I'm playing an all-female game, with a particular challenge for my IMP - I cannot use guns, grenades or explosives of any kind; this is in Vanilla JA2, not 1.13, so this limits my choices to fists, crowbars and knives of various kinds. Obviously, this forces me to be clever most of the time...but at least I have more conventionally-armed mercenaries covering my back most of the time.

I had my five-women Squad 2 attack Tixa, figuring that even if I can't recruit the prisoners I at least owe the country's citizens to release them from the Warden's cruelty. Thing is, there's not really any cover leading up to the prison and I guess I was having an off day, because my poor troops got pushed back by the prison's resistance, partially because I had foolishly allowed their ammunition to run low and had neglected maintenance on their weapons and armour. Squad 2 has to pull out.

Rankled, I reload and see who else I have about while Squad 2 goes to restock. I see that my IMP is wandering out alone, probably restocking on lost throwing knives from the SAM site or something. I think "well, I certainly can't take out everyone with one knife-wielding maniac, but I bet I can thin out some of the outer guards." So my level 7 knife/throwing expert with NVGs wanders into Tixa.

A couple of real-time hours later, all enemies are dead and my lone IMP is the only weapon-toting person left in the facility. Not a bullet fired on either sound - tear gas not even deployed. And not even a scratch on my own IMP! This mission pushed my abilities to their limit and I think I've learned a few new tricks for knifeplay. For instance, the AP requirements for knifing increase when you take an energy boost. Enemies always close the door behind them when they move unless interrupted midway, even if investigating noise - and if you position yourself to be behind the door when it opens, they won't see you and interrupt their movement.

I guess you've been praying to St. Quicksavius all the time... Very Happy
It's stll cool, though... I never managed to take out much more than the starting garrison in Omerta and the patrol right before Drassen (in experienced) with only knives...

I always had a real hard time with kniving in JA2. So I appreciate your trick with the door. I'll have to try it sometime.

I pray to him every time I play TBS games....... :biglaugh:

If I understood your tactic correctly,I think I do it sometimes.Especially at I13(Alma).

Well, unfortunately from playing it many times, I know there's one guy just behind that entrance door.So I open the left door, leaving him behind it,open the other door to the right with another merc and close the left door.I always get an interrupt doing this.

Then practice a little knifing. :axe:

One time I killed all redshirts without bullets. But it was on a non-city sector at night with a few enemies and Shank's marvellous th-knives...... :luckystrike:

Most impressive Snicker. Nothing like achieving that almost impossible goal you've set yourself!

I am very impressed with your use of knives. Most of the time I can't even get close enough to use them.

Tell me have you ever killed a crepitus or blood cat with a blade? I would be very impressed with that.

Numb killed a crepitus with a ninja kick last week in my game. Of course, it was a critical one.

I asked because I saw a militia member clash at a crepitus with a machete...than another blasted with a shotgun.

I never managed to hit a crepitus with a machette or a knife. I try sometimes in the caves, but I usually send my worst mercs (with a decent one escorting them) against the bugs. Biff and Shank always missed. No other merc ever tried.

A while back (a couple of years ago) I ran into some sort of bug where certain firearms were considered poor quality by the mercs. Even though the weapons had good stats the mercs would haul out a knife and run up to enemies to engage in HtH. That happened a few times with bloodcats and sometimes with good results but usually it ended up pretty badly.

In my current game, I took the I13 Alma sector without shooting at all in Insane mode. Well, ok, I had cleared the rest of the town before to avoid finding myself in the middle of reinforcements squads from the adjacent sectors... anyway, there were around 25 grey shirts to kill, and I couldn't have done it without quicksaving like a madman.

I discovered at the same time that mercs get really stealthy from level 7 and on. The stealthy skill becomes almost useless at high levels (good for me, because I have no stealthy guy in my whole team...)
