Take a look at these screenshots and despare at what JA3D could have been.
http://www.gamershell.com/pc/jazz_hired_guns/screenshots.html?id=9

Now look again at the JA3 screenshots and think. Does it really look that its worth the wait? If looks could kill then JA3 should be well berried by now.

yeah, the JAZZ-HG graphics look a lot more like it. though the interface also looks quite strange and uncomfortable.

oh my, hard times for the fans of the franchise!

maybe all will depend on the 1.13 folks to rescue the good name of Jagged Alliance and show those lame pro developers, how it

@Mauser

take into account the fact that the JAZZ HG screenshots are 800x600 resolution. This makes the interface look balkier than it should. It takes up a lot more of the screen than it should.

On the other hand the JA3 are way too polished.

EDIT

Everbody Jazz should be out by March this year, when is JA3 to be released again??? :innocent: :innocent:

why do people..programemrs etc..find the need to try new styles etc of gameplay/look etc on a classic franchise trying to re-invent it..when a graphical upgrade..AI upgrade of the existing look and gameplay styles is actually gonna create a better game that'll keep the fans of the series onside ..trying to make it look or play like a thousand other tossaway copycat games is a cheap copout...ja2 had/has was/is the best game the genre ever produced..personality,look,feel(while outdated) can provide the foundation for an upgrade ..800x600 minimum..double or triple the map size..add new animations and effects..you get the drift..but make it look like its a natural evolution of the franchise..otherwise it aint jagged alliance(anyone ever hear of civilization or age of empires?..those two kept the look with obvious upgrades..and produced great success..use them as yer braintrust for how a sequal should be made)

screens of ja3 imply that you can do a lot with the camera, and the character interfaces as well as the ingame models reflect what they are wearing

the interface is horrific, so are the guns and the faces

what's again interesting is that the faces seem to be animated and look into different directions.

some screens don't even look bad, i think both titles have shot themselve sin the leg by trying hard to go for that "africa-tropical" topical, which isn't easy graphically

Jazz cursor imply that it's played a like RTS or such... characters are more like units of clone-bots or such.

but the kind of conclusion yous people draw from these screens seem exageratted to me. Gameplay will be the central issue for these games, as it was in ja2, not graphics.

and that's what they can't show, so, essentially, we'll only know more about it after there are playable versions... i bet that first version will be plagued by bugs (either title) due to the time pressure, but after a couple of patches...

..who knows?

If those represent Ja3 we really do have a problem. The graphics look o.k. for an early 90s game but I seriously doubt if they have anything to do with ja3.

Actually, this is more like a mid 90s game. JA: Deadly Games, released 1995.

If the game was a week away from going gold, I'd be worried. Otherwise there's still plenty of time for improvement. Judging by the clone faces and clone soldiers, they're placeholder art... That's what I'm sincerely hoping, anyhow.

strategic map: i think this is more of a technical display, the actual map graphics (artwork) isn't yet done, same with the faces

but there seems to be weather forecast for different regions on the strategic map, which might be, depending on weather influence on gameplay an interesting strategic/ tactic aspect

when it comes to the xenophobic, graphics-greedy american gamers, well, they haven't been into ja2 either. Ja2 has sold much better in europa than in the USA, for various reasons

also, in this forums, there are much more non-US americans than in forums for other games

ja2 is a smart game. It takes some time getting into it. There's where you've already lost 80 percent of said target group

then it's a title made by a developer that isn't EA or another large-scale advertisement space buyer that's where you lose another 15 percent of your target group

The target group has probably been much more specialized from the beginning, a game like ja2 and ja3 is simply not the kind of game for the larger masses.

A simplified, chess/checkker-family game that uses mercs with guns and 'entertaining' settings could very well have more than a niche on the market. Only, there hasn't been a developer with the format to do that after Sirtech died. The reason why people prefer certain games like Starcraft, CS and Soldat is that they can get ever better at them. The competitive and multiplayer aspects, that JA2 didn't have. It's not really about bringing on the latest gfx or realtime BS, or ever simplified gameplay. If commercial developers would really deliver quality and support these slightly offbeat game genres should be popular too.

You should really take these shots with a grain of salt

First off, much of what you see is place holder stuff.

Second, these should not have made it to the press.

The in-game environments as shown are representative of the general quality of the layouts and their rendering for certain types of environments.

@Scorpion
There is definitely weather factored in, beyond night/day.
This means that you must have some sort of indication of what the weather is like in an area since it has an impact over a number of stats.

Portraits have nothing to do with what they will be like, we are not on that part yet.

Well

the only thing which could make JA3 a real success is a good storyline, plenty of NPC and the same humor than in the last two episodes.

Editor and game developper can use whatever graphic engines they want, it won't change this.

After that, a serious tactical IA or a multiplayer option, even limited, and a user friendly mission editor (even based on prefabs ...) would also be a great advantage for the game.

the graphics looks very ss-like, which is not bad. but i hope you can zoom out further for a better overview.

more important to me is, if all buildings and other structures are destroyable, so you can blow holes in walls.

the user interface schould be simple without kitschy decorations. more like this one:
http://www.gamingbliss.com/games/unsorted/closecombat2.jpg

some randomized sectors are ok, if they are generated once, at the begin of a campaign. this would increase replay value. but i dont want battles in some generic areas, which are created only for the battle, and can never be visitied again. this would destroy the impression of a complete seamless world.

in fact i like the style of the strategy part in ja1 better than that in ja2. i like to hold and defend all of the ground, and not only some areas like towns, within vast no-mans-land.

The graphics look fine, though the screens are a little low resolution. MUCH better looking than JAZZ. Seen the trailer? Bad graphics, awkward animation, canned destructible environments, no physics to speak of etc. Pretty much what I've come to expect from most Russian developers.

Interface is a bit of a concern and I hope those portraits are just place-holders.

I much more worried about the gameplay and the strategic map.

MUCH better looking than JAZZ.

yes, is has more small details, and if its the ss-engine good physics capabilities.

Quote:
I much more worried about the gameplay and the strategic map.

i am still missing that island from JA1. the sea was a natural boundary of the game world. it had only 60 sectors, but better strategic gameplay than JA2, because there where enemies to defeat in each sector. and you had to hold most of them against enemy attacks. partly because the resources (sap trees) where more evenly disributed around the map than in JA2. this all adds up to more different locations for strategically important (and therefore more motivating) battles. in JA2 the only important battles are those for the few mines and cities. the rest are random encounters with enemy patrols, which are far less motivating to me.

more sectors doesn't mean more fun, especially if its only randomized generic maps, which look all the same in a way. and the only point of vechicles, is then to cross this boring areas, as quick as possible.

..as a non-xenophobic, graphics-greedy American gamer and one who just happens to work/contracts at EA Games...I have less concerns with graphics. I understand profits and its a shame the big name games generate big bucks but none will ever top my list like JA. I got a chance to fiddle with Crysis last friday and though it will probably (when released) sell like hotcakes, it (like so many others) will never have a permanent place on my hardrive like JA.

First of all, I have to say that I like the current graphic of the JA2 game (2D isometric) - just an upgrade to 1024x768 is needed. I don't want a 3D view!

If I ever win a million dollar, I will make a new Jagged alliance with our staff, with all guys of the comunity.
That's a promisse!!!

There seems to be some kind of disconnect with reality if anyone here thinks that Jazz will be any good. The whole point of most people here being opposed to MiSTland developing that crap was because they are unmotivated and untalented hacks that hated Jagged Alliance gameplay to the core. The actual engine and graphics of the game were a joke too, and there are enough posts to prove it.

The new screenies of JA show nothing much except for huge potential. Things look moddable, the graphics are functional and will display the information I need to play. While I don't know anything about the motivation or skill of this new team, I know that it really cannot be worse than Mist I-hate-turn-based-combat Land.

1. I dont see how posts can show that a game engine is a joke, but on the other hand I am disconnected with reality as you put it.

2. You seem to be awfully against mistland which can be understandable concerning their track record so far but understanding can go so far. I have been tracking your posts across the forum and you have been against them since day one.

3. The same people who chose to make mistland responsible for creating JA3d are the ones that also gave over the development of JA3 to this new unproven Russian team.

4. Companies work, as have been tirelesly said with profit in mind (logical) but, strategyfirst works with bargain games in mind. THINK what that will do to your/mine/our precious JA series.

5. Motivation. Well I believe (IMHO) that mistland, now GFI Russia is highly motivated to proove that their product works far better than JA3. Not to mention that they will deliver within the year while JA3 . . . . well who knows it might come out sometime in this century. But I wonder will it JA3 or Silent Storm upgraded?

We know that JA3 is using the almost unmodable SS engine
While JA1 & JA3 are easy to mod... as long you are a c-programmer and have the source code.Flettner
and most of us think the graphics look horrid.
While JA1 & JA2 offered state of the art graphics at the time they came out.Flettner
One thing I hated about SS was that your squad was dropped into a map without the ability to chose an insertion point
This has nothing to do with the SS-engine that JA3 is using. There are many things I hate about SS, but the engine would work for JA, with bigger maps and less restricted camera.Flettner
Almost everyone here seems to agree that the JA3 screen shots look lousy
It looks like Silent Storm, which is still better than Shadow Company of which JAZZ reminds me. I would however prefer something like the "Faces of War" engine.Flettner
From what little I

@Fletner
Sorry to say Fletner but you too are making a number of assumptions here.

The horrid looking stuff is placeholders. Like I mentioned elsewhere, these should not have made it to the press as is. All this does is create easy targets for mudslinging.

It is not because you have not heard about the ability to choose insertion points that they do not exist. Actually, there are many things that have not been mentioned, actually most of the stuff, that will be in.

Lets not mistake engines and games.

One is there to help simplify the creation of the other. Its not the other way around.

So, the engine was used to create SS and now, a modified version of that engine is being used to create JA3.

Then, you say that we had a bad track record with JA? That

To Richard,

I'd just like to thank you for the details you've provided on JA3. I may not be living in 1999 like some others but I'm glad that you seem to be preserving the core mechanics of JA.

Very pleased that the SS engine is being used. First thing I thought of when playing SS was this would make a great basis for a JA game.

I hope you keep posting here, despite the hostile responses that you will get no matter what you do.
