Hi,
I cannot get Jagged Alliance 2 work on Windows Seven. The screen goes black for a few seconds before crashing to desktop without a single error message (or at least one that I have been able to find). It does exactly the same with Vanilla JA2 1.12 from GOG.com and with 1.13 from the last single click installer build.

I tried various compatibility setting and the tips given for Vista problems without any success... The game does not work either the Win XP mode (the virtual PC included in 7 Pro, not the compatibility setting).

Does anyone actually got JA2 working on Win 7?

Dunno if anyones actually GOT win7 yet . Eventually Vista was gotten to work (game is 10 yrs old), this might take a little time too I'm afraid for MS to put in fixes , your PC should report back this problem .
I may try tomorrow on my wifes new laptop and win7 and see how it goes . (if she'll let me Very Happy )

I played the JA2 v1.13 I have on the vista laptop of a friend without any trouble... but Seven does not seem to like it :/
If I could at least get some error feedback, I would have a clue. The game really CTD without saying anything.

Where do you have the game installed, i mean what directory? Are there any log files in that directory or its subdirectories, especially Profiles/UserProfile_JA2113? For example game_exceptions.log or vfs_init.log or maybe errors.log.

Indeed, a file named Crash Report_dd_mm_yyyy__hh_mm.txt is created every time I try to launch the game on win seven. However its content is nothing close to interesting:

Quote:
Release v1.13.3111: Build 09.07.15. Z

File:
F:\Jagged Alliance 2\ja2.exe

Just copy past that around 50 times and that's it...

game_exceptions.log just complains about missing files. However these errors are not linked to crashes, as their timestamp show they have been made when I was playing on my other computer (I copy-pasted the game on a thumbdrive since the gog version is fully portable). By the way... SOUNDS\Ceramic Armour Insert.wav is missing Wink

Edit: Found windows JA2 crash log in the event observer administration tool, they do not contain any humanly understandable information.

Have you tried other versions, like the Multiplayer releases. They may have some bugs fixed, that are not yet fixed in the main release branch.

You could also try this version (a special MP version). It is around two months old now, but it does contains debug info and should produce more meaningful error messages (stack_trace.log).

Then there is also the new Mod Manager Release (see MoMa thread). It has "worked" for me on Windows 7, although it was the release candidate in a virtual machine. Don't know how it translates to a real Windows 7 version.

With Win 7 it's important to NOT install it to the default install directory especially if it's x64. You can get away with it but in the long run it's a lot of pain...

Seeing as JA2 actually need zero registry entries just grab the installed version off your Vista Laptop and run that either off a USB Key or any non-protected folder location (Like C:\Games\JA2...)

If that fails, check your video drivers and possibly grab the K-Lite Codec Pack just to eliminate 2 more variables (CCCP works too if you don't like K-Lite).

But so far I have 11 installs on this PC and all work fine right from XP through to Server 08 R2 Wink

PS try doing a clean install, then move the folder and direct the 1.13 SCI to that folder as another way round file protection Wink
PPS Using run as Admin may also help a lot if you have UAC turned on...

I do not install games on my system (C) drive because it is not big enough (SSD Wink ) so I do not think it comes from here. Also I played on the Vista laptop from my thumb drive.

I do not have any codec installed since I use vlc. I do not have codec pack either on my older xp powered computer I play on for now. Does JA2 actually need such codec pack to work?

As I said before, I already tried that.

No joy:
launch game, screen turns black, CTD "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold stopped working"

Edit: I am dling the SVN version of 1.13 to see if it works. if it does not I should at least have better feedback thanks to the debug exe.

Edit2: It seems there is no ja2debug.exe in svn builds any more... Btw not working with svn version either

Haven't you said that the MoMa version works for you?

I tried the svn version on my Windows 7 32-bit Release Candidate virtual machine and it does work (as Administrator and as a restricted user).

Directory [C:\Users\Dad\My Documents] does not exist : 2
Isn't that the error from before? It should not occur anymore.

Where are these files from? From the same directory where the exe file is?
Once the mod manager starts (and it does, right?) then all temporary files are written in an other directory, until the game actually starts. This other directory is, in your case,
C:\Users\Dad\Documents\Ja2_v113\Profiles\DefaultProfile
There should be the correct error files. And since the Mod Manager starts, this directory must exist.

Also, try the updated exe file seven post above (mediafire seems to be down currently). It should be less dependent on fonts and display error messages in a Windows message box (instead in-game).

What did you do once the Mod Manager started? What mods and profiles have you selected? Does it crash when you click the OK button? Do you start the Mod Manager fullscreen or windowed?

No log at all except those from windows that seem totally uninteresting.

Where did you install to on the Prof version? It should be somewhere other than Program Files or you will most likely encounter issues. If you did install it there then try Right Clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator".

Running Windows 7 32 bit, no issues with installing JA2 AT ALL. I hated installing it on Vista, it would only work by transferring program files from a USB drive. And then it stretched everything for widescreen. But I'm currently running Night Ops, Wildfire 5.0, and 1.13 with Possum DBB (I forget which version) as seperate directories, and all of them work fine. EXCEPT for the fact I sometimes get corrupted saved games. Tried running as administrator, helped it boot faster. Weirdest example of game corruption, crashes on one of my saves during time compression, but only on the hour, unless all squads are travelling at the time. Any ideas how to get around this?

The other day I installed JA2 Gold on my W7 laptop with no problems. I have the original JA2 v1.0 but decided to buy JA2 Gold from GoodOldGames.com because I heard W7 is slow to install the original game the old fashion way. Its only $9.95 at GoG.com so I figure a digital download with the latest patches built in would be easier. It was. The plus side is that I also got to support GoG.com by buying from them so a win-win scenario IMO.

Installed gold edition from Cd's in win 7 X64 Proff.
I put it in c:/old.games/Jagged Alliance 2/

Ran it with Compatibility XP, pack 3 and admin rights.

Runs without any glitches. This is vanilla though haven't tried the mods yet.

But if vanilla runs then anything else shouldn't be a problem. Smile

-edit-

Nope, after installing 1.13 it gives SGP.CCP error.

Problem is the fact the folder is read-only but even after several forums I've not been able to remove that....

Hi EXos, There was a post last Friday of someone who figured this out. I should have looked for it, but I make so many posts that it is hard for me to find.

Basically the recommendation was to install the game in a folder other than Program Files as the administrator and to change the folder permissions and all its files so that everyone has full access.

(Mayby Logi knows about the post from last week?)

Think I found the problem. It's the Wildfire mod that gives the sgp.ccp error when you try to run it.
I asume it's because it doesn't work through the .ini system that 1.13 uses.

Is there a topic in the Wildfire thread where I can put this?

The WildFire forum is here.

The JA2v1.13 WildFire6.06 mod runs on JA2 1.13 and you can find it here.

There is also a purchasable WildFire game CD which is a different game experience. For example you cannot run JA2 1.13 WF mod on the purchasable version (in case this is the issue here).

There are a lot of players playing the JA2 1.13 WF mod (including myself) and we had no problems. Unfortunately the only advise (with the available info) I can give you is to do a complete reinstall (following the instructions).

Hey, just wanted to mention that this also works for me on Windows 7.
Installed it on a different drive then C: and no problems what so ever.
I didn't even know there was a problem with running the game on Win7 until reading this post here.
As for the screen I play it windowed using an ATI profile where I automatically let colors change from 32 to 16, profile can be accessed through a shortcut as well, real easy.

Just as a side note and not off topic i hope. I downloaded JA2 Gold initially into windows 7 with no problem. I set up Urban Chaos and played it for a bit, but really missed the features of the 1.13 mod, so i started looking around and found hybrid the UC-1.13 mod. I uninstalled ja2-UC mod so i could have a fresh install to work with. When i reinstalled the just JA2 gold to the same C:/programs/(86x) folder that i had used before, the game booted up with the first screen off of Urban Chaos loaded. Off a fresh install!! The game froze every time i tried to use it and i went and uninstalled it 2 more times, looking for every file on my system ja2 or urban chaos mod, and deleting them. Finally i tried using a different directory C:/strat and it worked perfectly. I have no idea why the only thing that i could think off is that the image file was saved by windows even after install, and or the possibility that the same directory being used was causing it. Either way i hope to be playing UC-1.13 soon, and hope the universe destroys windows 7 out of good cause.

I have no problems either on Windows 7 (32 bit) - I installed JA2 Gold from a CD to C:\Games\JA2\ and added a Single Click Installer (1.13+STOMPHAMAIMNAS!) from the forum on top.

Just to be sure I set the .exe to run with XP-compatibility and as an Administrator.

The A#1 thing to do is to NOT install JA2 into the \Program Files folder. As nollan notes use some other one like \games instead. This will avoid many issues with various protection problems.

BTW, this is not uncommon with many old games that write into their own folders.

On my machive (Windows 7 x64) I had changed the permissions on the JA2 Folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold) and the saves folder is found at "C:\Users\JMich\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\SavedGames". I am not sure how it would change if you run JA2 as an administrator, since I'm not using any compatibility modes for JA2.exe.
The VirtualStore folder is used by Win7 to allow programs that look for files on their current directory bypass the "Run as Administrator" restriction, and also to allow different users to use different profiles.
So, tl;dr version
check the "C:\Users\JMich\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold" folder (substituting JMich for your win7 username) for any leftover data, or use a folder other than the "c:\program files (x86)" for game installation.
