Am playing with the Demise of Man mod. Amazingly creative, given that this is an adaptation of what's now a really old game. All of you continue to impress me with your creativity.

I had a question though. Just ran across thermal goggles. Could someone tell me how they are different than all the other variants. Also, are they helpful during the day?

Finally, I have noticed that when using the new 1.13 command to toggle between Goggles and sunglasses that it's still possible to accidentally have mercs wearing the wrong thing. Basically, you have to still scan through the whole team to make sure. Would it be possible to just hard code that mercs are smart enough to switch when they need to? Maybe an alert (Razor just put on his night vision goggles.) would be helpful, and you could manually override if you wanted to for some reason.

Thermals show heat as white and anything cooler as shades of grey to black. Great for picking out targets, crap for distancing and differentiation.

Currently NVG's cover the thermal side of things as JA2 cannot simulate that properly (just look at the Thermal Scopes for CoD 6 MW2).

OK....

From a game play perspective, the price would seem to indicate that thermal goggles are much better for picking out targets than NVG IVs, or any of the previous versions. They are considerably more expensive. Descriptions of the thermal goggles don't provide the same clues. (NVG 4 goggle description makes is pretty clear that it's better than 3, for example.)

I'm wondering if maybe the thermal goggles would be less impacted by rain, smoke, and so on.

the speciality of thermal optics in Ja2 is that if you have a heat source like a human (enemy, merc, etc.) the thermal goggles, as opposed to normal goggles, may show these heat sources even if they're behind a wall or door!

(frankly, i looked it up in DoM's items.xml and as we expected the item does use the property in question)

small hint: it doesn't really work with objects IIRc. An enemy behind doors or walls can be seen, an enemy behind a very high object, if i'm not mistaken, isn't seen by these goggles.

If you're using powerful weapons you can, using these goggles, also kill enemies behind certain wall types (by just shooting through the walls) however, this is somewhat tricky as sometimes it seems to work well and sometimes not and it may be difficult to tell in advance whether a particular shot through-wall will do a lot of harm or not at all.

1. download and expand both
2. move the contens of 'data-1.10'-folder to 'data'
3. move the new exe into that big 'update'-folder
4. copy contents of 'update'-folder into a new ja2gold

5. have your german dictonary handy (the link poinzs towards the german forums)

Ha, just found another use for the thermal goggles Rev1 and scorpion, you can see further in heavy rain, can that be? Got shot up by an enemy wearing them and didn't get an interrupt because the dude was *out of my vision range*, awesomeness!! Very Happy Meaning he was able to see me but I was not able to see him.

Essentially the situation was similar to fighting bugs in the caves where the bugs can see my guys from really far away and I can't see them even if I spend all APs running toward them.

So other than seeing enemies through walls the thermal goggles seem to work better (or maybe not be affected at all) in rain? Can someone confirm that?

sounds plausible. Basicy, thermal goggles give you the vision of the crepitus. Now if you ever had a crepitus attack in an above ground mine sector, mabye even at night then it's clear they'll spot you from far away. And i guess it's the same thing happening in Rain. So thermal goggles should probably also help at Night unless callahan has intervened in some way

Funny. It has been so long since I have played that I couldn't even recall this mod. Was reading it because I was trying to figure out if there had been any recent additions. ... Though I'm not sure if I could even find my JA2 CDs if I wanted to play.
