While having an IMP / Fidel packed with stacks of TNT looks badass, I usually forget about the explosives during a battle. They end up (unintentionally) as the mechanism to raise the STR/HLTH stats of my designated explosives-man... So my question for the day:

What are the prime examples of explosive usage in your tactics?

Building traps with remote detonators and remodeling the landscape. Getting rid of high grass and especially rocks if I have to defend a sector a lot and don't want the enemy to have too much cover. Also useful to make backdoors and shorter paths through houses, I mostly use it to prepare my defense. BAnd then there's the odd enemy hiding behind a door who'll always get an interrupt so I just blast the wall. Later in game, explosives also come in handy against tanks.

But take a look in the archives, I'm pretty sure that topic was already covered there.

There is nothing more satisfying than being able to sneak up on a tank during the day and blow it up with some explosives! Oh wait, blowing up enemies is also very satisfying, he, he, he... Smile

I use it only for breaching and i use it alot for that often the door entrance is the most dangerous place in the whole map just cause there is always some dude waiting beside it and will interrupt anyone going in, having them cower in fear just in the entrance when they get shoot.

So i set up the explosive stack up in a safe distance blow it and storm the building the results are always a good tactical win.

Oh and for places where you expect a counter-attack where you will need to defend it with your MERCs if you have a lot of TNT and remote detonators you can set up lines of defense like 3 tnts evenly spread out in a line all set to explode on button 1. And another line and so on.

The only problem I see with blowing your way into a building / position is that it leaves a permanent breach which needs to be plugged by your team afterwards...

I have recently made good use of mines in a defensive position in the Cambria University sector to plug a hole / make an early warning system. The "Kaboom" sound is satisfying Smile

Well the permanent breach is just something you have to live with in war Very Happy

Otherwise you could try to spare some buildings that you keep as fortresses. Oh btw are there any proximity detonators that turns any explosives into mines?

Normally i C4 the buildings at the SAM sites cause i often cut the fence behind them and then blow my way in making a defensive position inside etc. the only thing i kind off miss is that i cant blow up the roof or so, i mean if i hear movement coming from above its quite safe to assume its not a civilian running around on the roof.

You can also plug up those permanent breaches with with flagged mines if you don't want someone accidentally stepping on them in the future because you forgot about them. Very cheap and effective permanent plug solution. Just make sure the guy laying and detecting the mine is good.

Thanks Watchman, Now someone will ask me why Barry can't find his own mines, ha, ha, ha... Very Happy

But in all seriousness Watchman is correct, holes in fences can be "repaired" by putting a mine in the tile and then detecting them again which places a blue flag, which in turn enemies can't disarm or cross.

Technically it is sufficient to just place a mine, this is because most (but not all) enemies will detect the mine and not walk over it. However some enemies (and most of your militia) won't see the mine and make an even bigger hole in the fence (well, by stepping on it abd blowing themselves up).

Sidenote: By the way, since you "touched" the mine last, your militia will quite quickly turn against you if one of them steps on it, which is epic fail on Ironman. Smile

So just in case someone is wondering why they can't find mines they set themselves, the detection code is a little on the "strange" (possibly buggy) side. For example I set a mine with Barry, but he wasn't able to detect it afterward. However when I had Flo walk up to it (abyssmal EXP stat), she was able to detect it. So just keep trying with other mercs.

Mine detection depends on the level and explosives skill of the 'detector' compared to the same values of the 'minelayer'. So it is easy to find mines laid by an amateur, and it is hard to find mines laid by a level 8 guy with EXP=90.

The key to finding one's own mines is saving and loading.
Lay the mines, hit ALT-S, wait a few seconds, hit ALT-L, then walk along your freshly laid mines.
Works for me every time.

You don't say. That is pretty cool, just goes to show you that those guys put a LOT of detail into this game.

My favorite use of TNT is done very early on in the game.

Hire Barry or Fidel so they come with one explosive charge. Hire Ira in the A10 basement and loot the crates as soon as your squad appears upstairs again. usually there is one pack of TNT there. Give it to Ira along with the charge carried by your hired Explosives expert.

Go back downstairs and drop the TNT that you just looted in the ONE SQUARE between Miguel and Carlos by the table and then have Ira then try to set the detonator on the other charge she is carrying right on top of it. Since she has crappy Explosives skill of 2, they both explode and kill every last one of those crappy rebels and Ira along with them.

Pick up the AK, Mini-14, and all of the other gear laying there on the ground and you can now take Drassen easier than a hot drunken chic can get laid at a frat party.

I kill the rebels because by the time you CAN hire them and use them they are useless in comparison to the enemies that you are facing. There aren't any more than just glorified mules if you do use the hire early patch and at least Dimitri's "I forget. I forget again." in the middle of a crucial run for cover doesn't stop up a doorway and get your butt shot off.

Using TNT on Kingpin is a great thing to do right after you come out of the San Mona Mine with his stash. Yes, Angel, Maria, and Kyle bite the dust after I get what I need out of them too.

There isn't a character that i haven't shot, knifed, or beat to death with my fists in this game. Including, Crows, Cows, and kids. That is how I first got started with the Original JA MOD Squad before we even had a name and Deidranna Lives was but gleam in our sick, twisted, eyes.

In my games,
Man power is absolutely crucial. Constant counter attacks occur. The rebels tend to have okay statistics, and when combined with constant battles, they become killers. Also, Dimitri is an awesome grenadier. Ira is a awesome teacher/medic. Carlos is a cheap/FREE auto weapons guy. Miguel is a decent physical specimen.

but,

That is what makes this game so great, every player can play his/her own way. In my opinion, Jagged Alliance 2 + all of the user modifications = Greatest game of all time.

The murdering of the rebels also sets up me being able to wax that drunk, Father Walker! I leave someone to start training militia in the mine first so that I can toast that clown that replaces Pablo at the Airport so he can short change my shipments too.

Tell me that you at least Kill Doreen in the sweat shop full of Child Labor. "Hey it was that or a box of Midol and I don't see a pharmacy around here."

Ride what shit?

My favorite lines in all of the games are the ones that I wrote and recorded for the Rude Dude. If you have someone less than 25 leadership try to recruit him you'll pee yourself dry. Wink

The place where I almost always use explosives is the Meduna Blood Cat Arena. I blow a hole into the southeastern thin wall and wait for the soldiers (and kitties) to come out - automatic weapons and grenades at the ready. With a bit of luck the explosion even takes care of some enemies patrolling the walkway on the inside.

I use it for ambushes, very useful if you are defending a sector and you know which direction an attack if coming from, a few sticks of TNT with remote detonators on varying channels in chokepoints can make a world of difference. Just remember to make a note of which channel sets off which explosive, I've had... some incidents in the past with this.

Also, you don't have to use TNT by itself, use it as a cheap detonator for other things. I like to stick a 60mm Mustard Gas shell or two in a bag and stick that on top of the primed TNT, that way you get some area denial in effect once you've blown it and the effective damage you can do is extended.

Also, I use it for it's intended purpose sometimes too; demolition and restructuring the landscape. Having problems with a narrow doorway? Make you're own doorway in the wall next to it.

Also, another thing when defending, I like to blow out and clear away debris to make OPs for my guys. Blow a wall, and sit a marksman or a gunner in the back of the room, that way he's got plenty of cover to run too if things get heavy, and whilst it confines their field of fire, it also prevents them taking fire on the flanks.

But how do you blow up rocks? I tried that in one of the rocky areas (Cambria SAM IIRC) and none of the rocks or trees would so much as budge when I detonated TNT next to them.

I wanted to share my favourite TNT story.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j382/WDS_NCS/JA2RenegadeRepublic1.jpg

Playing RR, my sector was invaded by ~22 elites. I only had two support mercs in the sector, my IMP and Dmitri, who weren't fully rested or very well equipped (I don't know if you can tell, but I think both my IMP and Dmitri used their starting weapons). What they did have were tons of explosives.

We found a house with only one door. We started in the front room, firing out the front windows, and gradually fell back to the short SW-NE hallway and then to the bathroom, using TNT to wipe out several who bunched up outside the door. The second major explosion was to kill a few elites running along the wall and to open up a firing angle out the bathroom door to shoot a few more.

Both mercs made it out alive, though a little worse for wear, having eliminated all opposition. I estimate that the TNT managed to kill or seriously wound 8 opponents...

(...As well as two hapless civilians whose house we commandeered. That might be a kid near the door. The other survived long enough to run out past the pickup truck before bleeding out...)

...With a further 10 killed in and around the house. It was pretty sweet and one of the more intense battles I've fought in the game.

Hi,

I use TNT to take out SAM-sites without urging the queen to send reinforcements. This saves a lot of maintainance for free air-space. You can maneuver with the heli and para-drops although the SAM-site remains in enemy hands. To achieve this situation it is crucial to humiliate the garrison by not killing any soldier.

At night I gather a team of three with all TNT I have got, camo, tranquillizers and for emergency some sniper-rifles and stun-grenades. Another merc may watch a the edge of the map and retreats when the shit hits the fan to trigger the parlay for the three to save them in Alma. The first strike destroys the outer wall and all mercs retreat. After rest the next strike destroys the radar. It is possible to destroy it from behind a wall, so it takes some experience to place the TNT properly. If this strike fails, there is still a chance to use an LAW from far. Boom, free air-space forever. Lynx and Stephen have a good balance of explosives skill, night time performance and marksmanship for a decent price. They are mostly the ones to "go in".

Another hint. Never forget the wire-cutters!
