be loaded/ extracted from the slf when you load/ save them the first time

MM is right though that the maps you can chose from when picking "load new map" are only the ones from the custom data folder. if a map only exists in data and not in the custom data folder, the editor will load it regardless, but you have to type the name in (which shouldn't be that much of a challenge, as the map file names ar usually one character, one number and then .dat)

is considerably faster than the awkward drop-down scroll menu too Wink

this is all strange.

so to edit mpas in custom folder i have to leave one map in DATA so that the editor detects it and loads it. Then i can load maps in custom data by typing their names, when i want to save them i have to use the overwrite function, because otherwise the map gets saved in DATA?

and i still don't understand how at MM the editor found all the maps in custom data and not in regular Data :/ or does he mean by "detect" that he could load them by typing their names and not have them listed ?

what about radarmaps? do i have to copy my custom maps to DATA and the run the "makemaps" command ?

i guess "detect" indicates they were listed in the drop-down menu.
he might have copied them to both folders maybe?

yes, it's quite weird. if you save a map called a9firsttry.dat, it will save it to "data", if you save it as a9 (and a9 exists in custom data folder) it will be saved there.

i've managed to mess up and delete quite a bunch of maps while i tried to harmonise it by placing the latest maps in either folder.

if you have maps using the same name in either folder, it will load the custom data folder map.

it takes some getting used to. i usually save new maps in development with a new file name (to data folder) and once they're final, i save them under the correct file name to my custom data folder, overwriting an existing file.

this only matters if you plan to release your maps. The game will also load custom map files in the "data" folder so for your private use, you don't have to care much to where this gets saved in the end (of course thisis only true for "finalised" maps. in the processe of mapping itself it does obviously matter to find the file you want to modify Wink

That's exactly what I did. Smile You will have take my questions with a grain of salt here, because even after all this time, this is the 1st time I have even attempted to run the map editor. I used to play around with the UB one, but that was many moons ago. So this is all new to me. My testing yesterday was also over a heavily modified version of 1.13. Today I installed a nice clean unmodded version of JA2 Gold and then laid 1.13 on top of that. Now I will start playing with the map editor. Smile

For what it is worth, this is how I 'get around' the problems listed in previous posts.
Assuming a clean install + 113.

1) Create folder 'Maps' in Data folder.
2) Create folder 'Radarmaps' in Data folder.
3) Unpack Maps into Data/Maps.
4) Create Radarmaps, or later, your choice.
5) Create folder on Desktop and ALWAYS copy/paste all your maps and modded maps into this.
6) Ensure that Data 113 DOES NOT have Maps/Radarmaps folders. I find it far easier to deal with one
folder for all maps/radarmaps.
7) All other 'modded' files (ProfDat, xml etc...) copy/paste to your desktop folder.

Regarding step 5.
Everything for a mod of mine gets stored in the desktop folder - copy/paste that is, very regularly.
That way, should a screw-up occur, you have all your stuff safe.
You can also easily access your maps for posting.
There is little or no 'conflicts' with Data and Data 113, for me anyway.

Also, beware of multiple installs. There are some processes that can be compromised by other installs. For the life of me, I cannot remember what it was, but I was modding something quite a while ago and getting nowhere fast. It transpired that data can be leeched (read), from other sources of the same kind and the game 'can' get confused by this. Hope that came across ok. This is a difficult one to describe.

I've only got a custom Data (1.13) for the editor not another install. My original Data-1.13 has some problems with the editor, i must've modified some itesm too much since they always crash it if i attemp to run it. And now that i know that i can use overwrite for saving maps in the custom folder i don't think i'll ahve any problems. (onlyif i forget to modify the .ini before i play the game XD )

Well. My mistake before was, I had forgot to change the (ini) to point to data. It was still set at default 1.13 data. This time around I changed it to data and the maps loaded just fine into the editor. It's little things like that, that will drive you nuts sometimes. Smile

Edit: The Sucker sure likes to CTD alot dosen't it. But overall it seems to work pretty good. And as Shed says...save...save...save... Smile
