So reading through some stuff has made me try to take a closer look at the psycho trait, specifically just when its bonus applies. I've read people saying it's always on, it activates when you attack an enemy twice, only with bursts, only when the merc cackles during the random burst fire, etc. I'd like to get a definitive answer on this.

You got a bonus to chance to hit, beside other behaviour.

nope

EDIT: if it is for a merc already generated, you need to restart, the status of the merc is in saved game.

Psycho just means that you get a slight bonus to hit when you repeatedly attack the same enemy (twice or more). They have a much higher chance of "going psycho" the less ap you use to aim at the target too.

Psycho mercs have 15% extra chance to hit, but if they have a burst-capable weapon, they may tend to fire out bursts just when you less expect it and for no apparent reason.

It can be quite painful if you're low on ammo or if there's civilians near the enemy, but you can avoid it giving your psycho mercs weapons with no burst option.

It's only 10% extra chance per hit on repeatedly attacks, just tested it 1min ago.

When a psycho merc uses single shot fire, he will only switch to burst mode when he goes psycho, even when his gun is autofire capable.
Psycho mercs will never switch to autofire when going psycho.
But if a psycho merc uses autofire (i.e. you assign him to shoot 4 rounds in autofire) he can go psycho and empty the clip or will fire as long as he has AP to shoot.

So if you don't want you psycho mercs to go psycho, give them weapons with only single and autofire and use single shots only.
