Hi,

I don't know if this is the right topic to post but I have used the search function which didn't come up with anything useful (at least not that I saw it).

I'm currently messing around with a couple of tools for JA2 1.13 and currently I'm stuck with the map editor. It loads up fine (I use SVN to keep updated) but as soon as I try to select any tileset to work with it shows this error message:

http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/580/probler8.jpg

What might be causing this?

I might add that I followed instructions of "JA 113 Editor.doc" to set up the editor and I created all the necessary shortcuts and folders (I think xD).

You don't have to use the shortcut anymore, you should have a Map Editor.exe that you can just double-click on. I'm not sure if it would cause this problem though. Try it and let me know.

Thx for the quick reply. (: Loading tilesets now works. Now I'm facing a different problem though... the editor auto-loads sector a9 and I can't seem to exit it (while when I opened it with the shortcut I was able to select which sector to edit.)

Help.

I remember, that John Wright had a homepage for dowloading some of his custom maps. I addition, there was a new (better) b_map.pcx on his page. I desperately need this b_map.pcx (and I'd like to have access to those maps as well). Since he doesn't reply to my PM, I hope someone else here can help me.

cheers, mailor

How has development of 1.13 progressed in terms of permitting som randomization of sectors when starting a new game? It would be nice if one could play the game sort of like a roguelike.

Procedurally generating each sector (not necessarily while actually running the game) is quite a bit less realistic, I would guess.

One other questio I have is, are sector data available in text format? I would like to experiment with procedural generation (I've done a bit of this for other games), but do not have the ability to work with binary files.

Randomization can be done by alternative maps.

I was just thinking... Instead of making brand new maps, why not exploit the alternative map option?

Make slightly different maps (especially city maps) with just small covered changes like different placement of enemies, of mines, equipment etc... So you don't know anything in advance.

I posed this question last week and got nowhere. I tried asking several ways even and no one offered anything positive. As far as I got was to put a (example, A9_A) map into the map folder as an alternate map but that does'nt really work for me. the thread was immediatly and thouroughly derailed. For me, random maps would be wonderful.

So, where do you want to make them random? Everywhere?
Or you just want the posibility to make them random anywhere,
and to actually make them random for some 10 maps or somesuch?

The answer is in the topic called "1.13, request for..."
And the answer seems always random, in the sense that when you get it you don't need it anymore. Smile

I've got many more.
They just aren't finished yet, err...in the sense that I haven't even started making them. Smile
In the sense that what you call fine is still unfinished too.
And also got some, in the sense that they're not for 1.13, not yet anyway.

So I'm only making some trouble here in the forums lately.

the thread you refer to was only derailed after the correct answer to your question had been given by rowa21

altsectors.xml is the file to change in addition to putting new maps to the map folder.

Well, the options as I see it are:

1) sector randomization - each sector is chosen randomly from a list of sector maps
2) random everything - every single detail is randomized!

Option #1 would need to work properly with scripts/quests/etc., so it might be beneficial to split quest/NPC information into a separate layer. Scripts would be attached to the correct map coordinate regardless of which physical map gets chosen. NPCs would be inserted into the correct sector.

It would be fine, IMO, if either option could be done outside of the game in an editor of some type. If the physical map structure (i.e. tiles, roofs, etc.) is contained in a text file, I would experiment with writing a random generator.

Given how involved you are with all the mod projects, Starwalker, I don't know how full your PM box is, so I'll put this up here instead.

I've bashed together a new D2 SAM site using the "Queen's SAM" tileset - it's not the frakkin' nightmare that was the Wildfire 'bridge-and-island', but I'd like to think it's a little more challenging (and realistic) than the original, even if my (super-well-equipped) mercs blow through the defenders like they're not there. If you've got the time & interest, shoot me a PM and let me know where I should e-mail the .dat file.

(Sadly, it won't come with a radarmap .sti, since I don't have the foggiest clue how to create one. Unless there's a mug volunteer out there who has the skills and inclination to correct that?)

PM sent. Wink

While I'm here, though: has anyone ever had occasion to extract the map from the JA2 demo and update it into a playable sector for 1.13 - perhaps as a substitute Estoni? Even with Gabby and Dynamo constrained to 'other duties' by the current state of the quest system, it'd be a *blast* to retake that factory again - especially with the current state of gear and game-mechanics. All we'd need is the map and a little tweak to Garrisons.xml.... :devilaugh:

(Yes, I'm feeling a little nostalgic at the moment... but c'mon, folks: I'll lay good money that I am NOT the only denizen of the Bear's Pit who played that demo so many times he could clock it in his sleep - without taking so much as a scratch. :luckystrike:)

For that matter, has anyone ever considered completely overhauling the entire demo to 1.13 standards? Would our understanding with TalonSoft/SirTech etc. even permit that? Or would it be too much trouble for too little return? :compsmash:

Another query relevant to this thread: is AZAZEL still about? I've been tweaking with the .xmls to fit with his "1.13add_maps.zip", which I've recently (re-)discovered on my HDD... and for some distressing reason, the interesting-looking radarmap he created for sector A1 doesn't seem to have a corresponding .dat file. At least, not in *my* copy of the .zip file. :bawling:

Does anyone else have a copy of his A1.dat map?

People would not need third party sites to share their maps if they used what I told about above...

They just need to send me their mappacks, and I can upload them to that site.

Demoville should definitely be added to 1.13. The game is in need of a staging area to prepare/level up before the Drassen counter-attack which is *way* too brutal for being so early in the game. Plus, it's an "official" map, so it's OK. Cool
