I think so... their new website isn't very informative. Their old forum is full of fans just as pissed as we are when it comes to JA3.

Anyway, the best thing about The Fall(out) is that its one of the few RPG/RTS to go deliver fully open modding enviroment. It would be a shame if we didn't use it as a base for a "community JA3". Or at least consider it as a choice.

The only big problem I see with this is the fact that's hard to get a copy.

After all this praise for this game, I think I'll give it a try. Heck, I don't mind if JA3 would look like this as long as it had all the core gameplay elements that made JA2 game that still lives on today.

Just need to find a way to get it ...

The Fall has some features over JA2 of course and some lacking, due to its mostly RPG orientation. But the code it's wide open, there's a manual on what does what, the map editor is an easy to use, solid tool, everything (almost) is stored in cheap and easy to alter formats... Can you ask for more?

A fair word of warning...

The original, 1.0 release of "The Fall" is StarForce copy protected, which was merely deactivated in the patched 1.10 re-release. Unfortunately, 'deactivated' equates to dormant code components still residing on your system, with unpredictable results.

StarForce trashed my system hardware. I've learned my lesson.

1.0 indeed, but that's hardly available. All you can find nowdays is Reloaded, which is 1.10. I upgraded from 1.5 to 1.10 and checking the system as instructed on your website I found no trace of StarForce.

My primary intention was to warn people of installing the original 1.0 release, as there are still a few copies floating around on eBay, bargain bins and flea markets in Europe.

Most likely, the StarForce Removal Tool was patched into the 1.10 version. A few publishers were forced to deactivate SF after discovering that it was initially incompatible with Windows Vista, and incorporated the tool into subsequent patches (i.e. Codename: Panzers I & II).

The Anti-StarForce Forum is unfortunately down now, but it contained numerous reports by programmers who dissected SF and the removal tool (developed and distributed courtesy of StarForce, btw). The contention was a general mistrust towards post-install removal vs. complete omission, notably the inherent danger posed by dormant components still residing on the system. This 'install, then deactivate' process is possibly also employed in the patched 1.10 version of "The Fall".

EDIT: my apologies for side-tracking the modding discussion. As a redeeming factor, I'll mention that I bought this game when it was originally released many years ago. I enjoyed playing it at first, but stopped after running into a wall of bugs. Hopefully these issues were remedied in the latest patch. It's rumoured that the authors actually contacted someone from the original Fallout dev team for ideas and programmed a few FO references into the game as well.

"The Fall - Last Days of Gaia Extended Version" - is it this one I have to buy to play bug-free? Did anyone already play through the whole game, and was it fun?

Extended, Reloaded whatever they call it. Should be patched to latest 1.10...

Looking at the walkthrough, I am not far from finishing the game now. Was fun, but a lot shorter than JA2. I haven't counted the locations, but I think there are less than in JA2 too. Maybe this was the problem. Too short and not enough randomness to add replayability. It's not a game critical problem, though. It's the storyline's fault. It pushes you too fast towards the end. The sidequests are rarely in another sector and when they are, they are pretty short.

These guys had everything they needed to make the game just like JA2, but missed the starting gun. For example, you have random attacks, especially when you sleep and you don't leave a merc as guard. But their setup is weak (a bunch of desperate enemies rush into your heavy machine gun fire to be slaughtered) and it needs to be tweaked. I read somewhere you can get attacked while travelling too, but haven't experienced that yet...

The game has the posibility to make bazillion side quests only from combinations of items. They passed on the opportunity. Overall it's a mix of great ideas and fun and a feeling of "damn it, it could've been so much more"...

Nope. According to this reference "The Fall: Last Days of Gaia - Extended Version" is v1.08. The latest v1.10 release is called "The Fall: Last Days of Gaia - Reloaded." You could manually patch the "Extended" version to "Reloaded", but risk infecting your system with StarForce in the process.

Its nasty copy protection that actually acts like malware being both stealthy and taking lots of your resources thus slowing almost everything down. However, I do believe that even if you get 1.08 version of this game you can avoid getting Starforce installed. I think it actually gets installed the first time you run the game so you need to install game, patch to 1.09 and 1.10 BEFORE you start game or even setup and only after you patched start game. It worked for some other games that have removed Starforce protection in later patches. It may work here.

Every time i start my system my computer complains about starforce being incompatable, i tell it to continue ignoring the problem and everything is fine. As for this game it looks intreging but I'm over here in seattle so I am proably never seeing a copy.

StarForce is a pc copy protection scheme which can permanently damage or seriously cripple your hardware.

Good summaries of the StarForce issue (along with a removal tool) are available at Boycott Starforce Blog and Wikipedia. The Daemon Tools Game dB is also handy for determining whether a particular title is StarForced.

Uriens is right. StarForce is activated the first time you run the game. Be very careful not to start "The Fall" (or any of its components) before applying the v1.10 patch which deactivates the copy protection.

English patch only changes text, if you hear german speech it's normal. You need to disable speech if you don't want to hear german and use text only.

You unzip the "English Mod" from NMA and drop those two folders that are within the archive directly into root directory (you don't copy /English Mod... btw.. you copy the two /scripts and /globaltext subfolders).

Don't confuse patches and the English Mod. Pathches are executables, the mod should be a zip file. And the best source for the English Mod would be No Mutants Allowed forum.

You should see me chase two damn deer with hunger in my eyes... I had only some crappy pew-pews handguns and i gave up after 10km of running. Later on I took my revenge and I trained my naturalist to "calm" them, so I could get close and get me some free chow...

Oh, and weapon familiarization is a must for JA2. There's just no bad aspect to it!

Can you please confirm?

My copy is a fully patched version and about familiarization.

Once I change the weapon used, it seems that the Pchar, simply resets and looses any fam value he/she gained so far.

Or am I missing something???

Thanks for any future help!

Weapon familiarisation is found in character sheet. You'll see the weapons each merc has used and how familiar she/he has become with it. Didn't notice any reset though (didn't properly test either).

What do you mean by "once I change the weapon"? Like switch to secondary, then switch back to old weapon?

@lockie - it took me about 3-4 days playing only about 2-3 hours to get close to finish. So total playtime is about 12h... pretty short I'd say. Not as JA2UB short... but not as long as JA2 either.

Yes, I had my main char getting slightly better, then I tried him with a dragunov, and the p90 fam rating went back to the starting value.

Made me pretty mad:)

Might be a simple explanation regarding weapon familiarity. It has two components. Weapon Types and Specific Weapon.

My char, for example, is currently equipped with laser gun, but his listing looks like this:

Familiar with the following weapon types:
M249 SAW - Unfamiliar
Laser Gun - Very Unfamiliar
(...)

Familiar with the following weapon:
M249 SAW (Fatass Bertha) - Familiar
(...)

So I didn't lose my familiarity with the SAW, even if I cleared the whole map with a Laser Gun. But you should notice there are two types and probably they act differently. You might've given back your character a different Dragunov... or something like that. Or looked in different places each time...

As a rule Weapon Class familiarity grows much slower than Specific Weapon. And makes sense. Each soldier cares for his own weapon first.

Give your Dragunov a name and that way you'll be sure sure you don't "steal" it from its rightfull owner.
