Just started this game a couple of days ago,

Playing ja2 1.12

Did red the whole forum here, patrusco's guide and the tips on the jag site, but i dont seem to get this right.
Playing the beginning of this game over and over again. They keep shooting me from out of my gun ranges and i cant do anything about that. Tried cover and ok behind a wall im safe but i cant shoot them either.
Tried several aproches, no/stealth, bigger sqauds but nothing seems to work for me.

Dont get me wrong, i love the game sofar, it got such depth, but i just wanna see the light.

Frya,

p.s. excuse my english isnt my mother-language

hi frya

welcome to the forum

as far as cover is concerned, the tricky thing is to learn to use turn-based combat mechanics to your advantage.

so when you shoot at the enemy, you need an open line of fire. once you're done shooting them (at the end of your turn), you can hide behind a wall or go prone if there's nothing else

(best is that you have some guy(s) ready for interrupts. When you hide from the AI, they will at some point come looking for you, which is when you can ambush them easily)

the first map has a lot of houses where you can stand behind, climb ontop, hide inside etc. to get into the weapon's range. slugging it out with them as soon as you see them is only tedious and frustrating. Be patient, don't get into a shootout with them, get a better vantage point, take them out and get back into cover.

after a couple of maps you'll get weapons with longer ranges, but until then, smart movement is vital Smile

Hire one(or two) merc with long range weapon for one day.
Use roof as cover.
Use house's corner as cover.
After first map, try night operation, make sure your IMP have NO skill.
Silenced weapon also help, hire one with silencer for one day.

on open ground, there are some other tactics

adam-sun has already named some. Merc with night ops skill during night operations. just do some traning until some hours before night falls, sleep a bit, then move to drassen during the night, this is easier, also because you only need shorter weapon ranges during night ops.

what i usually do is to move from cover to cover. most experienced merc first until he reaches cover/ concealment

the enemies between omerta and drassen often just rush your position, so once you attack one of them, many others will follow, so if you attack the first one out of a good firing position (entire squad, or at least those who can hit something) most of the others will do you the favor of coming into "your" battlefield.

classic warfare strategie. Define where the battles is held and abuse the advantage Smile

even the sparsest ja2 maps usually offer some bushes or tall grass. Even a single tree can seriously hinder early game enemies to see and hit you. Often, there isn't much solid cover, but seeing them first is another advantage that you can use.

Take cover and don't bunch up...when an opportunity presents itself take full advantage. Early on especially when you only have pistols you need to hit enemies up close and a lot.

It isn't easy and it takes time, but your skills will develop. We have all been there buddy. Remeber this isn't a video game with on shot one kill, and the more hits you take the less your merc can do.

You have good people to higher so use them to their fullest.

Don't be afraid to shoot past a pistols max range, you will miss a lot but if you have a bit of cover to hide behind and fully focus your shot it will pay off, helps bring up Marksmanship as a bonus. If you have HP Ammo use it, a lucky shot with HP at the start of the game will drop most Enemies. The cards are stacked against you when you first insert, so, like the lads have said hire a Merc like Ice to turn the tide with an extra bit of range and skill. Good Ambush tactics are also a great way to start your campaign.

ok so you inserted with six. the 4 with the lowest marksmanship hide behind sandbags or walls or whatever shooting badly and making a lot of noise. meanwhile the two with the highest marksmanship creep round to the flanks or even behind the enemy. Silently taking out lone enemies is also good. provided one merc can see the enemy (full colour view) it might still be worth the others taking a shot (@ a blacked out enemy); chances of this working increase as your team improves. If possible keep a good shooter on interupt duty (e.g. don't use all their points each turn).

Also good tactic for not getting shot by patrols... don't fight. Skirt sector, avoid, whatever... fighting patrols when you have towns to take is waste of ammo and energy.

Umm , but you build experience, weapons and stats . actually fighting patrols is a good way for a newbie to start .

Edit : Never insert with 5 mercs and an imp , go for three mercs at most ( plus imp ), but make them the best you can afford .

I also heard that IMPs are for sissies.

Another trick is to start with no equipment for some of your soldiers, just pick up your first weapon from a dead guy.

Starting with no equipment for all soldiers might be a little too difficult, although the first Omerta sector will have enemies coming around a corner, so you could just punch them dead and take their stuff to kill the other enemies.

:giggle: on necromancer... Very Happy

With vanilla I liked to insert with 6 mercs, if I had to fire a single shot (in the first sector) I counted the game as utter defeat and restarted.

You punched the couple dudes in Omerta during the day? Dang, that would be cool.

I played the 8,000+ enemies save game for Vanilla and waited until night to go to the second Omerta sector. Took me eight hours real time but I finished the sector with a bunch of good weapons.

Yo lockie, do you remember the 8,000+ enemies Vanilla save? Every sector has 32 (or so) enemies. Making it to Drassen takes several days in real time. This is quite something.
