Although... I have heard that the UB/Beta editors can be used to create the maps, (without access to more than 50 tilesets IIRC), and then the 1.13 editor can be used to add/fix items in those maps.

hey, you don't remember the years prior to you making the 1.13 map editor? of course we were designing maps during that time Very Happy the way you put it.

if you have a beta editor that works stable, it's actually a good way to work the way posted by kaiden, just keep away from the items tab so you won't be making mistakes. Of course the tilesets above 49 must be designed in the 1.13 map editor. however, there will probably only be a limited number of people using a big number of tilesets, particuliarly because the first 50 tilesets are so full of redundancy that some years of tileset work can be put inot those 50 first anyway Wink

for me, as long as i keep working on the same map (not loading new ones) the 1.13 map editor is stable and flawless as far as the features that it supports are concerned. so if you focus on one map, develop and regularly save it, there shouldn't be big troubles with the editor. at least that's how it works for me. do one map at a time. sure slows you down, but so do the freeze ctrl-alt-delete-restarts-crash-restarts Smile

I mostly do wilderness and rural farm sectors, replacing those non-quest locations in the game. I have experimented on a new Drassen airport map, and as long as the two crates are put in the same grid locations as the original ones, the Bobby Ray stuff works fine.

I also have 2-3 half completed tilesets where I put the more interesting default stuff together. Any requests on sectors to be replaced?

my request is in the wilderness basically..to make it more itneresting..tiny villages or roadside "diners" so to speak or perhaps small garrison outposts for enemy..no weapons caches..just outposts etc..small barrack and gate building with sandbags etc..you get my drift..1 or two close to each city..in reality..if a country was overrun by a dictator..you might expect to find garrison outposts guarding the cities...they might not be big and fancy..but some form of cobbled "base" would exist..just my opinion and request for stuff Very Happy

"cobbled" made me thing of why there's no cobble stones ground or floor textures. might fit well to some of my tilesets actually...

Is there a central location where i can find all of the available custom maps? I'm looking for a fresh face for my cities, and it seems most of the links in this thread are dead.

Hello John Wright. I've just discovered this thread. GREAT IDEA. I too have searched without success for the map download site. A year or so ago, for my own enjoyment, I made some new maps for Jay-BecomingX's Vietman SOG 69 UB mod. I offered these to Will Gates for his v 1.13 SOG 69 project, and will clean them up (as noted above) and send to you for your 1.13 project. I assume the e-mail address is still correct ??

However, I'm disappointed that the original GREAT IDEA concept of a JA2 map library apparently didn't get implemented, because I would sure like for SOG 69 players to have access to the complete maps if they want them. While I sincerely have the greatest admiration for everyone working on 1.13, those mods are still in the (hopefully not too distant) future. The fact remains that the only mods we currently have to play are the ones already published. New maps for these games will be appreciated too. So please, don't forget us !!

There's a NewMaps folder on the ftp-site Lalien set up:
http://ja2.h758491.serverkompetenz.net/NewMaps/

So if someone wants to fill it (I do not know who among the map guys has been given access to the ftp-site...).

I can upload maps, and I can create subfolders, if needed.

Calling all mappers!!!

Can someone do a redesign of the standard Balime Maps. Specifically to change the position of that North Wall so the AI doesn't have a spastic fit behind it and make themselves invulnerable.

I have got all maps from this thread. I was just posting to see if any mappers still existed and could fix the Balime maps rather than create whole new ones. Basically when either Balime sector is invaded from the North you cannot shoot the buggers in the head cos they sit in squares you can see only from rooftops. They play a game of get up, get down and turn around. Possibly shoot very badly at a few Militia (who in return only get about 1 in 40 shots over the wall back at them) and then pull off strange feats of Pistol headshot at 30+ tile range critical hit on mercs.

Just thought that as its a mapping issue it could be fixed quite easily with a minor redesign of that stupid north wall.

Sorry rant over. I just hate defending Balime...

I have! I have mined the entire outer section once. That was a great fireworks display on the first turn!

However is still doesn't cut the mustard. Its main problem is map edge proxitmity. If moved in or modified along those lines then it would solve the problem. Hell if I could remember how to use the map editor then I would have a go when I have the time (probably about 6 months time then...).

Anyway i also downloaded the MS Word Viewer program from the MS site to see if maybe that helps, but i cant seem to figure out how to use it, now when i try to open the map editor manual the word viewer only offers me to save it?(go figure) ive saved the file over and over 20 times now, also tried to find any tips on how to use the word viewer from the MS homepage but didnt find any.
So what am i doing wrong or how could i read the Map Editor Manual. Help please.

I don't know how to help you with this Word Viewer thingy, but if you have the time to download about 120MB, I'd recommend open office, which is free and does almost the same as its commercial counterpart from M$ and definately does read this manual (sorry for shameless advertisement)

Hello!

I have a Problem. About a year ago, I downloaded several maps of Shed23 and Azazel, and modified them in order to make them playable for 1.13. The problem is, that I only had those maps saved on my laptop, which broke, and I lost the files. So I am here to ask if someone else has modified maps for 1.13? I don't want to go manually with the map editor through all of sheds maps again to remove the items.

Thanks, mailor.

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right topic to post but I have used the search function which didn't come up with anything useful (at least not that I saw it).

I'm currently messing around with a couple of tools for JA2 1.13 and currently I'm stuck with the map editor. It loads up fine (I use SVN to keep updated) but as soon as I try to select any tileset to work with it shows this error message:

http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/580/probler8.jpg

What might be causing this?

I might add that I followed instructions of "JA 113 Editor.doc" to set up the editor and I created all the necessary shortcuts and folders (I think xD).

You don't have to use the shortcut anymore, you should have a Map Editor.exe that you can just double-click on. I'm not sure if it would cause this problem though. Try it and let me know.

Thx for the quick reply. (: Loading tilesets now works. Now I'm facing a different problem though... the editor auto-loads sector a9 and I can't seem to exit it (while when I opened it with the shortcut I was able to select which sector to edit.)

Help.

I remember, that John Wright had a homepage for dowloading some of his custom maps. I addition, there was a new (better) b_map.pcx on his page. I desperately need this b_map.pcx (and I'd like to have access to those maps as well). Since he doesn't reply to my PM, I hope someone else here can help me.

cheers, mailor

How has development of 1.13 progressed in terms of permitting som randomization of sectors when starting a new game? It would be nice if one could play the game sort of like a roguelike.

Procedurally generating each sector (not necessarily while actually running the game) is quite a bit less realistic, I would guess.

One other questio I have is, are sector data available in text format? I would like to experiment with procedural generation (I've done a bit of this for other games), but do not have the ability to work with binary files.

Randomization can be done by alternative maps.

I was just thinking... Instead of making brand new maps, why not exploit the alternative map option?

Make slightly different maps (especially city maps) with just small covered changes like different placement of enemies, of mines, equipment etc... So you don't know anything in advance.

I posed this question last week and got nowhere. I tried asking several ways even and no one offered anything positive. As far as I got was to put a (example, A9_A) map into the map folder as an alternate map but that does'nt really work for me. the thread was immediatly and thouroughly derailed. For me, random maps would be wonderful.

So, where do you want to make them random? Everywhere?
Or you just want the posibility to make them random anywhere,
and to actually make them random for some 10 maps or somesuch?

The answer is in the topic called "1.13, request for..."
And the answer seems always random, in the sense that when you get it you don't need it anymore. Smile

They just aren't finished yet, err...in the sense that I haven't even started making them. Smile
In the sense that what you call fine is still unfinished too.
And also got some, in the sense that they're not for 1.13, not yet anyway.

So I'm only making some trouble here in the forums lately.

the thread you refer to was only derailed after the correct answer to your question had been given by rowa21

altsectors.xml is the file to change in addition to putting new maps to the map folder.

Well, the options as I see it are:

1) sector randomization - each sector is chosen randomly from a list of sector maps
2) random everything - every single detail is randomized!

Option #1 would need to work properly with scripts/quests/etc., so it might be beneficial to split quest/NPC information into a separate layer. Scripts would be attached to the correct map coordinate regardless of which physical map gets chosen. NPCs would be inserted into the correct sector.

It would be fine, IMO, if either option could be done outside of the game in an editor of some type. If the physical map structure (i.e. tiles, roofs, etc.) is contained in a text file, I would experiment with writing a random generator.

For new maps, we have a directory on the same FTP-Server where NIV was during the testing phase:

It's awfully empty at the moment, so if you want your new maps uploaded there, drop me a line Wink

Okay, I'm back again. Sorry for the month wait. I had to do a move and put most of my stuff in storage or a friend's extra closet. My files were seperated from a computer. Here's the b_map.pcx at the following link. Just unzip and put it in the Data 1.13/Interface folder. I tested it on 800 x 600 resolution and it looks okay. Originally for 640 x 480. I can put 3 maps and tilesets up again or I can add more stuff first.

Get it at http://www.badongo.com/file/10599762
