@Native_Elder: It dosent come across as clandestine, most people wouldnt announce what they were working on until they had something they were happy to show. If you guys are coming up with something that'll improve MP then i'm sure it will be welcome.

@elchimbonda: I know that there are project files for VS2008, i'm not sure if they have been checked into the main branch yet. If you created your own solution file, you should check that the Utils folder is listed in "Additional Include Directories" under C++ in the SGP project options. In the standard setup, its inherited from the main project which builds the .exe . Utils isnly the only dependancy though, best to follow the standard project setup.

Project files for VS 2008 are already in the main branch. There should not be any changes needed to compile. It should compile out of the box...

i was miscommunicating i think. You, rowa21 and redgun, you're the guys working on "improving" the multiplayer. The mod i mentioned is something different and has its own approach to ja2 multiplayer rather than being an improvement over the existing one (partial bugfixes or such notwithstanding).
But the discussion here and the input gained will be important to balancing and gameplay. Most people that were contacted by our modmakers didn't comment a lot about MP, so apart from the tests made thus far inside the team, this mod is kinda hanging in the air community wise (as you can only test multiplayer games with other people, obviously)

but clearly, my activity here also serves to gain insight and see if there's interest.

as for just talking without showing anything, i see it may come across in a strange way, maybe it is very suspect to be mere bragging or bloating. I can understand that, and we'll see what of the content we'd be ready to show. You see on the other hand showing unfinished stuff might be considered "fake" as well, thus, no showing of screenshots yet, even though we made some.

btw does anybody else get a freeze when trying to use printScreen as the client when playing in windowed mode two instances on the same machine againts himself? thx
btw2 only the client freezes, the sever can do the screens.

im not working on development myself, I'm just a rather active player/tester. Smile
It's not that i consider anything for fake or showing off or something else, it was just the practical thought of avoiding another merge. Afaik it was quite a hard piece of work to get Zath's new code included into the build and i don't think another merge is going to make it easier / the game more stable.

So my main motivation was to get you/your team communicating with Zath and RoWa, because it doesn't make sense to have two teams working on the same thing independently, because another merge is certainly not an advantage and because the community is definitely too small to be split up again.
But thats just my 2 cents. Very Happy

you're perfectly correct with this statement. i just can't answer that myself. as far as i know, our coder keeps himself up to date with MP code development insofar as the code branches are public. But really, this goes into things i understand too little about and aren't up to me to answer.

my own role is more shallow than code merges and the like. Plus it'll be a content mod so there will be specific features that have no place in the "true" 1.13 multiplayer.

thanks for the hint

I also think balance is very important, especially when dealing with explosives. that's actually one of the reasons I want explosives. cause right now, best gun + best merc usually wins. shadow with an m82. with things like smoke grenades i can start to see ways to combat snipers and such.

keep in mind that if you didn't want explosives in your game you could edit them out with an xml couldn't you? or even just make a house rule.

I hope that doesn't come off as aggressive.

You guys are missing 95% of the fun of the game because of a simple "not implemented feature"

Explosives are the key!!!

When you are playing in a open country map, the one with the best scope wins. Its as simple as that. So Open country maps will only give you 5% of the fun you can get of this game.

The other 95% are full base maps and fortress maps with a little of open country.

But if you play inside buildings the one with the biggest APs and the fastest burst will win.

To spice up the building fights you need to add tactical busters like:

Simple grenades: smoke, explosive, stun,
You can always trow a nade to a wall with all your strength and it will bounce back - this is used then exiting rooms
Stun at doors - to use the basic "flash stun and clear" SWAT tactic.
Smoke is the only defence a AR user has against a sniper.

Explosives
Can be used like defence, offence, tactical change
Defence: You can trap anyting, wait, explode the poor guy.
Offence: You know some one is behind that wall, you can take them down
Tactical change: Your room only has 1 exit? make a 2

I agree that expl9osives are hilarious fun. however they need to be balanced too, because otherwise its jsut going to be:

open terrain:.........first turn wins (mortars)
urban:................first turn wins (AICW & TB grenades / mortar)
buildings:............stayuing outside and RPGing everything wins Sad

so again, we need to make the really effective ammunition/weapons extremely expensive, AP and $-wise.

edit: Dr-D, I'd love to play some JA2MP with you, if you have time for that Very Happy

OK i give you that, but:

After the explosives suport is added, you can:
- add some config line or flag to disable some/all explosives.
- agree with the other player to never use "abusive type" explosives.

Then we will have a choice.

PS: I realy dont have any time to play ja2, not even 5 secs of SP.
