So I finally found him... now how do you recruit him? He won't even listen to Miguel. Tried everything, but he just keeps saying "Good talking to you".

in vanilla JA2 you had to hurt him - so he says something like: i see you know who i am, lets make a deal. in mods its usually enough to show him the disk with data about terrorists.

Ohhh, thanks Burzmali I'll try showing him the disk. I did try to hurt him, and I also tried to threaten him, but no dice.

Have you also searched for the "Slay Forever" thread?

There are a few settings that may need to be changed in the ini too.

Even knowing all of this I still had difficulties getting him in the last game I played to the extent that I gave up on it cause I was sure something couldn't have been set right. I've successfully hired him once and did get the "allright you know who I am" speach but I couldn't for the life of me trigger it last time either.

I really wish someone would post up a walkthrough of exactly every step you need to go through from setting up you ini choices even before you start a new game, right through to what speach choices you need to choose when talking to him.

Badbru,

Yes, I did read that thread, and I set the SLAY_FOREVER option to true in my .ini. I still don't know if showing him the disk will work, since the merc that has it is all the way in Chitzena. I might have messed up already by starting to talk to him with the wrong merc, which might have something to do with him not wanting to join, I think.

I agree, some kind of help / walkthrough on what procoess to follow to successfully hire him would be very useful! Anyone that managed to hire him remember the steps?

strange enough, but i'd think it's not so important that it's merc with very high leadership who shoots Sly into leg or gives him the disk. could be i just do not remember...

I suspect like Devin there is a pattern required: friendly direct recruit (he refuse) followed by threaten friendly recruit (he accept). Just give him the disk and he offers one week without any hassle.

Hello JA2-community,

optional setting before starting a new game:
 \Data-1.13 Ja2_Options.INI
*****************************
ENABLE_ALL_TERRORISTS = TRUE
SLAY_FOREVER = TRUE
*****************************

@ DennisBergkamp: Maybe you forgot to talk with Carmen? At first you have to start the "terrorist-quest" not till then you can recruit Slay with the described methods.

* Without the Russian patch:
1. threaten him (so he stands up from his wheelchair)
2. then you have to hurt him (a simple punch is effectual; a headshot is not necessary Wink )
3. vet him with you first-aid or medical kit
4. you can recruit him (the leadership of your mercenary is not important)

* With the Russian patch:
1. threaten him (so he stands up from his wheelchair)
2. give him the disk from Carmen
3. you can recruit him (the leadership of your mercenary is not important)

Wow, well there's our walkthrough! Thanks so much Scheinworld!!

I think I might have installed the russian patch then, because threatening (he jumps out of his wheel chair) + hurting him + patching him up didn't work. I did talk to Carmen, and he gave me the disk.

Problem is, the merc that has the disk got stuck defending Chitzena, now he's somewhere halfway dragging his ass back to Alma (where Slay is). So I haven't had the chance to test and see if he joins when I show it to him.
I'll let you guys know if it worked (or didn't)!

Wenn i test something is take a quick save & backup slot and just run with that merc, all other things just ignore, wenn attacked just run or auto and let them killed Very Happy
Like finding Hamous(need that truck) or Skyrider, just visite all sectors and reload again.

Heh, I did just that. And it works! Woohoo! Half my squad died in the process getting there, but at least I know I'm able to hire him now Smile

The SLAY_FOREVER feature seems to work also, I'm able to extend his contract 2 weeks for $38k !!!

How are the terrorists supposed to work, anyway? They only seemed to show up in major battles in my current game and they mostly got killed by the militia. I'm sure I picked off at least 3 of them plus the crowd of guys in San Mona by Tony and then I taught Kingpin a lesson in mortar and grenade launcher usage.

Don't they just randomly show up in towns (most of them in disguise)? Except for the Druggist, I think, he can always be found in Grumm. There's an ENABLE_ALL_TERRORISTS = TRUE variable in the .ini, so I guess if set to FALSE, not all of them will even show up in a game.

I've never seen militia attacking them, unless attacked/threatened, they're just neutral NPCs (not in my game anyway, and I'm playing YOUR many mercs BETA Smile ). In my current game I've only encountered Slay, MOM (Annie) and The Druggist. After killing them, their heads :sick: can be given to Carmen for a $10,000 reward.

EDIT: Of course, just to get this straight: don't EVER kill Slay, hire him instead Smile

The only Caveat to that is; if you hire Slay then avoid meeting Carmen. If Carmen catches sight of Slay he goes automatically hostile and there goes your bounty income.

Ah the assassins. In normal battle they wait until the end & then pounce. However if you have militia in sector plus get close enough with one of your characters it will trigger them "early" so to speak. Depending on how you've tweaked them in pro-edit they'll take out a great blob of your militia or just get gunned down like dogs. Bump up their stats and give them decent kit. Do the same for the wanted terrorists is my advice otherwise it's just too easy to wipe them out.

From what they left behind they had decent equipment. It's just that in a battle between 40 or 50 militia and 20 to 30 soldiers an extra bad guy showing up is hardly noticed.

One odd thing is that their equipment doesn't get autonoticed at the end of combat. I found that out when I was moving some people across a sector and a pile of equipment showed up.

DennisBergkamp, yeah. In my games I talk to Carmen to activate the side quest. Then they start showing in random towns except for the Druggist who is always in the bar in Grumm. Recruiting Slay I never had to hurt him. I just fired a shot right above his head aiming at the wall behind him and that freaked him out enough. Didn't realise I could give him the disk (not that I ever bothered to carry it with me since all the files are in the laptop).

I tried searching for threads on Slay but found nothing on this matter:

If I hire slay instead of killing him, can I then before the contract is over kill him and sell his head to Carmen, or is that option gone once I hire him?

Have anyone considered the fact that he might only offer his services if you're high enough level? Could that be why some have problems hiring him?

Hi level plus disk if you have applied the Recruit Slay patch. Look at his response info in Pro.edit if you like but seems like a combination of direct and or threatening will do the trick. Being too friendly annoys him enough not to join. Same can be said of Conrad & Devin.

That's as maybe, but if you look in pro-edit the friendly approach makes chance to recruit actually go down. Even first contact should be no friendlier than direct or you're on a hiding to nothing.

I'm playing 1.07. In my latest game I'm having a really hard time recruiting him. He starts yelling "You deceitful bastard!" and "You should've backed out when you had the chance." at me and refuses first aid.

And obviously showing him the disc doesn't work since I'm not patched to 1.13.

I know I have recruited him before in a game that was completely unpatched..

Funny thing is that if I enter the area (NE Cambria) with only one merc and have Terry become hostile, if he kills my merc all the militia is gone from the area and I get a message that "Deidranna's forces have just taken over sector #".

He is a freebie and he has nice statistics with a sniper trait.

The only catch is....

He is gone too soon.

Unless, one turns the "Slay forever" setting on via ini editor.

"I still had difficulties getting him in the last game I played to the extent that I gave up on it" - same thing here.
"I've successfully hired him once and did get the "allright you know who I am" speach but I couldn't for the life of me trigger it last time either." - same thing here.

(playing 1.13, build made december 2011).

I think i have found why this happens. Skip to "conclusion" part in the end of the post if you don't want all the details.

First time i did it no problem via:
- talking to him, first choosing "recruit" (he refused), then choosing "threaten" (he stood up);
- hurting him - an instant after he got damage, he told me "allright you know who i am", and his name changed from Terry to Slay;
- using first-aid on him;
- talking with him again and choosing "recruit" (he joined for 7 days).

Seeing it is for 7 days only, i decided to load earlier save, since i had much militia to train in Grumm (found him in it right after clearing it), hoping to recruit him a bit later. This all was at 57th day (in-game).

9 in-game days after, on 66th day, with enough militia trained, repairs done, some close recons made etc, i took the same merc and went to hire Slay. Fail. No matter what i do, i can't make him to say "allright you know who i am", his name remains "Terry". Giving diskette, punching, shooting him or walls nearby (including ridiculous amounts of bullets), using various combinations of these actions and different order of "threaten" and "recruit", - nothing helps. He only turns hostile if i punch him down to "dying" and then reanimate him with first aid - as soon as he gets back to consiousness, he says that line about getting away while having a chance and turns hostile (turn-based mode starts at once). Even at that, his name remains "Terry". Militia of the sector sees him as enemy and kills him on sight.

I am absolutely sure i didn't change anything in .ini files. Didn't open any single ini file at all long before 1st (sucsessful) attempt to hire him.

I also tried one save i had "in between" - during 64th day. Using same merc, tried several times using all mentioned above methods. No success.

Perhaps it is related that quest about terrorists was completed by me on day 58 (after 1st, successful, attempt, but before 2nd - failing one).

Luckily i still have save from 6AM on day 57. ... 2 minutes later: yep, it works no problem same way as described above for 1st attempt, and it works by simply giving him the diskette as well.

CONCLUSION 1:

Slay is not hireable if Carmen's quest is complete.

In my game, Carmen's quest was seemingly complete PREMATURELY. I play with "all terrorists present" setting. 3 heads Carmen paid for, but after 4th head was given to him, he just disappeared, and is nowhere to be found; that 4th head given to him produced usual line "Gave Carmen a terrorist's head" in in-game History, AND also produced "All terrorists have been caught" line right after, which is the line which supposed to indicate completion of this quest. And initial quest's line in History - "Reward offered for terrorists", - became usual white, it's not red anymore, also indicating completion of the quest. Though i suspect this is a case of abnormal quest termination, since Carmen didn't pay 10k for that 4th head, nor he said usual thing about not having that kind of money on him and about meeting him in 24 hours. Just took the head, and disappeared next time i visited the sector. Thus,

CONCLUSION 2:

If you want to hire Slay, then start Carmen's quest (reward for terrorists' heads), but never give away the _last_ terrorist head you have - always have one piled somewhere, only turn the last one in _after_ you have hired Slay for good. Or to be completely safe, just do not turn-in any terrorists' heads to Carmen until you hire Slay!

EDIT: striking out the post; not any bug, just that i didn't figure out that one needs to manually extend Slay's contract to have him to stay longer. Thanks for showing me the light goes to Buggler's post here. ^^
Aaand seems there is just one more little problem with Slay. I am playing JA2 Gold, 1.13.4870 official build with no other mods installed. I had enabled "Slay forever" in main options .ini file before starting my current campaign, i then erased all saves before starting my current campaign. Started campaign, started Carmen's quest, then found him in Cambria. He is perfectly alright to be recruited, problem is - he leaves after 7 days no matter that .ini setting.

To provide additional degree of reliability to this report, i copy said .ini setting into this post right from Ja2_Options.ini file, located in Data-1.13 directory of the game:

Quote:

;------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; Slay Forever - Determines whether the character Slay can stay with your team indefinitely. If set to FALSE, he can
; only be recruited for a limited amount of time.
;------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SLAY_STAYS_FOREVER = TRUE

And i also provide screenshot of game history which clearly indicates Slay leaves 7 days after he is hired, one can also see that Slay is no longer in the team on the left side of the screenshot, and current date in lower right corner for additional confirmation Slay leaves for good. Click to see full 1024x768.
