I'm trying to get set up to play RR again since my new Vista laptop seems to be very much more forgiving of now-not-so-fatal-freezes. They still occur, but I can get out of them by insteading of turning off the entire locked-up PC (as was the case before). But on to my questions ...

1. I modified the prof.dat and renamed it correctly for my previous game. Now I want to try RR with NIV. However, by selecting NIV, the game apparently doesn't recognize the new (renamed) prof.dat file and kicks me back to the original settings, none of which remain in my RR binarydata folder. I copied my modified (renamed) prof.dat into the JA2/Data and JA2/Data-1.13 folders, with no different result. I'm playing expert, TOG, using the 2124 exe. Noteably, all my changes to prof.dat appear correctly if I select the old inventory system. Any suggestions about what I can do to correct this?

2. I'd also like to try the EDB v0.3 patch with RR. Apparently I have to select the EDB executable to make this work. Does anyone know if that exe is as stable as 2124? Does it matter if I patch the 1.13 files with EDB before or after installing RR? Will EDB work if I start the game with the 2124 exe?

Thanks for any help.

EDIT : Dont think EDB will work , but if you have time and another copy of RR to possibly ruin , why not give it a try and let us know how it turns out please .

#1 still has me baffled and I would appreciate any help with that. I didn't come across any discussion of this point in a search of the NIV thread. Any hints on that, too?

*scorp*
NIV Mode uses a file called "mercstartinggear.xml" to define character loadouts (e.g. weapons and equipment. Proedit will still work for skills and attributes, names, etc. )
To change the equip in NIV mode, you need to edit this file

#2. Sure, already set up. Disk space is cheap, but I'd prefer to know if I'm on the right track before going off on my own. Hopefully clarification will come with patience.

*scorp*

you can try using whatever exe you please, including HAM and eggs and EDB. Make sure you have the specific files and INI options needed for theses exe's to work though, plus you'll lose a lot of RR text (but only little functionality)

Hi Skorp et al,

I am a long time player of JA2, and have played through RR on my old desktop. Bought a new computer, installed everything and am currently half way through RR. I have conquered every sector North of Row I. I have garrisoned all of the cities on the I line, including the SAM site at I8. Up to this point, the game has been very stable, using the b17.exe. However, now things have gone to heck in a handbasket. Any invasion of any of the cities or the Sam site along the I row, causes the game to freeze. The only way I can keep the game going is to use the GABBI cheat and quickly move my forces into the adjacent enemy sector before they can invade my cities. Makes the time and money spent in building up the Militia useless. Any suggestions on a fix??

I have another problem. I tried starting a new RR game with the NIV2124.exe. If I select New Inventory on the opening options screen, the game will crash on the final step of the IMP Mercenary screen where you are asked if you want to pay the $3000. If I select the Old Inventory in the Options screen, there is no problem. Again, any suggestions??

Can't speak for crashes , but how many game days have you played ?
As for 2124 exe , I am using NIV with no problems at all (so far!)

Hi Lockie,

Thanks for the quick response. Regarding the crashes, I am on Day 29. Had similar problems the first time I played through RR, was hoping someone had found a fix.

Can't understand why I am crashing with NIV 2124.exe. Like I said, the crash occurs on the IMP creation final step where you authorize the $3000, if I have selected Use New Inventory in the opening options screen. Doesn't happen if I check Use Old Inventory in the opening options screen. Is there an INI setting I need to change?? Baffled at this point. Also, in general, is 2124 more stable than b17??

Hi Lockie,

Thanks again for your quick response. I agree, the 2124.exe appears to be more stable then the b17.exe, so I will start a new game using 2124. I tried the New Inventory with a different mod, but I don't care for it - makes things too complicated for my taste, so no problem for me not being able to play 2124 with the NIV (beats having to re-install).

About the NIV , I wasn't keen to start with either , but....... happy tp play around with it now , only problem in RR is a lack of LBE equipment , but as Kaerar has suggested , stealing from enemies does get you some , and also changes the dynamics of the game for me anyway ! Have fun :ok:

There are loads of loose ends in the story / quests , it's a beta which won't go any further , enjoy what you can and 2124 does seem pretty stable here ( day 92 so far and very few ctd / freezes .)

Further work on RR has been postponed, because 1.13 is not developed far enough (read: not moddable enough) at this time.
Some important things have still not been externalized in 1.13, so Scorpion might be waiting, if he has not given up already... Sad

i sure do enjoy it, especially the beginning part, killing everybody in Vladikavkaz russian garrison :axe: (among other things everybody in my team panics and starts to say things they usually dont - Scope recalling childbirth etc ) still its kinda strange (and was not so with some older version) when you use train and its called jeep on map screen. reminds an old saying: when in zoo you see on giraffe's cage sign "rhinoceros" you should not believe your eyes

I used 2085 , but had crashes later on in game ,I think day 30 or thereabouts , but when using 2124 , virtually crash free ( at least up to day 92 ! ).

If the starting-options screen (where you set difficulty and SciFi/Regular) does not have an option for New Inventory or Old Inventory in the lower right corner, then the exe you are using does not support NIV.

That one does support NIV, so I am at a loss why you don't have the option to choose it.

Convert is - by the legend - Irina's long-lost brother. he is in Pankisi (F5) with old sheik Ahmad. in older version, if you talked with Irina to Ahmad, he said something on the lines of - you look alike one of ours, are you from the northern part of the country... and after that, if you talked to Convert with Irina, you could hire him. good soldier, and free. now this things seems not to work - for me, at least. instead there is that "marry Darryl?" question and a chance to lose Irina.

the other thing is more tricky: get Einar from prison to old Doc (G8?), then, if you let 'em go, you could hire Butch (in the same sector) and if you chose to shoot them, you could pick up icebox with donor organs, got that to Mike in prison cellar and hire him. no one of the whole bunch will talk to me any more, just "leave me alone" or something like that. huh, that should be none of their business that i started with killing every russian in Vladikavkaz... so thats why i'm curious.
