One of my great hobbies besides playing JA is watching movies. I thought it would be nice to start a thread where we post tips about movies that have some relevance to JA. This is not intended to be merely a list of titles, but rather a short description, a IMDB link and perhaps a few words about similarities to JA.

First off is The Wild Geese (1978). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078492/ . The movie is about a handful of British senior mercenaries who are to bust into a military base in central African country Zembala to retrieve the captured president. They are accompanied by other hired mercs, consisting a force of 40. Armed with UZI:s, FAL:s and a crossbow loaded with cyanide arrows (for stealthy sentry removal!), they drop from a C-130 Hercules into the African countryside.

JA relevance: Biggins and Sidney seems to be based on some of the characters in the movie.

This is a great movie, not only for it

Red Dawn (1984) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087985/

"It is the mid-1980s. From out of the sky, Soviet & Cuban troops begin landing on the football field of a Colorado high school. In seconds, the paratroops have attacked the school & sent a group of teenagers fleeing into the mountains. Armed only with hunting rifles, pistols & bows and arrows, the teens struggles to survive the bitter winter & Soviet KGB patrols hunting for them. Eventually trouble arises when they kill a group of Soviet soldiers on patrol in the highlands. Soon, they will wage their own guerrilla warfare against the invading Soviet troops....under the banner of 'Woverines'!"

I think it's pretty known, although I first saw it some years ago late at night. Pretty funny from a today's point of view.
This is where the name of Wolf's civil defense unit comes from and I've also got the feeling that guys like Gumpy or Biff (both as a more ugly Patrick Swayze) could be cut out right off such movies. It is also referred to in GTA: Vice City on some radio commercial.

Next up are two well-known movies about patrols behind enemy lines.

Bravo Two Zero http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120617/
A SAS patrol during the first Gulf War f*cks up and gets lost. I find it interesting to watch because of the simple group configuration. The patrol consists of 8 soldiers, half of them equipped with M249/Minimis and the other half M16A2 with M203 grenade launchers. No sniper rifle or any scoped rifle at all, even though their mission takes place in the vast desert.

The other patrol movie is Tears of the Sun http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314353/
A group of Navy SEALS help out missionaries in the Nigerian jungle. This team actually has some variation in their gear, as opposed to the Brits in B20. M4:s with ACOG:s, M203:s, HK23 silenced pistols, a Mk. 46 LMG (i think), the point man

"Proof of Life" is worth watching only for the last 25 minutes, when Russel Crowe, David Caruso and three other mercs assault a rebel base and free the American hostage. The five-man team are armed with M4, M4/203, a M249 and of course a leatherman knife (to take out the guard). It

Bravo Two Zero got it wrong with the kit then. The point of the four man or eight man SAS unit is that they all have different specialisms and therefore different kit. Obviously they all need to be able to do each others jobs if necessary and mainly mutual ammo is a good idea but I don't believe for one second that an eight man patrol set out without a more varied arsenal. They just don't do that.

I like the Eddie Stone programme. BBC has a knack for making good documentaries - from dinosaurs to history and military subjects. In this show they actually describe what the unit do and how they do it. Too many Discovery programmes on the subject just nags about how bad-ass the unit of the particular show is.

I just watched 300 again...not grant you there aren't to many examples for modern combat, but it is a hell of a thing to watch for motivation.

Also in the United States a series ran called Tour of Duty about an American squad in Vietnam. It was well done and the good advisors were used. I remember watching it college while play JA2 and applying what I saw. Helped me be a better player.

"The Odd Angry Shot" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079652/

A not so well-known (outside Australia at least) movie about the SASR (Aussie SAS)in Vietnam. It can be compared to Jarhead, a lot of slow time at the base, with a few action scenes. The squad is armed with SLR/FAL:s, M16A1, M16A1/203, M60, white phosphourous grenades.

The best thing about that show is 'Paint it Black' as the title music. I found it a little cringe-worthy because you'd get occasional moments where the show practically screams NOT ACTUALLY FILMED IN VIETNAM!

I thought overall it was a pretty mediocre movie, but sure, the JA2 relevance is there. Predator itself needs more of a mention, too, of course. Being slightly over the top in the portrait of the mercs fits perfectly with JA2.

I'll throw in the (also mediocre) Outpost: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892899/ A group of ex-soldiers hired by some guy to scope out an old Nazi bunker in war-torn Eastern Europe to find hidden treasures. The bunker, of course, hides something quite different.

And of course there's the last Rambo movie, where he joins a group of mercenaries travelling to Burma to rescue a few kidnapped aid workers: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462499/

Black Hawk Down. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/ Not so much for the mercenary aspect, obviously, but the "small, well-armed, well-trained squad holding off a force MANY times their size" aspect has JA2 written all over it. Those guys, God bless them, inflicted somewhere between 50-to-1 and 150-to-1 casualty ratios on the Somali militia depending on whose estimates you go with. It's generally regarded as a bad idea to screw with the US Army Rangers. Watch and see why.

The Kingdom. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431197/ There's a rescue scene towards the end that is just amazing. That FBI agent has also got to be the least-compliant hostage I have ever seen. Talk about never giving up.

I'll second Ronin.

One I am very surprised no one has mentioned is "Enemy at the Gates". Russian Sniper and one or two mates work really hard against the German sharpshooter to beat back the Germans. Very well acted and great atmosphere. Pity about the accents and Americanisms in it though. Great for the sniper vs sniper scenes (Vanilla Sniper wars anyone...) and also as the squad trains and has a group of Snipers working together Smile

Ahh...good one! BHD is actually a great inspiration, at least for me when for instance taking Meduna. The gear that the Rangers and the Delta Force use, respectivly, is also useful to have in mind when shopping at BR with 2 million bucks at hand (yes, I cheat in the INI to get lots of money).

Shooter also comes to mind here. The movie actually surprised me in a positive way. Nice sniper wars and sniper training there, and I actually equipped my spotter similar to Mark Wahlberg's spotter in the beginning of the movie.

Interestingly, you can have MUCH better gear than the Rangers and even Delta when shopping at BR because you aren't going through government requisition channels at any point during the process. You can buy gear based solely on the needs of the team and mission with no other interfering factors. Your team can use a mix of weapons and equipment bought from a half-dozen countries that don't even have to like each other.

Yes I saw the trailer for the Expendables and it does seem like a JA style movie. The best of the best being called into do a job in an exotic location. It has almost every action star I remember growing up...looks a little campy, but that doesn't mean it won't be good.

Still wish there were good tools out there...a program really to help you built JA2 mods. I'd love a Red Dawn mod fighting in the mountains of and plains of the United States against Russia and her allies. All the Russian gear is in there, but you'd need to add some American civilian weapons including hunting bows. Not used much in the movie, but would be great for taking out sentries silently.

Predators and Aliens on Arulco would be a hell of a fight. High civilian casualties even for the best player I think, and those aliens can move fast. Still though I think it could be a lot of fun killing sky crepitus...

Not so much as tips, but more information which can help you prevail.

http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Main_Page

Plenty of movies, TV shows, and video games are listed and all the weapons wielded in them...I've looked up many of the weapons in 1.13 which helps me develop tactics better. Cool site for movie fans and gun nuts.
