Just starting up, quick question: I have some people with good MEC, but no lockpicks or kits and haven't found any. I've cleared out dressen, got the pilot, cleared the SAM site, still no lockpicks. Do I have to make them somehow, or am I just unlucky in not finding any?

Thanks!

I believe you can find both lockpicks and tool kits in or around San Mona. I usually use Bobby Ray's as tbird suggested. If you order before you start training Drassen's militia, you'll have what you need by the time you're finished training.

I'd say you're unlucky. I almost always find one after every big fight.

50-60% of the time..in one of the lockers in the airport zone theres usually a lockpick with a bit of damage..if you have anyone with str over 90..you can kick open the lockers..in drassen they tone locks down enough to use force on them when no lockpick is avail

and until you find one/order one theres always the "universal" lockpick, tnt, or even shooting at the locks with a shotgun

Well, is shooting at the locks still effective later on?
I found that after drassen shooting at most locks is just a waste of ammo...

shooting door locks is a waste of ammo. shooting crate/chest/locker locks is still a valid tactic through to the end of the game and is a good way of increasing your marksmanship too. It's also a good use of all that ammo you're not using and going to LMB-sell anyways

i was gonna mention shooting locks and alt-lmb..but i looked and realized this is the standard ja2 thread..not a 1.13 thread so some of the goodies in 1.13 dont apply here

even in vanilla it's a good way to increase marks for low end mercs and use crap caliber ammo you're going to leave behind or sell anyways, and conserve your better caliber ammo

S&W .38 Revolver and the M870 Shotgun are my favorite choices for non-eletronic locks.
