I recently began playing using an older version of the 1.13 patch, now I've updated to the 2085 version and the saves will load properly after the prompt "Update Old Saves and Continue". However, after saving the game under the new 1.13, then loading the saved game results in the game only loading 75% of the bar, then CTD.

The game obviously works, as loading the old version saves works fine as does starting a new game. The problem comes around saving under the new version. Any ideas?

I tried installing on another PC, this one running Vista, and now I don't get CTD... I get an error message instead. Trying to load *any* save brings up the message: "ERROR: Cannot load game", even starting a new game, saving then trying to load it results in the error message.

I really enjoy using 1.13, but this new version simply doesn't work for me.

You may need to start a completely new game, lots of things have changed, I am surprised you got the "Update Old Saves and Continue" message and the old save worked afterward.

I would start a new game, but even starting a new game gets the error message. For example: I can start a new game, play but when I save then load that game, I get the error message.

 Did you send your savegame to anyone else to test whether or not they can load it? If they can, then loading does not work for you, if they can't, then saving does not work properly on your machine.

I found out my working version where my saves are from, is version: 1.13.687 Build 07.01.2008.

Anyone know where I can get this old version? I remember it was a one click installer.

Hi Llama, your install may need to be redone if the problem persists. Do a fresh vanilla install and then copy the 1.13 over the existing install.

 I'm actually having a similar problem on my Vista machine, I can't load saves at all, not even on my vanilla JA2 install.

 Two things to try (separately):

1) Run JA2 as an administrator and see if it works.
2) Disable your AV program.

 It's the admin thing. Vista doesn't allow programs to edit their own files in some cases (usually older software which assumes admin rights) and this can occur with JA2. Right click on the JA2.exe (or the shortcut) and select Run as Administrator and that should solve the problem.

 The problem is JA2 writes into its installation directory in the Program Files folder which is generally considered to be a Bad Idea. Someone should update it to use the documents folder as more current programs do.

You know, that makes me think of something. I've never had trouble with JA2 on Vista but then I don't install it into the Program Files folder but into a Games folder on a different drive. Could someone who is having trouble try changing the install folder from ...\Program Files\... to ...\Games\... and see what happens?

 It's been quite a while since I did any desktop support for W95/98, did updates to those include adding "My Documents" folders? If it did then saving to there would be a capital idea. If not it might annoy a lot of people still using that old PoS OS for gaming compatibility.

 Yes, even as early as Win 95 programs were supposed to use the documents directory to save data.

 Program Files is considered sensitive by Windows and it protects it heavily with UAC.

You can indeed set it to a different install directory (or just move the install folder Wink ) and that will accomplish the same thing. As long as the program doesn't edit files in the Program Files folder (or subfolders) UAC doesn't get tripped as hard (sometimes does but again dependant on program).
