Having never heard of this before, I was quite surprised to find that when I took the Alma gun range (H13) *without* being detected by the enemy, Sergeant gave me a Rocket Rifle! As soon as the enemy detects you, they set off some explosives in one of the western rooms, destroying the Rocket Rifle and some other goodies.

Has anybody experienced this yet?

If the enemy in that sector get to the red button in the control room (where the General is), they'll set the alarm off and blow up the locker holding the rocket rifle. If you prevent the enemy from getting to the alarm, you can get the rocket rifle, whether you talk to the Sargent or not. If fact, if you plant a merc in front of the button, you can shoot any enemy who tries to get there, and they usually won't shoot back, they'll just try to run in and push the button.

To get the rocket rifle from the Sargent, you must use a merc with high enough leadership, otherwise, he'll just thank you and leave. However, if you clear the sector, it doesn't matter. Just have a merc with good lockpicking open the locker and take the rocket rifle for yourself. You won't find much ammo with it though.

But the rocket rifle sucks anyways, and who wants to play with that piece of crap?

Yup, happened to me a few times. But at difficulties higher than novice, I find it almost impossible to get there without being noticed... the explosives are detonated by a switch in the room where the general is, so there's still the possibility to get into that room as fast as possible and stop everybody from reaching the red button (shots to the legs or stun grenades come to mind)

I don't find it worth the effort though, as the rocket rifle is not that good... only slightly better values than most assault rifles, can't take any useful attachments, uses very rare ammunition and is generally one of the least versatile weapons.

It is quite easy actually, silently remove any "obstacle" on your way to the door.

Either secure the button as described above.

or

Talk to the sergeant.

This shouldn't cause much problem even on the higher difficulties as the enemy concentration around these two rooms are usually pretty light.

An easy way to infiltrate is to head in from the north, cut the fence, walk along the west exterior of the building, then go in through the front door. That way, you avoid roof sentries and the guards at the front gate. Once inside, equip a silenced weapon or throwing knives, and you can get to the Sargeant or red button easy.

The "nuttier" here did it a similar way,but went from the west, offed the guys on the roof and some at the ground.Entered the building, offed some more until reaching both Sargeant & red button and did a little shooting practice with "red button sickos"(This time not silent way,but Maddog's way) :biglaugh: . They are pathetic like their fellas from JA2:DL mines.

I think something is wrong with my game. I've been wondering why I couldn't do it. The problem is even when I use a knife or silent weapon, as soon as a enemy dies, the alarm goes off.

Many people complain about problems when trying to obtain this rocket rifle. Many people think that he problems are somehow connected to v1.13 (btw, are you playing v1.13 or vanilla)?

When you're playing v1.13 you can find out out if everything is right by cheating (only for testing): When entereing the sector enable the cheat-mode and reveal the enemies with alt+e then you can attack the sector as usually (silently) and see exactly when the enemy rushes for the red button in the control room (this button sets of an alarm and a bomb that blows up the rifle).

If you're playing plain "vanilla" JA2 than I would say that there's nothing wrong with your game and that it might be the case that, although you're dispatching your emeny silently there is *another* enemy who sees you and informs his buddies via walkie talkie.

Hopefully this is helpful.

General rule:
If you kill an enemy 'silently' and the game doesn't automatically return to real time afterwards, it was not silent.

Well, I've tried killing with both the knife and a silent weapon. The enemy never gets a turn. It does automatically return to real time. However, then the wall explodes. I am playing 1.13. It seems that whenever I attack, the enemy automatically runs for the button even if there is no other enemy around.

I managed to get into the pool table room, but there is a enemy who stands outside the room with the button. I can't get into the room without setting off the alarm. If I kill him silently, the wall explodes. It seems impossible to get in before he notices me.

Now that sounds pretty buggy to me. I guess the priority of using 'self destruct' buttons is set to high, but as no one here seems to really understands the AI, I can't help you with this.

It happened last game as well. I'm not sure if it always happens in 1.13 or if there is another reason.

Well, if it really annoys you than do the following:
Open the map editor, load the map (H13 IIRC) and change the button's "tolerance" so that the enemies won't use it after the first kill.

Seems to be fixed when using Wildfire maps (maps only, not the full mod). After I'm discovered, there are usually a few turns to the explosion: if I rush in quickly, I can stop it. Sneaking close and killing a few guards silently is required, as it's close to impossible to rush in from the edge of the map in time.

I think the alarm will be set off when a certain percentage of the enemies has been killed, silently or not.
At least that's what I *think* the source tried to tell me.

Don't pin me on this one though... might just be after you're detected that this happens.

Well, with the wildfire maps, it's another issue entirely. With a *good* team, you can try the following order of conquest:
First the prison sector, it has a panic trigger, but you can safely ignore the released gas (could be an issue if you have POWs there, never tried).
There's an underground passage between the prison and the base (well, it's a teleport, there is only an actual basement in retail WF)
A good team can appear right in the middle of their atrium, take the guards by surprise and secure the 'button room' just east of the elevators.
After taking the base from the inside, you can move on eastwards to the ware houses. Your entry point will be directly west of the 'button house', again attacking from inside the fenced compound.
You can then proceed to the mine sector. Although it doesn't really matter for that order, you could take it at any time you want.
