Can i add a simple picture as an avatar? Like, if i don't want them to blink or move their mouths, i simply want to use a static picture, is it possible?

Yes, it is possible. What you do, is to create the sti face file and insert 7 frames after, that are filled with the colour key of your sti file. If your colour key is (0,0,255), which is full blue, then you add simply 7 blue frames to your sti file. Leave all coordinates at (0,0) and your good to go.

hello,
just got back to Arulco after all these years, big thanks to all you modders for the great work!!
I'm wondering tho....can it really be that no one has done a Charles Bronson IMP/Merc yet?
http://image.toutlecine.com/photos/b/r/o/bronson-charles-01-g.jpg

I mean... just look at this picture...it's like he had it made just to get modded into the game

I think you all have done a great job on making the sti's, keep up the good work.

I do have a few questions though.

1. Is it possible to implement this into a small program that would make this easier for the not so programming savvy (read: me)

2. Kazuya: I like many of your sti's but how do you coordinate the mouth and eyes, the only way I know of is to use the sti-edit and that is by trial and error. I would really like to know how to use the faces viewer to coordinate the eye and mouth movements especially since you have provided the coordinates in the first place. But I have no clue on how to save it as an sti, you can only save the ini. At least I thought the FV was the coordination editor and voice sync, but I might be mistaken.

And again I love the work that has been done. I'm trying to learn more so I can contribute to the community as well.

Edit: Just remembered the last question as well: The sunglasse (and maybe som other face items too) are not in the proper place. Is there anyway of giving them some new coordinates?

@ Nejrael,

1. Read through this topic. It's a lot of info, but it has the keys on how to download a face and just drop it into the game. All the faces I make just need to be dropped in the respective program folders. It makes sense if you start thumbing around them. I'm sure most of the other faces that everyone makes are similar.

My advice is to find the tutorial on how to make a gun pic. That's a good start. If you can make a gun and put it in the game, then a face isn't that much harder.

Get photoshop. Don't be a slacker like me. Photoshop faces seem to look much better.

Also, be patient. I never attempted anything like this prior to. I think the first face I made took a week or so and then I had to keep doing it over and over to fix glitches. Each time I do it, I get a little better. I can make and animate a face in about 3-4 hours now.

Lastly, know that nobody has the perfect system. We all do things a certain way as that's what we know. That doesn't mean it's the best way. There's room here for improvement. Maybe you'll be the one to make the perfect face modding program.

Thank you for the quick reply. I have read the topic many times over. It's actually my favorite atm.

I do understand the way of just dropping the sti's in the right folders, but the you nust have the exact picture in the right spot since the picture is made with with the coordinates for that specific spot.

My main problem is the coordination, the animation just takes patience and time. The guides to just make a face is rather good. Of course there is some holes here and there in my little knowledge, but nothing I can't find after a few hours of searching. But I still haven't found a better way of coordinating the eyes and mouth than using sti-edit, start the game and see how far off I was, then rinse and repeat until successful.

I'm using gimp btw.

I do apologize for any spell-fails. English is not my native language Smile

No worries about the spelling.

What I do for the coordinates is completely opposite.

1- I get the face I want to mod and copy paste all related pics from sti edit to MS paint.

2- I play with the face, mouth and eyes to make an outline of where the mouth and eyes would go. Note the red frame that I attach with all my pics. You can also find frames that others have made. I wasn't the first.

3- When I'm done with the pic, I'm able to just drop it in without playing with coordinates.

But I have no clue on how to save it as an sti, you can only save the ini. At least I thought the FV was the coordination editor and voice sync, but I might be mistaken.

The FV is merely a quick way to find out if the given coordinates of a face file are correct or not. I don't use it, when I create faces. The coordinates are usually not stored in the sti file itself, although you could do it this way. The coordinates are set in the MercProfiles.xml in the tabledata folder. A convenient way of setting them, is to use the Merc Profile Editor.

This is, what my face files usually look like:
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2415/leechshowqi.png

I try to create a certain format, that is used in the game. In my example it is 90x100. I copy the face several times and I draw over the existting faces the different animations. When I'm done with that, I create a red frame around the picture and two red frames around the mouth and eyes. If you use GIMP, the coordinates can be determined easily, by selecting and copying one picture (including the outer red frame) and press Ctrl+Shift+V. This brings up a new window filled with the image in the correct size. Next I select the pencil with a one pixel brush, zoom into the new picture and move the mouse to the upper left corner of one of the inner red frames. The coordinates shown at the bottom left corner of the Gimp window are the coordinates used in the game. Wink If you try this with the image, which I just posted, you should get Leechs eyes coordinates (20,32) and mouth (20,60). Then I copy the first image and create the sti file with GRV. The animations are inside the red frames, so I paste them into the sti as well and that's essentially it. The 48x43 is exactly the same procedure.

For those of us modifying these files, which face numbers are associated with male IMPs, and which for female IMPs?

Basically I wanted to use the "Static" and "Spider" faces that are in a couple of these packages, but obviously I need to change the file names to whatever the appropriate IMP portraits are before overwriting them, without accidentally overwriting another customized portrait or accidentally assigning a portrait to the wrong gender. :openmouth:

trial and error.

Just pay attention to which one you replace and rename it or copy it.

What? That's what I'm trying to avoid doing, here. It makes no sense that the existing IMP faces wouldn't have specific values assigned to them on every single install.

I guess I should download the "killer IMP" pack, at least that would give me 6 known IMP portraits. Then I just have to figure out which 3 are male, and which 3 are female. With the end aim being to give myself portrait options for a full 6-person IMP team. Just... portrait options that aren't the ones in the killer imp pack.

Oh, didn't know I could do that. Or know of the existence of IMPPortraits.xml, for that matter. Thanks for the tip.

Edit: for anyone interested, looks like the default IMP portraits are 200-207 and 216-217 for males, and 208-215 and 218-219 for females. I'm assuming the double ranges for each gender are due to the new portraits 1.13 added?

This guy looks great. Problem is, I can't get his mouth animation to properly line up. I've tried adjusting the numbers, but nothing looks right. Anyone know what they are supposed to be set to?

Edit: NM, looks like I also have to start a new game after adjusting the values. My save game retains the messed up animation. Numbers seem to be what static's are set to, which makes sense as the portrait was originally for him.

Halo.

I made this into IMP 202. Wasn't happy with my original 202 hack job. It was a bit attrocious and I was tired of looking at it after a few skirmishes.

So, of course credit needs to go to Off Topic. This was his creation for Static originally. All I did was hack away to make it fit IMP202. It only took me a few minutes. He probably spent a lot more time and concentration animating it and getting the colors just right.

I think most people here don't want to take false credit for someone else work so I would like to correct this part of your post. The original credit for the Frank West face as replacement for Static goes to Calu!

My Apologies Calu! I thought OT was refering to another program or something when he said "these were made by Calu". There's a million and one abbreviations and acronyms on this site. Sometimes I have no idea what a post is refering to.

Nice work BTW.

So, I had another go at a dude this time. I'm quite happy with it. I even used Gimp 2.6 for the first time and added a background. (I tried before actually, but sucked at it)

I am still not able to get the coloring exactly how I want it for JA2 style but I'm much closer than before.

Interesting to note that I still had better picture quality when I resized the picture in MS Word instead of Gimp.

Anyways, heres IMP 206;

This one was a pain in the booty. I did it, but it took a lot of rework and it didn't come out the way I wanted it to.

I had a hard time modding it with the angle of the face. Blah blah, it was a tough one for me to mod.

I feel like I'm a little shadowed by Kazuya. He does great work and I'm still learning. But I can give it a try.

I'm familiar with all the good work on JADG. But you'll have to point me in the right direction as I have not played it yet.

Who all is missing and where was Kazuya getting the face picks from?

Here are the faces. Kazuya used them as a starting point and reworked them to JA2 style.

Also, I've finally completed Doc Koolhan's voicepack. He was tricky because he had two different voice actors for JA and JA:DG. The pack includes speech, battlesounds, and an edt file. http://www.mediafire.com/?3me8t5319w1wxwl

This was one of the first faces I did and now that I'm a little more practiced I went back and did a little rework. I forgot how many corners I had cut before. I only changed the animated in-game face. So, if you're currently already using this face, you can swap it without having to start a new game.

It's much better now.
