There is really much to worry about. But I believe (yes, I really do!Smile in new JA 3 title. Some of these negative opinions may be true. Whatever. I hope that at least some of my (our) wishes/dreams will come true!.
@Richard
Ja community is most patient in the world. We are waiting for the continuation of the Jagged Allance series for a long time (near 10 years?). So I think we can wait more:-). Please, do not hurry, treat JA3 like a child and take care of it:-).

1. I dont see how posts can show that a game engine is a joke, but on the other hand I am disconnected with reality as you put it.

The posts, the spread of posters and the target audience of this forum did in fact form a consensus that the engine for JA3D was pretty shite. This came from viewing screenshots of the game posted on Mistland's very own site. Of course, with most personal interpretations of what looks 'good', it's in the eye of the beholder, so I have no problem dropping the graphics argument.

Quote:
2. You seem to be awfully against mistland which can be understandable concerning their track record so far but understanding can go so far. I have been tracking your posts across the forum and you have been against them since day one.

Their track-record shows that they seem incapable of publishing a single game that was actually fun to play and worth trying. Sometimes the creative idea behind things was quite good, hell, the idea of making a game based on the KGB's Alfa special forces is pretty cool all by itself. Strangely enough the game turned out to be complete and utter shite.
If you have been tracking my posts across the forums, I'm sure you'll have stumbled across mine and other people's battles with the developers who hated turn-based combat mechanics with a passion. What on earth makes you think that someone who hates the entire core principle of the game he is working on is going to deliver anything but a half-arsed lump of shite?
I'm more willing to give an untried and untested team the benefit of doubt, because, lo and behold, they have not released anything for public scrutiny so I have nothing to judge them on.

Quote:
3. The same people who chose to make mistland responsible for creating JA3d are the ones that also gave over the development of JA3 to this new unproven Russian team.

The same people who chose to then withdraw the responsibility from Mistland because they were dissatisfied with the product being offered? Demons, I tell ya! Sure, they could have done so earlier, or not even bother handing Mistland the contract in the first place, but in the end, they took what I percieve to be the right decision.

Quote:
4. Companies work, as have been tirelesly said with profit in mind (logical) but, strategyfirst works with bargain games in mind. THINK what that will do to your/mine/our precious JA series.

Much worse than what Mist Real-time-at-all-cost,-raaaargh! Land did? Surely not. I'd accuse SFI of working with niche and bargain developers, not just the latter. They have not released an in-house game for quite some time anyway, but the last game had quite some hangers-on (Disciples).

Quote:
5. Motivation. Well I believe (IMHO) that mistland, now GFI Russia is highly motivated to proove that their product works far better than JA3. Not to mention that they will deliver within the year while JA3 . . . . well who knows it might come out sometime in this century. But I wonder will it JA3 or Silent Storm upgraded?

-Motivation? What on earth, after the countless discussions turned into flame-wars posted by Mistland staff about how worthless turn-based games are makes you think that they had the motivation and the required amount of love and care to put into a product that they seemed to seriously dislike? Is this a 'despite all evidence to the contrary' gut feeling?
-Release Date? I don't care when they want to release the game, being first on the calendar does not make a good game. Surely you are not trying to argue it's a race and the first is the winner?
-The technology of Silent Storm was damn good, if it's Silent Storm Upgraded, including all the Jagged Alliance mechanics, as tirelessly repeated by the people making it, that is perfectly fine with me. JA has no room for Panzerkleins, invisible men in the middle of a clear road and a pistol-skill level of 300 meaning you can make three people explode on the other side of the map with just one .38 bullet, so that's most of my criticism of the SS series catered for.

I just *really* want to know what games the lead designer and other key members worked on. Was it S2 or S3, or some no name crap Richard is too embarrassed to talk about? To me, just about everything hinges on that. If it is the latter, then AFAIC, the SF rep is just continuing his job as damage control guy and we're little better off than when those retards at MistLand were making the game.

Screen Shots look cool.. Hope the 3D does not cause game to lose some of the existing features.. Destructable walls that kind of stuff... Hope that the game doesn't end up being Linear... The freedom to Pick & Choose are what makes JA2 and Beyond ....... UNIQUE ...... and different from D & D, Fall out, Rainbow .. and all the rest of those duds!

We are not seeing this in the appropriate way. I'd like to shed some light on the fact that SF lost, in the first quarter fiscal 2007, close to one million dollars. Not only that, but for those of you who do not know, SF also owes tens of thousands of dollars in royalites to a developer named Introversion, this happened when Strategy First filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2004 and suspended all royaltie payments. If you ask me, i don`t care wether the game has good graphics or not. I don`t see the game being realeased.

What can i say, as of know Strategy First financial situation doesn`t look very promising, definitive bankrupcty will be a reality if they dont get the cash flowing. Wonder what Linda and Ian think of this.

No.

Not Mistland but another Russian company. Richard says these guys actually played and liked the game and for once he seems to be on the same page with this team. This is good news to folks who like ja2 a lot since he has assured us that he doesn't seek to remove any features that made Ja2 a great game.
Building on the Silent Storm engine seems a natural choice to me for a 3d game since it had a lot of the elements (though clumsy interface) that made Ja2 so good.

Especially since they're taking their time on this I am optimistic that it will at least be a good game. Something that plays as good as Ja2 shouldn't be too much to ask with today's technology. If they approach it with the attitude of just upgrading the existing game with a brand new platform while retaining all the great gameplay features I don't think they can miss with this.

If someone tries to reinvent the whell though.....

I thinks they can improve graphics without 3D... And since to me JA plays as a board game who needs it.. I think that in 3d that each grid map would be much smaller than it is now because the figures and other animations would be so much bigger.
Maybe they could bounce back & forth for example the animated views the the enemies head blowing apart. The hit with a crow bar.. etc .. You know it would bounce into a 3d view to give you a great view of a battle scene for example you thrw a grenade into 3 enemies... You get to see it up close and then return to the traditional board until the next critical hit.. Just my idea

I agree that it definately doesn't need to be 3d. If one little feature has to be sacrificed to make room for 3d I say that's one feature too many. But I don't think they need to sacrifice anything to get that these days and they seem committed to 3d.
It is such a labor intensive aspect for seemingly little reward but i have heard that 3d will actually make way for things like movable vehichles and multi storied buildings. True, these things aren't necessary either but would be nice additions and if 3d paves the way here I'm for it on the condition that the interface remains uncomplicated by the need to keep fooling with the camera angle and gameplay features do not suffer.
If you need to play around with the camera that will be a real drag but if the game becomes linear or if there are restricted tactical options due to 3d accomidations I'll say that was a foolish experiment and most likely the death nell of the series.

I don't believe Richard will let these things happen. His vision of what Ja3 should be is almost exactly (or as close to exactly as I can glean having never actually sat down and talked to him) as my own. He has come out time and again to rebuff rumours about non destructable walls and linear gameplay and if I'm hearing him right these days they have made it possible to even change factional alliance which will really make for some interesting storyline potential. I hope the changes in alliance are the exception lest it become annoying ala Priest conversions in Age of Empires but I have a lot of faith that this will at least be a game worth playing one time through.

Keep in as many gameplay features as already exist in Ja2, make maps at least the same size and throw modders a bone or twenty and they'll have something I'll be playing for the next decade.

This Akella guys (the new developers) are definately not the same as Mistland. While all their games are far from revolutionary they made the well recieved Sea Dogs and also Pirates of the Caribbean. They also have a game that looks very promising, have a look at it here: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/heavyduty/index.html
I'm sure they'll make a decent job out of JA3 :venus:

Pirates was made in 1987 but still is a great game.

i for one will not flame you, i agree with everything you said. that is if Richard has managed to transform everything that makes JA2 so unique and special.

for example has anyone ever played GalCiv (2D), the sequel is GalCiv II (3D) it has everything GalCiv have plus some cool addition (designing ship in 3d) and i love that sequel more that the first GalCiv Smile

point i been trying to make all along..keep whats already there..but improve it with current graphics..inproved AI..increase size and scope..but the basic style and look with a modern twist will make the most successful new JA game..a complete rehash would spell disaster and wouldnt truely be a JA game..look at the original..then well..deadly games..lol..then ja2 then UB...each improved on the previous in certain areas..while deadly games and UB were just basically offshoots as opposed to sequels..they improved certain areas of the game that preceeded them..its been 8-9 years since ja2 came out..so..a it would be a big jump for AI.graphics size and scope..but the core of the game itself can be retained

The big point I am going to make is you all buy the game when it comes out then report back to the rest of us and if it is a true JA game we well be tearing the doors off the stores to buy JA3. However, if it is crap then you Richard and SFI are stuck with it. We are the people who what to play this game, possibly buying this game, and we are the ones you should satisfy, or you can play it all by yourself while we play JA2 v1.13, and if JA3 is not as good as v1.13 I will not be buying it period.

uhhh...no, there isn't actually all that much Jagged alliance fans out there (since it only sold much in intelligent countries).
So the game developers can't just concentrate on making us happy, otherwise it will be an financial disaster.

And a true fan would buy a bag full of shit for 10 bucks if the bag had "Jagged alliance" written on it.

It's already been mentioned in another thread. But I just want to voice my troubled mind and spread the bell of concern here, harking:

dread the duck-waddle animation

And if it is the same engine as the SS/Hammer & Sickle franchise -- then bigger maps, smaller characters would be out of the picture. The engine, pleasing to the eyes it maybe, is just not optimized enough to handle the same ratio size as it had with JA2 maps.

And I hope the 'critical' ZOOM in death sequence aren't included in JA3. It became repetitive lightning quick.

Otherwise, the game has the potential to please and wow neophytes and o'l devotees alike.
