So the gas-grenades go off as well?
Yes, every grenade you carry can go boom when being hit by a grenade yourself. This can cause some funny chain-reaction with stun-, smoke- and TG-grenades going off additionally. I think I had this about 100% times with 60mm (provided you hit a larger group). IIRC, it's rare with 40mm; and I can't recall any incident with this happening when using hand-grenades.

It also happens when stepping on mines. I would guess some 50% to 75% chance here.

Smoke is great if you use it right. In my Vanilla experience, it is great to use it to break LOS, and let enemies continue to try to come to you. Into center of smoke place several hand to hand and throwing specialists. When bad guys get close/enter, have other mercs still out of smoke target them on the edges of smoke, or throw stunners. The mercs inside the smoke have concealment, so will not likely be targeted. When one of those guys gets on you, beat him down, steal his gun. Also, the mercs with knives appear to have zero penalty to hit when throwing a knife out of or into a smoke cloud. Also, use for extracting / covering wounded people, as discussed above.

In regards to filling a room / doorway with smoke, then entering, this is where I find them to be most useful. I cannot recall a time where I set a few guys in the smoke cloud, let the last turn of smoke pass, and then did NOT get initiative on whoever was in the room.

Man, that sucks. I haven't yet got started with the 60mm shells in my present game. I've although discovered stepping on a land mine kind of ruins your day in that chain-explosion sense...

Imagine a grenade explosion followed by: stunners, tnt, carried land mines. various grenades, and followed up by burning the bodies via molotov.

well - i toned that down, as it's sh*t as hell; if grenades where so easy to trigger no army'd use them

anfortunately thre's just a range from 0 to 10 and most nades have a volatility of 1 (just a few have two) - we need better finetuning for that

IRL how often do grenades actually go off when exposed to an explosion?

It's in the code for the gases folks; both mustard and tear have a % chance to eat through gas mask. Put it into practical terms a 100% mask will probably survive intact enough to withstand one m-gas cycle. But if you'd already thrown t-gas at the ugly in question once or twice; chances are his mask is no longer 100% and the m-gas will get through either killing him outright or forcing him to move. This is partly known from using JA2IE & WeEdit; partly from playing far too much 800x600 where almost all enemies have gas masks from very early in the game progress.

Yesterday I probably had the mother of all chain-reactions: Dimitri was throwing a handgrenade on a group of blackshirts. He missed by far and the grenade landed on the body of dead enemy. The explosion neverthless caused something to explode the enemy had dropped. This again caused a realy massive explosion, with smoke and HE grenades going off, at the body of another dead enemy near by. I guess it were 40mm grenades because after the battle I found a seriously damaged 40mm mortar but no grenades for it.

And this explosion finally was able to reach the group Dimitri was targeting, again causing some stuff they were carrying to go off.

So, yes it does happen with handgrenades too.....

I always find them useful to cover my sniper team, I usually get 2 guys... sniper and spotter (CQB protector really) and I lay the sniper way off in the other side of the map.

I carefully place the "protector" in the most dangerous zone and throw a smoke so they cant see any of the guys and if they come closer I usually get the interrupt thing happens.

Other than that IMO is a buggy way if you know how many squares the smokes affects, you place the sniper/shooter in the immediate border area and you can see everything outside the smoke but they rarely see you... shooting from the smoke :/ weird but effective
