I've read that you can use a shotgun to blow open locks, but I can shoot at a locked door repeatedly and not make any progress. Is there something to this trick that I'm missing?

It doesn't work on every lock, some are simply to tough to blow open with brute force. Also it is not limited to shotguns, but works with every gun, shotguns (preferably with the white lockbuster-ammo) just work best. It also helps to have your mercs stand right in front of the door, though I managed to (accidently) shot a lock with a stray shot from half a map away ^^... If you're shooting at a locked door, there will be a message 'lock hit' for most doors and you'll need several shots until you get the final 'lock destroyed'

try using the blue striped ammo instead the default ammo (will display as golden numbers when you load it), or of course the lockbuster if that is available already.
at least that just worked on a lockbox, as for doors i too always had that problem.

maybe it doesn't work at all on metal doors?

I'm in the basement of the Tixa prison, and I'm trying to open the "jail cell" style doors. I have a key for the metal doors that I took of a guard. Nobody on my team seems able to pick or pry open those doors, and I don't have any explosives, save some TNT without a detonator. I do have a single LAW, but there's more than one door I need to get through.

Is there a key or switch I can throw to open them?

I think you need a grey "prison key" for those cell doors. Sometimes, you can find one on the ground level of Tixa, but you apparently did not. Some of the soldiers in the Tixa dungeon should be carrying the type of key you need. Kill them, and pick it up (assuming you can get to the body). You should have met Dynamo upstairs; he would be able to pick the locks if necessary.

Have you tried using a merc who is an expert lockpick? Try using Maddog or Dynamo. It always works for me.

Or, try lockbuster ammo from BR's or Tony.

Btw, lockbuster is the only ammo that has the bonus for shooting locks in the xmls. Other shotgun ammo, including buckshot, slug, or flechette, do not have any lock-opening bonus attached to them.

That TNT you have, it should explode if you throw a grenade at it.
I don't know how tough those jaildoors are...

I'd select the door on the left with bars, since halfway down that hallway there's an un-locked door, there should be an enemy with a key (and a CAWS) there.

Not the one on the right that's full-metal, it has a locked door behind it.

It turns out that the reason I couldn't find Dynamo is that I didn't go to Alma and ask the miner about him. I guess he doesn't show up until you get the quest? I wonder if I go talk to him now that I've liberated the prison if Dynamo will show up?

I am sure he always shows up whether you have been to alma or not. He can be killed in the battle, though.

Well, it took me a few tries to clear the sector, and then when I finally managed to do so, I went downstairs before getting into the jail cells on the ground level. Is he in one of the cells upstairs? Or is he in the basement somewhere and I just didn't find him?

Dynamo is in a cell on the ground level. Shank is in a cell in the basement. If he didn't show up the first time for some reason or some other bug, I wouldn't count on him showing up for your current game.
