Hi all,
I remember having great fun playing JA2 on windows back in my high school days, and I'd really like to get it running on my macbook now.

Ideally I'd like to get the latest version (0.11?) with 800x600 mod up and running. I do know generally how to bring a terminal up and use a command line, but I don't have strong grasp of system variables ($something?) and how they work on OS X.

Can anyone give me directions on what files I need and how to install them? Thank you!

Regards,
Pete

I don't have bootcamp/windows set up at the moment, but for JA2 it's worth considering!

I really would like to have it running natively on OS X though, save me from having to reboot. Is it very complicated?

Alas, I use my mac for everything - including work. That's a good point though, maybe I shouldn't "infect" my work comp with JA.. I am a sucker for games after all.

I managed to get hold of the Linux version of JA2. I will make a brave attempt to follow the FAQ steps, and report back... Smile

Building JA2 is quite simple, because it only has very few dependencies. You only need the source code (either from http://tron.homeunix.org/ja2/ or via SVN), SDL and a C/C++ compiler (probably GCC). After getting the source you copy config.template to config.default, edit the latter file and set the options you need/want. Then build the whole thing (either type "make" or "gmake").

Hi Tron,
Thanks for logging on here and replying to my post. I'm currently downloading XCode Tools so I can install GCC on my mac (who knows why it didn't come with it installed in the first place!)

I've unpacked all the game data, hopefully into the right places. I have unpacked the source into the game directory, and edited the config.default file. I'll see how the rest goes..

I need more information. What readme are you talking about? Where is what (source code, SDL, etc.)?
You have to set the SDL_CONFIG variable (in config.default) to where sdl-config is.

I was talking about the SDL-dev readme.

Woohoo, I've got it working! I had to compile SDL from the source code and make install. Strangely, the JA2 executable can't seem to create a ja2.ini file. I've had to place the data files into default path (Contents/Resources/... etc).

This is what I get whenever I run JA2:

WARNING: Could not open configuration file ("/Users/pete/.ja2/ja2.ini").

.ja2/ exists in my home directory, it doesn't contain ja2.ini. It just contains:

Right, the automagic determines the data directory from the path of the bundle for OS X. You can create a file ~/.ja2/ja2.ini and write a line "data_dir = $SOME_PATH", if you want to override this.

I see no reason for it to run slow and I have not experienced this problem. Can you describe this further? What are the exact symptoms?

I believe the answer is in the message. I know nothing of Mac OS X but it looks like you compiled SDL to use the wrong video driver. You probably get a lot of emulation, conversion in the rendering process. I think SDL defaults to Quartz now, you may have downloaded an old version. Get the latest 1.2 stable source (or libraries and headers) at http://ww.libsdl.org/. A lot of people use SDL on Mac OS X and you shouldn't have any problem to install or compile it.

Hi, thanks helping me out.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I used the latest version of SDL from the main SDL download page. I'll double check this. Cheers!

OK, I just checked and the version of SDL I compiled and installed on my mac is 1.2.13 (the latest version).

Can any other mac users confirm the above error message on OS X 10.5.7 Leopard?

Shucks, I got this far but it doesn't run at playable speeds Sad

Why did you build SDL by yourself? Does the development library from the official SDL site (http://www.libsdl.org/download-1.2.php at the bottom of the page) not work?

There's a "src/video/quartz/" folder in my SDL 1.2.13 source tree.
According to the "configure.in" file in SDL's package, Quartz is enabled by default if the Cocoa development files are installed (the script tries to find a "Cocoa/Cocoa.h" file somewhere).
They may be missing on your computer.

You can see if Cocoa/Quartz are enabled when you run SDL's "configure" script: look for the line
"Checking for Cocoa framework ... yes/no".
If the answer is "no", Cocoa is not installed and Quartz won't be enabled.
Install it (it should be on one of Apple's CDs according to what I saw with Google), run SDL's "configure" script again and compile it.

As far as I can tell, the SDL dev lib for OS X just contains SDLMain files, some templates and documentation. There's no installation routine, no sdl-config to speak of... that's why installed from source. Did I do something wrong there?

I ran "configure" and Cocoa framework IS installed.

I quickly looked at the files in the "src/video/quartz" folder in SDL's package and found references to NSQuickDraw functions. I found more of them if the windowed code than in the fullscreen one, but it might be that I missed some. The Quartz port must be only partial, and it will probably never be improved in SDL 1.2 since it's updated only for bug fixes and SDL people focus on 1.3 now.

So you can't expect something better from SDL. I think I read (on SDL's FAQ) that the windowed mode on Mac OS X takes twice as many passes (and time) than on any other OS. But I don't believe it can explain such a slowdown on the 640x480 screen that stracciatella uses. They say it's not slower than other OSes in fullscreen.

Regardless of SDL, I can have a major slowdown of stracciatella when the executable is built with the JA2TESTVERSION and/or JA2BETAVERSION and/or JA2EDITOR options enabled in the "config.default" file.

Thanks mgl, I didn't know I could run Straccitella in fullscreen mode! That has fixed the slowdown issue now. This is fantastic, I couldn't thank you more Smile

To any other noobs who want to play JA2 Straccitella on their mac: please make sure you enable the -fullscreen command line option! Windowed mode runs veeeeery slowly.

Thanks to everyone who helped me, and thanks Tron for porting this wonderful game.

Its not that difficult...

In fact, for my purposes I think it would've taken longer to get bootcamp/windows/parallels up and running, so it worked out well!

Well, apparently I am a n00b beyond all imaginable extents of n00bage, because I didn't get one word of what is written in this thread Very Happy

A while ago, for Stracciatella 0.8 if I remember correctly, a kind soul by the name of DiscoBoy quickly built and posted a .dmg file containing a precompiled build. It can be found here.

Basically, all a user had to do was download that build, right-click, hit "show package contents" and drag his original datafiles from the JA2 Winders install. Hop! JA2 running natively in OSX in ten seconds.

Quartercast, since you took the time to successfully get 0.11 working (I salute you!), would you be so kind as to share the resulting .app with the general public, AKA me? Very Happy

I believe the JA2 Stracciatella project would gain a lot more following among Mac users if the pre-compiled .app was shared in the project web site, as the Windows binaries are. Maybe you could contact the guys making it to ease this process, hopefully helping a lot of other Mac users apart from myself.

Once again I congratulate you and thank you for your time. My 0.8 build (DiscoBoy's) is good, but crashes now and then, and I was hoping 0.11 or 0.12 would fix at least some of those problems.

Thanks again!

Hi Doolan, I've uploaded the 0.11 Mac OS X executable here.

The 0.11 executable I use is actually the 800x600 modded version posted here.

BTW, have you already got your data and config files set up?

Edit:
You have to run this from your terminal, i.e.

cd to your JA2 base directory, then

./ja2_old -fullscreen

(I've named the uploaded executable "ja2_old" simply because I've got several version in my directory. The one I use is actually "ja2-8x6" from the link above. Additionally, if you don't run Stracciatella in fullscreen mode on your Mac, it will slow down to a crawl.)

noob/noobage are words that do not exist in the maccieverse - you are a regular customer with a regular customer's attitude towards something he pays for - you have to be from redmond if you believe that anyone who neither can fly nor repair aircraft is prohibited from travelling on them

Quartercast, you are a hero of the common man. Bards will forever sing epics about your awesomeness.

Now, if the files in question were added to the Stracciatella project site, I'm sure InsideMacGames would love putting up a story about it to drive the Mac fans in.

I can only hope that by "data" and "config files" you are referring to the stuff I already have from my JA2 Windows install (not 1.13, since that doesn't work with this, right?). I shall test it tomorrow and report.

Logisteric, I thank you for your kind words and agree with you to great extent. Still, a sentient being with Google should at least try, as I did. I then realized I knew way too little on the subject and that bumming an app from our awesome Quartercast here would be more efficient Very Happy

Thanks again guys, you are several levels of amazing overlapped.

What did you pay for? Nothing, exactly. So you are just a regular leech with a regular leech's attitude towards something he didn't pay for. Better keep your incoherent maccie-blather to yourself.

Glad to help anyone who wants to play this excellent port (thanks Tron!) of an excellent game Smile I'm just playing it now on my macbook, getting ready for the final assault on meduna!

I wish the 800x600 mod were updated to 0.12, as you can tell I'm still running 0.11.. Maybe next game I'll play vers 0.12 at 640x480 res, the funkyness of 0.11 does get difficult sometimes.

this only works under intel macs right?

powerbook titanium has a power pc processor I think any chance of ever playing ja on it?
