Thanks for letting me know. The "deadlocks" were indeed just how you described them. I'll have to be patient I guess.

Anybody seen Spaceviking?

I'm still alive. Things just got shuffled around at work and for a short time I have to do both my work and the work of someone who transferred out of my department.

My betas are quite out of date with the current code and missing several fixes that I made as well as some others. I should probably make a new one.

I've looked at some of the recent posted bugs and don't see them in the very latest code.

@spaceviking: Is it possible that you can change the actual source in that way, that your new assertions only work in debug and for release we use the "old" assertions (like it was before)?

The reason for this is, that your new assertions are a little to strict for release version so players complain about a lot of assertions (e.g: same grid for pathfinding, ...) and they cannot continue their games.

I personally like your new assertions. It is very useful for testing. But for release version it would be cool to "enable" the old assertion style.

The same grid thing is not something I did. I added the sector ones. I'll look at doing something to add levels of them.

I have two questions regarding the mod:

Is is possible to use this at the same time as HAM? (I mean running the game with both sets of features activated and available)?

Are there any plans to externalize the setting whether the mines run out of money or not? I really dislike that part of the game. I would gladly play with Deidranna has unlimited recruits but running out of money has me scared.

Don't know about HAM; you should ask in a thread about it.

I've no plans on doing anything with the mines but I vaguely recall that someone else was doing something with externalizing them (moving the info to a .XML file). One of them running out is just part of the game. If you are running out of money you are probably spending too much too soon. You can up your starting cash to avoid that.

BTW, this is no longer a "mod" as all the changes are now part of the main code.

The mod is part of the SVN now? I recall you telling me via email that you would create a new beta release, is that done already then?

My biggest problem now is the fact that I'm getting assertion failures on the border sectors. I thought that it was only the top ones, but the leftmost ones such as Grumm are causing other assertion failures with an X instead of a Y.

Will my saves, created with version B007n be compatible with the newest .exe?

Yes, saves should now be compatible. The code that handles sectors has always been buggy and I added some code to help find the problems. I fixed most of the problems and that is in the SVN code.

There seems to be an incompatibility between the options-ini and your savegame, both need to have the same setting. So if your savegame is set for 24 mercs, and the ini says the maximum is 32, then you cannot load that save.
I found this during bugtesting savegames from other people, who had other settings in their savegames (one had 24, another had 32) than I had in my ini (I have 30). Once I changed my ini, I could load those saves.

So if you want a game with a maximum of 32 mercs, I'm afraid you'll have to start a new game.

That's exactly what happened to me, too. (and I didn't change .ini file, yet. All settings are default)

Fresh v1.13 install (that works ok). When I tried to run your version it first told me that fmod.dll was needed (ok, downloaded), then smackw32.dll was needed (downloaded that, too). The third attempt just returned me to the desktop before the game screen was loaded without any notice.

Is there any other file that I need?

32 mercs works fine; I have a game going with that right now. I will go try with the latest SVN built thought to see if there's something wrong there.

Started a new game with max set to 32 and it worked just fine. What other .ini settings have you changed?

There is no cash limit other than whatever the game puts in place normally.

Well, unfortunately there isn't really anything to describe. Hard disk trys to load the game (the light bleeps), for a brief moment (0,5 sec) a black screen appears and then I'm returned to the desktop. No pop-up message, no nothing. As if nothing happens.

Rename your own .ini and get the default one from SVN and see what happens when you start a game. Gradually add your changes back in.

Aaah, if you see the Sir-Tech screen and then have a crash then you might be missing the TITLETEXT_MP.STI in the JA2/Data/Loadscreens folder. Get it from the SVN-Server and see if the crash stays.

Coming up from Space Viking...

There are two things that I started working on but got sidetracked by some other stuff.

One was to begin adding some "spice" to the strategic AI. There was another discussion about this elsewhere. Anyway, I wouldn't completely revamp it but add some things to make the strategic AI less predictable. This would be completely optional of course.

The other was to externalize more stuff about merchants. Right now their merchandise selection is configurable but how they actually select from the list, how much money they have, and a few other things are hard coded. This is actually quite easy to do and I was nearly done with it but I'm not sure where I stashed the changes.

So anyway, I will probably finish #2 first and then start on #1. So keep your eyes peeled over the next few weeks...

In doing this I am thinking of just adding some new stuff into the existing .XML files. If the new stuff doesn't exist the current built-in behavior would be the default. So one of the XXXXInventory.XML files would in the future look something like this (Using Tony as an example):

          0.75
          1.25
          0
          0

               15000
               15000
               100

            1
            10
            1
            10

          ...some more stuff...

		0
		55
		0

My goal is Monday for the merchant stuff.

Now I expect a few things may not work right if tweaked. For instance, setting Tony to be a repair guy probably will not work because I expect there is some code tucked away here and there that *knows* that Tony is a weapon dealer and not a repair guy. But Hopefully we can root most of that stuff out fairly easily.

The basic settings (income and such) will work right off.

I added the code to read in the new data from the inventory files and made a horrifying (to me) discovery. There's no error handling in that code. I checked and it's the same in all of them. I'd guess that someone did one of these and everyone else just copied it. I tried a few things and errors in the XML are either ignored or just cause the program to die with no messages. This isn't acceptable.

I'll continue working on the new stuff tonight but I am also going to see about adding some error detection and handling. Once I have it going for the inventory XML we can propagate it to the other XML reading code.

OK, as you can tell from my .sig I made a new beta available. This has all the latest updates from SVN in it plus the above changes for the dealer inventory.

A few notes:
0) You MUST specify ARMSDEALERINDEX if you use any other field.
1) You don't have to update any of the dealer inventory files as they all default to the existing behavior. You can do things piecemeal, too. So if you just want to change Tony's max cash you can change just that.
2) You can't change dealer basic functions (yet). So Tony will buy and sell and not repair things and so on.
3) I don't know what effect changing those ARMS_DEALER_XXXX flags have. Use at your own peril!
4) Changing ARMSDEALERINDEX and SHOPKEEPERID will probably break things in the game. Again, change at your own peril!

The arms dealer indices are:

0: Tony
1: Franz Hinkle
2: Keith Hemps
3: Jake Cameron
4: Gabby Mulnick
5: Devin Connell
6: Howard Filmore
7: Sam Rozen
8: Frank
9: Bar Bro 1
10: Bar Bro 2
11: Bar Bro 3
12: Bar Bro 4
13: Micky O'Brien
14: Arnie Brunzwell
15: Fredo
16: Perko
17: Elgin
18: Manny
