When I just played vanilla JA2, I got to the point where I like just using
IMP "Monk"
Dr. Q
Wolf
which was fun for a long time - I like the personalities and quotes from those two quite a bit, and with good leadership with my IMP, good medical with Dr. Q, and good mechanical/explosive with Wolf, and Night Ops with all. Mainly I just filled in the rest with freebies and cheap "in country" hires. Sometimes I'd pick up Numb from MERC - he and Dr. Q were like ninjas, although his accent is atrocious lol
I always get Gasket.
Now that I'm playing 1.13 and things aren't nearly as easy, I'm trying the "all animal-name" team -
IMP "Mongoose"
Wolf
Fox
Grizzly
Bull
and Cougar when I can afford him.
The personality interactions are great - I love Grizzly's eulogies - and in particular I found that I really like Bull's quotes -
"Lie still" (when he kills someone)
"Hard work and clean livin' pay off"(skill increase)
"You pay more to get more, and I'm more now" (salary raise)
and of course my signature line.

A-team:
IMP 1 (Night/stealth)
IMP 2 (Night/stealth) (or Barry)
IMP 3 (Night/Auto) (or Buns)
Grunty
Igor
Dimitri (replaced by robot)
B-Team:
Ira (traveling militia/doc)
MD (traveling militia/doc)
Maddog (San Mona to repair and buy weapons)
Gasket (Drassen crate opener/repair/Carmen POC)
Shank & Dynamo (flying around moving guns/ammo from place to place)
I usually forget to pick up Carlos & Miguel, and snipe Conrad in the head rather than deal with his attitude & high paycheck.

My core team from the start includes:
Fraz (IMP dude) - Night Ops, Stelthy.
Nails - Lockpick, Dark Humor.
Fox - Field Medic, Raises fast, keeps the moral high.
Hamous - Stealty, Low stats, but I like his humble personality
Latter on the game these ones are a must: Shadow, Lynx, Grizzly, Ivan, Igor, Trevor, Raven (Raider stays at home).

i guess the only non-RPC character that actually remains in my team until the endgame these days is often Ivan. Just the most profilic Merc imo.

Do any of the editors allow you to change your IMPs personality once the game has started?
I Have 2 different games going on, in one of them I have 3 IMPs:
1) Psycho Loner
2) Cowardly and scared of insects
3) Forgetful Coward
I would like to alter number 3, rather than replace him with a new IMP.

I don't have a "fixed" preferred core ; especially since i recently discovered all the new mercs. The game just offers too many options to limit oneself
Technicians
*** dropped: Larry amd Nails ; while not bad mercs, i lack the freetime to babysit them through their drug-problem
* Starters
- Barry: good overall stats, quick learner, can do it all ; from repairing over picking locks and disarming traps (normal+electronical for bombs+traps) to fighting
- Juan: low-end merc, this also means low-end pay ; can be a good supporter if trained ; or limit his training to strength and make him a cheap pack mule ; lack of Demolitions trait is somewhat limiting
- Rusty: similar to Barry, just that Rusty learns slower, however is lvl 5
- Steroid: his lack of Demolitions trait limits his utility somewhat ; requires some extensive training in Agility+Dexterity if you want him to be a fighter ; reward is a godless (or rather: brainless) synchro
* once the money is flowing
- Wally (Walter Yuntz): Juan 1.5 so-to-say, just don't expect miracles from his shooting
- Boss: no Demolitions trait, but good overall stats
- Brain: no Demolitions trait, but Heavy Weapons and good overall stats ; his callsign should be "Tank" ;)
- Nails: low Agility and is a drug user, but quite good overall
- Spam: good overall stats with Technician Paramedic and Stealthy ; his utility is only limited by his equipment and your imagination
- Larry: similar to Spam in almost all aspects ; just that Larry loves LSD
- Magic: Spam 1.5 so-to-say ; quite expensive
- Trevor: Barry Mk.2
* not a tech-wiz
- Vicky: Gunslinger Ambidex and Demolitions make her a good allrounder ; high MEC skill, but the lack of any Technician trait limits her utility a bit
Medics
*** dropped: Larry ; while not a bad merc, i lack the freetime to babysit him through his drug-problem
* Starters
- Dr Q: Night Ops and melee expert
- Fox: good Agility score, sky high Dexterity and Ambidex is intriguing ; offers Teaching trait
- Ira: Scouting, a mildly effective background, Sociable, reasonably fast learner and Teaching ; all i could expect from the team's dedicated Spotter
- MD: above average stats, quick learner ; also offers Teaching trait
- Spider: Night Ops and Stealth is intriguing ; requires Agility training
- Wahan: very cheap ; raise his strength and you have a pack mule
* once the money is flowing
- Danny: Fox 1.5 so-to-say ; rather a rarity in my line-ups
- Laura: Auto Weapons, Stealthy, good overall stats and quick learner ; only Agility is a bit low
- Spam: good overall stats with Technician Paramedic and Stealthy ; his utility is only limited by his equipment and your imagination
- Larry: similar to Spam in almost all aspects ; just that Larry loves LSD
----- any merc with Doctor (2x Paramedic) trait ; they don't offer a weapon/stealth/night traits, thus it comes down to personal mood, respectively if the A-Team or B-Team need 2x doctoring traits on a single merc
Utility mercs
*** dropped: Haywire and Razor ; while excellent for laughs and giggles, i lack the freetime to babysit them through their drug-problem
* Starters
- Bull: pack mule, boxer, dialogue and Prison Guard (since i'm currently trying out the Prison feature... ;) )
- Grizzly: pack mule and boxer ; his Heavy Weapons trait keeps/makes him even more useful throughout the campaign
- Grunty: Night Ps, reasonably fast learner, Heavy Weapons
- Haywire: Auto Weapons, requires extensive Agility and some Dexterity training ; buddy of Razor ; cheap and they make for some good laughing ; is a drug-user
- Hector: meele expert and good alrounder
- Igor: excellent allrounder
- Meltdown: Gunslinger Ambidex Heavy Weapons "lovely" nature and good overall stats
- Razor: melee expert ; buddy of Haywire ; cheap and they make for some good laughing ; is a drug-user
- Wink: an (almost) good Agility score, Throwing Demolitions and Athletics make him intriguing enough ; his Dexterity and Marksmanship are a bit low though
* once the money is flowing
- Raven: Auto Weapons and Markswoman (and Night ops) make her a good pick as the main shooter of B-Team ; Police background if you're into taking Prison(er)s ; good overall stats ; buddy of Raider
- Raider: Squadleader (2x trait ; also Teaching trait) make him an excellent pick for B-Team ; Police background if you're into taking Prison(er)s ; good overall stats ; buddy of Raven
- Gus: Heavy Weapons expert and Deputy ; excellent stats (being the Mortar-Man, i don't care about his Agility) ; quite expensive
- Henning: Auto Weapons Heavy Weapons Teaching and good overall stats
- Ivan: Auto Weapons Heavy Weapons Body Building and good overall stats ; highly sympathetic
- Kelly: Heavy Weapons Marksman Body Building and good overall stats
- Lynx: Marksman Scouting Night Ops and good overall stats
- Rudolf: Marksman Night Ops Teaching ; buddy of Laura (she's also his buddy) ; a bit low on Agility and Strength
- Scope: Marksman Night Ops Teaching and good overall stats ; buddy of Sidney
- Sidney: Gunslinger Throwing Demolitions; buddy of Scope ; a bit low on Agility
- Shadow: excellent allrounder
- Spike: Marksman Scouting Deputy ; a bit low on Agility
* Machine Gunners
- Len: Auto Weapons Teaching Deputy, good overall stats, lvl 7, remarkably cheap package ; also highly sympathetic with his no-nonsense attitude
- Monk: excellent allrounder
- Ice: 1 of only 2 Auto Weapons experts you may hire in the entire game ; also has Teaching trait ; good overall stats and remarkably cheap package ; buddy of Magic (Magic is also his buddy)
- Conrad: the other approved "Machine Gunner", also has Teaching trait ; low Agility ; i personally find him highly un-sympathetic
The lists ignore Dynamic Opinions (*) and Friend/Foe relations ; also, they are surely incomplete, still they offer a larger overview of options.
(*) topic about Dynamic Opinions: http://thepit.ja-galaxy-forum.com/index.php?t=msg&th=21961&start=0&
IMPs
Whatever suits my fancy, but i usually go for "efficient" mercs when it comes to weapon traits (i.e., i rather pick 2x the trait, instead of splitting among 2 different weapon categories, and then pick a fitting secondary trait) ; also, i tend to avoid night combat (past the early game, that is ; thus i at most pick Stealthy which has some more utility), as well as melee and knife-throwing. Finally, i'm rather happy with the available Paramedics and Doctors, so that i practically never create an IMP Doctor ; Paramedic however shows up sometimes.
So... in the beginning, my team might be
- 1 "Starter" Technician ; sometimes an IMP has 1 or 2 levels of Technician as well
- 1 or 2 "Starter" Medics
- Bull/Grizzly for muling and some early boxing fights ; this merc may or may not disappear later
- 1 or more IMPs
- whoever else i might be able to finance from the "Starter" lists
Later i build an A-Team which does the main assault work ; and a B-Team that hunts down patrols / road blocks, supports the A-Team (either by joining the assault, or by taking out one of the Counter Attack troops) and sometimes garrisons sectors to repair stuff and train Militia.
The composition of these teams varies wildly, example: i train Barry = yes then he stays with the A-Team and a Technician/Engineer from the "once the money is flowing" list gets hired for the B-Team, if there is no IMP to do the job ; or instead of a "Doctor" respectively a high-cost Paramedic from the "once the money is flowing" list, i hire another starting Medic ; or i decide against Assault Rifles and MGs and instead build a mostly Sniper team ; or i make an "All IMPs" respectively a small "Super IMPs" team ; or a mix of any.
(i.e. in my current game i started with 3 hired mercs from the "Starter" lists, Ira and 5 IMPs ; the 5 IMPs each being "expert" in their weapon of choice and having 3 additional traits, either picking Medic/Technician to reduce the number of "necessary" mercs later on, and/or picking utility traits that i rarely use, respectively rarely use past the early game)
The options are many

malicious/psycho sniper/scout competitive_shooter and malicious/any_penalty spy/athletics
have proven worth to spend >50% of the 15k starting money (a big chunk for 9x19 match&aet ammo)
The remaining ~7k leaves no big selection,
but I think Hector Alvarez deserves it to be added to the given recommendations.

Well I did not specifically reply to your @Mai message,
read the thread only superficially and noticed that nobody had mentioned Hector.
I would even consider him on par as allrounder with Igor due to some higher values
which Igors higher wis value may let him catch up during a campaign of (in my terms) standard duration.
Igor is definitely the better shot and i think his traits are stronger if they count,
while Hector's athletics is nearly always useful, unless the player likes camping.
Besides, somewhat late I also noticed that Lt "Stogie" Horges did not get even a single recommendation in this thread,
which I now hereby grant!
He clearly "beats" Gus in every aspect if you spend the difference of their salaries on some aides for Stogie, easily verifyable in pvp session;)
Add to that one of the imo best speechsets in the game, and the cigar!
Btw some "will not hire unless planning to let them die" mercs:
Lynx: finds pleasure in killing endangered species (send on solo mission to bloodcat lair w/o or wrong ammo ;)
Dynamo: exteme racist, i will still open his cell like all the ohters in Tixa,
but in last campaigns did not even hire_him_to_instantly_dismiss_after_speaking_with_Matt
Raider: annoyance lvl of speechset beats Ira
All WF mercs whose original salary to attrib_value&skill ratio indicates despicable attempt to sponsor authors own creations,
neither foregotten or forgiven up to this day [insert long rant on out of game stuff regarding author, business etc])
along with the widely acknowledged fact that they have terrible speechsets.
Fox&Steroid: annoyance of speechsets went far beyond tolerability level many many years ago.
Bubba&Conrad: not worth the bullets required to kill 'em!
Last not least Carmen: the 6 files are fake, created by the agency that Carmen works for, thats his death sentence.
The fact that his gun is far beyond what min item progress would otherwise give me has ofc nothing to do with that ;)

All good ; the idea was, with such a long list, i could easily add Hector since he's a low cost high quality merc, of interest for others
townltu wrote on Thu, 22 November 2018 13:46Besides, somewhat late I also noticed that Lt "Stogie" Horges did not get even a single recommendation in this thread
He is sympathetic indeed The reason he wasn't mentioned is probably, that MERC_WEBSITE_ALL_MERCS_AVAILABLE is false by default and Stogie is pretty far down the unlocking chain. This is issue is further enhanced by the quality disparity between AIM and MERC.
townltu wrote on Thu, 22 November 2018 13:46Btw some "will not hire unless planning to let them die" mercs:
Evil
Thanks for the note about Carmen ; i never tried searching him for contraband, although i could have guessed that a guy with a female name is highly suspicious

In vanilla, back in '99, once i figured how to survive and thrive, my core team would start with Shadow, a female Night Ops IMP and Steroid for repairs.
Nowadays i am trying new things with 1.13 and all and it's great ! I like Gaston, Spooky and Stogie from MERC, Cougar also, good shot and scouting. Scouts are very useful, i try to have one in every squad. And some IMP's, mainly a Doctor, a Sniper and an Engineer. Later on i get some from AIM and some locals, somewhat disappointed on the local mercs, i prefer to work with the ones i am familiar with.
@Townltu
I love Conrad, he's funny, great shot and good trainer, Raider too for the same reasons. During vanilla games, he was great at shooting enemies in the dark, as long as he was equipped with a laser sight and the pointman was seeing an enemy. Lynx is a great shot but the WF mercs are talking with a low voice, especially Grace Girelli, Laura rocks though. Her freakin' boyfriend, Rudolf, stopped using him due to his constant swearing. Bubba, used him in vanilla some but in the end i left him out of the team. I wholeheartedly agree about Dynamo, recruit him, have him talk to Greg and dismiss. He's a psycho and all he's good at is repairing stuff.I have others to do that and they're better too. Steroid....as i've said, recruit him at start for his toolkit, as soon as i can afford someone better, off he goes. Fox though is awesome, 100 dexterity, good shot, medic and despite her 71 Wisdom, she improves fast. As Barry would say : " Fox is dependable. I am veeeery satisfied with Fox ". No Wolf though, generally i don't like mercs with big frame, i feel that they present a big target. Still, i can always use Gus and Stogie.
.
PS. Concerning Raider, his voice has always bothered me and wondered how did Raven got with him, Hitman is wondering the same, lol. Anyways, i can overlook his voice since he's good at training and shooting.
