Hello, Ace...You're attendin' Frank "Hitman" Hennessy's, mercenary for hire, class on combat survival. Well, i've finally done it, i've thrown in the towel after a lifetime of overthrowing dictators and taken up teaching. So, listen up, Ace, you might just learn a thing or two!

The campaign begins before you even reach the LZ, Ace, hire the right Mercs to make life a little easier on yourself, consider landing with a Merc experienced in Night Ops, personally, i always like to have "Raven" in front of me., if you get my drift...

Check out the gear your boys are packin', always good to have a boy handy with an S.M.G. or a Medic the first few days, Ace.

Use the freakin' right ammo for the job Ace! Don't be like that pinhead Raider, wouldn't know a 9mm round from squirrel droppings! I've brought in "Ice" to cover Guns & Ammo.

What's up, dude? "Hitman" asked me to give you some on-the-job training. I've brought in some Ammo types that should come in handy, gotta stay ready for anything.

Don't forget to use cover, Ace, you can press the "Delete" key to get a better feel for your surroundings. If trees get in your LOS, hit "T" to clear things up. Remember, Ace, if the saps can't see you, they can't shoot you.

Things have changed a bit since i first started, Ace, i'll let "Wolf" fill you in on the details.

Hold on to your socks, your about to get a crash course on dealing with slime balls the Peter Anderson way, this New Inventory (NIV) will leave you prepared no matter how many numbnuts get in your way. Take it easy on the trigger when using Auto Fire or you may fire off more rounds than you had intended!

Be prepared, L.B.E. stands for Load Bearing Equipment, TBC = Turn Based Combat, and RMB = Right Mouse Button.

When you're takin' heat the last thing you want is a Backpack on, only slows you down. Remember, Stay alert. They'll probably pop out the moment you drop your guard.

Firepower, the difference between life and death, you'll need to lay down suppression fire every now and again, or just blow something up. If you want to make it out in one piece, learn how to take out multiple targets and aim at strategic points.

Keep the freakin' door closed, Ace, keeps the draft out and leaves you less to worry about, have someone ready for unwelcome guests(Green) and keep an eye on those flanks (Red +'s). In this op "Nails" (Light Orange) has a good spot with a Shotgun, remember, use slugs for distance and switch to Buck Shot when you can smell 'em.

Know how many saps have occupied the sector, Ace, and keep a counta how many you bag. You can ready your gun by pressing "L" to look and then press it again when you see it turn red, this'll save you a bita time, Ace, and a few AP's (Action Points).

Whoa, nearly forgot, Ace, never walk past a window, always crawl and use "L" to pop up and see what's goin' on, remember, just because you can't see them ace, doesn't mean they can't freakin' see you. Only use "Page Up" when you know they're too far away to mix you up! Be patient, Ace, they ain't goin' nowhere.

Shoot from behind cover and know how many AP's it takes to get your butt back down again, Ace, take it away from your aim and your laughin'!

This is where it gets hot and heavy, Ace, lucky ya got me to help you out. First things first, Ace, sort out your equipment, if you're going in at night, ya need to be extra careful. You won't have time to spend your dough on fancy gadgets at the LZ, ya gotta make do with what you have.

Now's as good a time as any to use that Camo Kit you've been saving, give that and any Laser Sight, Pistol Suppressor, or Extended ear you have to your "Night Ops" guy, i hope you had the sense to hire a specialist, Ace, at night ya can't see jack shit out there, so load up your point man and stay behind him. Let him take the heat (Green Arrow), that's what he does, Ace.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
Quote:
I can't see a freakin' thing, Ace!

Stay away from light sources(Cross Bones)but use them to your advantage, even a two bit Merc like Gasket can get the drop on a sap if he strolls in to full light. Keep your belly close to the ground, Ace, those boys probably have Night Vision Goggles, use guerrilla tactics and don't stay in the same spot after firing, make the darkness your friend. You'll have a lot more accuracy firing from a prone position, Ace, but always work in pairs or as a team (Red Dot), you don't want to be caught with your trousers down.

Hit "Alt Z" to order all your boys to stealth mode, Ace, and "=" to select them all, "Page Down" to tell 'em to hit the dirt. Relying on sound is even more important at night(Red Box), you'll hear more than you can see without the proper equipment, Ace.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Wolf.jpg
Wolf here, Night Ops are probably your best bet early on if you are relying on pistols and S.M.G.'s, the gunfights will be up close and personal so gun ranges will be shorter. Throw on a silencer and keep it discreet, Wolf out...

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Ace1-1.jpg

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
If your going in at night ace without Break Lights or proper gear, ya gotta stack the cards in your favour, choose your entry point carefully, somewhere nice and quiet (Large Green Dots), move slowly over short distances and stop every now and then to take in your surroundings (Green Eye). Don't forget, Ace, you can make Molotov Cocktails by tearing up a rag with your knife and stuffing it into a bottle of alcohol, be sure to set the night on fire!

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Entry.jpg

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
Hit "G" to toggle on/off the light around your Merc, move towards cover and set up ambushes. Throw a rock to draw out the enemy and be ready to take 'em out, Ace, remember, make the most of the darkness. If you get caught in a thunder storm, be on your toes, Ace, a flash of lightning can give away your position and the rain makes it harder to see those saps!

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
Most importantly, Ace, take off the freakin' sun glasses!

Ah, i get you now, no, Scully is a Brit, he does have a bit of an Irish accent going on though, maybe second generation? Sullivan is an Irish surname, originally it would have been adopted from the Gaelic name O'Suileabhain which in Irish Gaelic means the descendants of "One-Eye". Don't ask...

Bull, Devin, and Mickey are the only Irish characters IIRC. Bull is the only one that half sounds Irish, the other two have a very "Top o' da mornin' ta ya" type accent.

I went with Hitman because he's a fun character and probably one of the first Mercs i ever hired. It's a bit of fun, but when i'm finished hopefully it can help people out.

I really like that you're doing this from the point of view of a minimally equipped squad and without any spoilers. It's the missing manual for basic JA2 1.13 play. This is something that'll help a lot of the new folks.

Maybe in a future episode Hitman can explain how the los (line of sight) and cover indicators work and the weapon cursor indicators for various fire modes. New players have asked about things those in the past. They have been outlined before, but I like the style of your tutorial and you're doing a great job of diagramming it with a squad in play.

If I can think of anything else I'll pass it along, but I think you're covering the bases quite well, sir.

Cool, i hadn't really planned on it being a guide to 1.13, but when you said it, it made sense, i added the LOS feature and a bit more at the top of the post, including a rough overview of the NIV and a cheeky way to cover the firing modes.

Ok, Ace, so you're feelin' lucky, here are some tactics for a Day-Time assault with basic equipment, i'm not gonna hold your hand, Ace, you'll be on your own out there, learn to adapt!

In this first exercise, Ace, your men have been caught off guard in the open. It's not always the best idea to return fire, if you have to, make sure you get your head down! Don't stay bunched together either, a stray bullet or grenade can do serious damage to your whole squad. If there's a bita space, less chance of collateral damage.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Attackday-1.jpg

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
If you can, Ace, try to get your men behind cover or into a better tactical position, as we'll see in this next video.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Attackday2-1.jpg

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
As you can see, Ace, by ordering your men to better positions, they have every approach covered(Plus Signs)and are out of danger. All that's left to do is get the sap on your terms.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Attackday3-1.jpg

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Wolf.jpg
Wolf here, notice how the squad dropped their Backpacks in order to move faster. Remember, fight on your terms and all the training will pay off, use HP ammo if ya got it early in your campaign, get into range by hiding in buildings, using rooftops, and the blind side of houses. Don't be afraid to shoot past your guns range if you have to. Wolf, out...

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Ice.jpg
Yo! Ice here, "Nails" is using a Spas 12 shotgun loaded with 12 Gauge Slugs to take out the bad dudes in the maneuver above.

Quote:
A combat shotgun is a shotgun that is intended for use in an offensive role, typically by a military force. The earliest shotguns specifically designed for combat were the trench guns or trench shotguns issued in World War I. While limited in range, the multiple projectiles typically used in a shotgun shell provide increased hit probability unmatched by other small arms.

Quote:

The combat shotgun has evolved from its original role as a short range combat weapon into a wider role in modern times. With proper configuration, ammunition and training, the modern combat shotgun plays three roles:

1. Offensive weapon
2. Breaching system
3. Less lethal crowd control

Think it out, Ace.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/sweep-1-1.jpg

Every move you make, Ace, determines how the battle unfolds, in the snap below you have some choices to make.

You've secured your entry point, now it's time to clear the sector. If you follow the red path you're more than likely walkin' into a deathtrap, Ace. There could be a Sniper (Shades) on the roof or gunmen (Gun)waiting by the window, and where are you? Right in their freakin' Kill Zone!

The orange path is a bit safer, got some cover but you're still putting yourself at unnecessary risk, Ace...

I'd take a Merc along the blue path to "Overwatch" the middle of the sector and provide covering fire if needed, this way you can move the rest of the Squad along the Green path in the comfort of decent cover. It's always best to move in short bursts between cover, as you can see, Ace, if you go for the red or orange path, you end up in the open over long distances.

[color:#006600]Leap Frogging[/color]

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Wolf.jpg
Wolf here, so you know where your going, now i'll show you how to get there safely. If you adopt the "Buddy System" or "Leapfrogging" you'll get there in one piece.

You need two attacking forces or at least two Mercs for this to be effective, Team A and Team B. The idea is to advance and suppress the enemy. Team A fires at the target while Team B changes position so as to advance on the enemy, moving to a location with adequate cover and a clear line of sight to engage the target.

When the signal is given, the Teams switch roles, Team B now suppresses or redirects the enemy while Team A moves. If the slimeballs are unaware of your squads, it may be possible to hold fire and conduct part or all of the movement without being observed. Remember, victory is still measured by foot.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
The Opfor (Opposition Force) has made their move first, always deal with the present threat before carrying out a plan, Ace. Here we see how defensive positioning comes into play...

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/alt-1.jpg

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg
The attack has been dealt with successfully (See Below), by redeploying to cover and using the advantage of a rooftop to spot the enemy. Notice how "Wolf" only has visible contact on one sap, Ace, the other two appear blacked out (Red Stickers) to indicate they can be seen by other members of the squad. Just because he can't see 'em doesn't mean he can't fire at them or throw grenades.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Wolf.jpg
Be prepared! When moving on a Roof Top, try to move in straight lines, moving diagonally can slow you down.

Dude, the gun used for the "Spec Fire" op was a HK UMP45. It's a submachine gun (SMG), a firearm that combines the automatic fire of a machine gun with the cartridge of a pistol, and is usually between the two in weight and size.
Quote:

The submachine guns posses several qualities that are very useful in certain military scenarios. For example, submachine guns can be easily silenced, making them very useful for various special operations forces.

The police and security use of submachine guns, on the other hand, has been greatly increased during last 30 or 40 years. Proliferation of international terrorism, drugs trafficking, gang crime and other violent crimes forced many police forces to adopt a variety of submachine guns for special police teams. Compact submachine guns, which appeared during 1960's and 1970's, such as Micro-Uzi or HK MP5k, were quickly adopted by various VIP protection teams that favored compact size combined with massive short-range firepower of such guns. Of cause, the other side of the law also saw benefits of submachine guns; for example, more than few gangsters, outlaws and terrorists used various submachine guns, starting with "Chicago typewriter" (Thompson submachine gun) and up to Czechoslovak Scorpion or Croatian Agram 2000.

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu293/off_topic/Hitman.jpg

Ok, Ace, by now you should have the basics of infantry tactics down, in the above scenarios you did not come face to face with any serious threat such as snipers or MGs, i'll get to that when i feel your ready. We will also start looking at more advanced tactics and equipment. Gotta go, Ace, got a rendez-vous with my dietician.

Guide starts at very first post...

Get a bigger monitor. The images look fine to me.

Same here, I cannot see the full pics, and as the scroll bar is at the bottom of the post (not the pic), I have to scroll down, scroll right, and scroll up again, to see the right part of the pic (and vice versa for the next pic).

I cannot convince my boss to get me a new monitor for 'unofficial' work. Besides, a bigger monitor would not fit into my workplace.

This is some wicked shit! My hat would be off to Off_Topic, if I had a hat.

Some day could you do the same for HAM tactics? Very Happy

Thanks, yeah sure, i could do it with "Fidel" for the craic! Or maybe Ivan?

I plan on covering most scenarios in 1.13, then i can get to the nitty gritty, personally i'm looking forward to "Mickey O'Brien's" class on dangerous wildlife...

That is annoying, obviously i would prefer if people could just view it in one screen, i based it on what i can see.

What resolution do you have the monitor set to lads? I have it set at 1280x1024, maybe i should have reduced the Res while i was doing this.

That would make me smile very very much. Smile After all, most of the HAM combat testing was done with Ivan. See signature text below.

(EDIT: Though, quite frankly, making a HAM tutorial with fewer than a full squad (or three) would be kind of pointless. HAM Solo = Ritual Suicide )

Click on an empty space above or below the picture (or on text, works fine too). Drag your cursor to the left or right edges of the screen to scroll the entire post sideways. This way you don't actually need to reach the scrollbar.

I'd do it the same as above, with a squad bit "Ivan" doing the talking, i'd say it'd be a bit of fun.

What i'll do is create a down loadable version. It's too much hassle now to resize every screen shot. If you increase your Res, does that not help?

I had the same thought this afternoon! I was gonna drag your stuff into OpenOffice, reformat and spit out a PDF. I wasn't sure how the graphics would look if printed should anyone want a hardcopy though.

Nice Guide. Humour always helps hammer home the points!

"Bull, Devin, and Mickey are the only Irish characters IIRC. Bull is the only one that half sounds Irish, the other two have a very "Top o' da mornin' ta ya" type accent."

Add Madlab, though it's the Eirse accent equivolent of Dick Van Dyke's Cockerney Chimaney Sweepe.

Bull: I'd always thought that was second gen Irish American Boston type thing going on.

I met folks in Blackrock & out in the posh big-house sticks who sounded more like Sidney apart from the particular Irish way round they said things and the occasional word Brits don't use like press instead of cupboard. You should record some genuine Irish accents for the JA community!

You're right, none of them sound like anyone i know, from any part of Ireland. It suits the game though, Mickey is a great "character".

He reminds me of a character in a joke i once heard...careful, it's long winded and cheesy...

Three brothers running a farm in Clare decide to increase their herd, two of the brothers go to cork and after a while they find a prize bull. The only problem is they have to spend pretty much all their money on buying and getting it back home. They can't even afford to get the train themselves so they put the bull on alone with the idea that the other brother would collect it.

With only 50 cent lefft they couldn't afford a phone call so they decide to send a telegram, when they get to the post office the clerk informs them it costs 50 cent per word. "Right" says one of the brothers "Put down "comfortable".

The clerk confused types it out and then asks what the message is about, the brothers explain their predicament and the clerk starts to laugh. "How on earth is your brother supposed to get all that from one word?"

"Ah, you see when he reads dat it will sound like dis: Cum-fer-da-bull."

I warned you.

Yer PDF looks alright. I printed it off (in B&W) on the office printer and the graphics are okay, unfortunately in B&W your colour diagrams don't read well. Looks decent on screen though.

I could host it at Ja2guides too if needed. Might have to do some minor changes in format but shouldn't be too tricky or time consuming. It would be a protected page so no one but you could change it. Just say the word.

Lol, sorry didn't mean to be patronising, you know what i meant by help.

I was thinking a drunk Mickey for Bloodcats, someone thats afraid of insects for the Crepitus.

Haven't thought as far as Deidranna. I probably won't do specific guides, i don't want to have spoilers, just give general tips and let people apply them as they see fit.

EDIT: Thanks to Cagemonkey i have a front cover for the PDF!

Sure, I thought more along the lines of having it like the rest of the guides there, in a web format. Could do both, or just the pdf, your call. The good thing about having it online is that you can change it whenever you want without releasing a new pdf.
