I'm trying to create a weapon with a 1-shot 1-kill chance like the throw knife. I thought maybe it is enough to make the weapon very silent and catch the enemy unaware, but evidently its not enough.

So, how can I make a weapon that has a chance for a 1-shot 1-kill roll but does not have uber-high damage by default?

What about the VSS Vintorez or it's less effective siblings?

There's always the VSK too. If someone doesn't die from a silenced 12.7mm round to the head it must be a terminator...

How about making a throwing knife with a very long range? Like a poisoned throwing dart, along those lines.

Look at UB's Hand Mortar. The projectile can been used over & over again. Not a great deal of work to turn that into crossbow plus bolts. Reduce sound to diddlysquat, swap your graphics, alter stats like weight, damage etc, play around with it. Alternatively copy the t-knife but turn it into ammo/normal rather than weapon/throw but not sure how easy it would be to then get the bow to accept the bolt without coming up with whole new weapon type & ammo type.

Uh, sexy pic, me likes!! (some parts of the gun look a little blurry, you need to hand pixel it a little)

So you need a one shot kill gun, hmmm...


I made a Warhammer 40,000 gun for Kaerar a while ago, it was a needler of some sort, I simply used the dart ammo type for the gun. Since the gun was burst-able, it worked pretty well, enemies fall unconscious after 3-5 hits.

You could make a new ammo type in AmmoTypes.xml and use multiple bullets to knock the enemy out with one "shot", maybe something like this:

Then you need to add a magzine with the same amount of crossbow bolts as the gun has in Magazines.xml, and of course you need your Items.xml and Weapons.xml entries.

Thanks Dieter, but I'm working with vanilla JA2 and w4st's weapon editor with Batman's GUI editor. There are no xml files to work with.

Ah that gives me a frame of reference Wink

Well I would probably mod one of the rifles to have an integral silencer and up the damage if ya like. Using excel and the CSV table works well. Just look at the other weapon profiles and you'll see the patterns. Not sure if you could edit the sound report though. Maybe an alteration to the dart gun...

Ah but only t-knife and UB Hand Mortar have that re-usable thing going on. I'd seriously open ub in the same weapon editor and copy the HM plus it's ammo then mod those into crossbow plus bolts.

I dont mind if the bolts arn't reusable. In keeping close to the source, the Half-Life crossbow bolts are lost once shot.

What I'm looking to recreate with this weapon is the same effect as the throw-knife when it can kill in one throw if used on an unsuspecting enemy. A throw knife damage is only 15, but can kill an enemy instantly. I thought all silenced weapons have the same effect but not so. Rifles only make a 1-hit kill on unaware foes if they have high base damage, plus ammo mod.

Getting a weapon to behave like a throw-knife damage-wise works differently, I guess.

The game has special code to deal with the lethal stealth attack with a throwing knife.
I am talking about stracciatella/vanilla code, I don't know 1.13.

I don't remember in which source file it is, but if you are able to read and write code, you should search for the text "stealth attack", probably in the 'Build/Tactical/' folder, and try to add your weapon there.

Whoah, way beyond my ability. I can only use Batman's utility to edit txt files extracted with W4st's editor. I thought maybe the stealth value could be edited through there, but if it needs coding then I can't do it. Oh well.

The good news is that the only condition on the weapon itself is that it uses the ammo type "AMMO_KNIFE", not that it is a throwing knife or bloody throwing knife.

There's no "throw knife" value in the MyWeapons text, so I tried setting the weapon's ammo USE ATTACK TYPE as throw knife. Didn't work.

Since the only way is through code, where can I find some resources on reading JA2 Gold code and editing it? I'll have a look and see if I have time to learn how to do that.

Only thing I can use. Whatever works, you know?

I know everyone and their mother has moved to working with 1.13 since the source code was released, but I guess I'm too much of a traditionalist. Also, change is scary and confusing, and I got enough on my mind as it is.

I like that "old" weapon editor. I made the fully functioning flamer in MFM with it so it can't be all that bad.

But none of this is helping with Tyco's quest for crossbow.

Just point me in the direction of a hex-editing tutorial or some such and I'll take it from there.

In fact, I didn't saw that crossbow! is it a normal weapon?

I thought in something less obvious! I thought it should be created by the mercs! It could result from the merg of a steel bar with a SKS and a string! and the ammo something resulting from the killing of a crow and bamboos cutted form the swamps. What do you feal about this?

What do you feal about this?

I think that destroys a perfectly fine SKS while producing a chunk of scrap metal that has a 40% chance to just fall apart and a 80% chance to injure its user.

Aside from that, I don't know if it's possible (i.e. doesn't require to much effort) to make crows drop something useful or cut bamboo in the swamps.

This is hard Talk. In most of the games, we leave finaly the SKS rifle to be sold! It becomes "obsolete". The weapon Crossbow with the specs you are talking is in fact a bad solution. I was expecting for something more medernly accurate and reliable. But, if that your experiance, that's an obvious observation!

Please, consider the stats of a modern crossbow! Also, it is 100% silent, which is interesting.
So can it be done? and how?

A modern crossbow isn't 100% silent. Have you fired one? Anyone within at least 20-30 feet can hear the twang when you fire it.
