Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
It has something for everyone.
Red Cliff easily became one of my favorites.
It sucked me in and made me forget about the world I live in.
The film was based on Records of The Three Kingdoms, which also was the basis for one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature: Romance of the Three Kingdoms .

MAKE SURE YOU GET THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION.

Also,

Before watching Red Cliff
Read:
The [color:#FFFFFF]Art of [color:#CC0000]War
[color:#999900]Sun Tzu

It does not take a long time to read through.
You can find the Lionel Giles version for free on the internet. I literally made a cover page, printed it off, and made my own book.

Ha! So that's why the italian release is translated as "The battle of the three kingdoms". For a sec I thought it was another lame re-titling from our side (we had so many that now is a running gag).

I should have TAOW in pdf somewhere. Sure I know a lot of quotes, can't remember if and when I read it.

About the international version: it seems that it's the only one outside China, and when I rent, I rent in DVD, so it have good chances of being the long cut. Only problems are:
1) if Blockbuster have it.
2) if they have both! (or the double-DVD feature).

I leave you this South Korean pearl: Silmido.

I did not know if you wanted the Italian version or not but here it is.

Red Cliff - La Battaglia Dei Tre Regni

It seems to be the long cut. 276 minutes
The US International version is 288 minutes.

I don't know if it's been posted (I wouldn't be surpised) but the Search-function is seriously broken. Anyways, I saw this Stanley Kubrick-gem for the first time last weeekend:

http://supak.com/store/videos/images/dr-strangelove.jpg

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

This is truly a masterpiece in all aspects (screenplay, directing, acting etc.) and downright hilarious. It's comedy at its blackest and therefore quite subtle. Peter Sellers is nothing short of awesome, doing no less than three characters: a stereotypical British RAF-officer, the president of U.S. and last but not least Dr Strangelove himself (who brings down a laugh or two from the supporting cast which can be seen if you look closely).

The plot revolves around a pending nuclear annihilation and the political and logistical troubles to stop it. Funny and intelligent while suspenseful.

"Gentlemen! You can not fight here - this is a war room!"

RED CLIFF
Part I & PART II
DESTINY LIES IN THE WIND

(ORIGINAL INTERNATIONAL VERSION)

Simply amazing in every aspect. 280 minutes of pure brilliance. Nothing is left out. If you see one movie, make it this one.
I have seen it and didn't realy get it: to long, to pathetical, typical Asian robot-like acting - and I wouldn't even comment on the combat scences (I mean you couldn't do worse than in Gladiator, but this is 2011 and not the 1960s, so a bit more realism would had helped).

Really?

Asian robot-like acting?
What did you not get? There is a lot of stuff that is unsaid in this movie. If you study Chinese philosophy you will see the light.

Also, I did not get what you meant about the battle scenes.

The actors in those movies often only show very little emotions (compared to actors in western movies), in return those movies work with a lot of symbolism and (to me) look a bit overloaded with it. I had expected John Woo to make it more Hollywood like in that aspect, but apperantly it rather was made for the Asian audience than that of the US or Europe.

Single superheros who attack the entire enemy army on their own with their Kung Fu, and get away without a scratch? Battles won by turning around shields to blind the enemy? Fancy formations ballets and stuff like that? That's more 1970s style or that of cheap martial arts movies. In this movie I had expected a bit more realism. But I have to admitt that also Hollywood often miserably fails when trying to show pre-gunpowder combat. From the latest of that kind only Troy, even though otherwise being a rather crap movie too, has some scences that come close to it.

I don't know what you saw, but I saw a lot of emotion in that movie. The difference today is everything is so fucking dramatized. Hell even men act like teenage girl's in crisis because "Oh MY God!, my favorite hair brush is not where I left it!"
How the hell is a commander or general, supposed to act in a war? Calm...cool...Aggressive...hot...I saw both in this movie.

On a side note.
Americans and Europeans have become weak and overly dramatized. They have become lax in there day to day living. The Chinese want our standard of living and they are willing to put in 70 hour weeks, every week, for nearly nothing.

By the way every movie is philosophy.

I did not see kung fu in this movie.
This is a romanticized version of stories of legendary Chinese warriors.
I don't get how you complain about it not being "Hollywood enough" and when it does get "Hollywood" you complain about that.

You seem like a direct to the point forward kind of fellow. I bet you fight with pure anger and aggression. Preferring direct attacks and wanting the battle over as soon as possible.

It is a cultural thing and not a result of bad acting. And also not related to being week or tough. Westerners have a different attitude to how and when show what kind of emotions, and also a different approach to display emotions in a movie.

No reason to take it personal when I critize a romanticized display of legendary figures/action as certainly a-historical and rather unrealistical.

Knowing the philosophy of that time is important to understanding human behavior of that time and place. It gives us more insight in understanding a film of a particular time piece. It is not mandatory that anyone do "research" before watching a movie. That is why we like things we know about and do things we are good at.

I do not believe it was labeled as a pure history movie. It was based on actual historical texts, unlike many other works of the same events and thus is more historically accurate.

DISCIPLES OF THE 36th CHAMBER

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519IzNr5eUL.jpg

I can honestly say that out of all of the Shaw Brother's movies, this was the most disappointing. This is the third movie to carry not only the 36 chamber title, but also to star Gordon Liu. I had high expectations coming into this one. Gordon Liu was supposedly reenacting his role as San Te, unlike in Return to The 36th Chamber.

There are some good points. Action is good.

The story....I just didn't get it.????

I recommend this to fans of: The Shaw Brothers, Gordon Liu, or The 36th Chamber.
Any one else be sure to skip this one.

I don't know what it was labled officially. I recently watched it on pay-TV and I had the impression it was advertized as a history movie. I am not saying it's the worst movie ever, or something like that. But I personally was rather disappointed. But well, there is no arguing about "like and dislike".

But if you are in for some realy fine hero crap I would like to direct your attention to English military history: they are so in in the "few vs. many/thin red line" tales that they don't have any problems with outright forging official documents.

Yes, in general it gives a fairly well account on the general situation in northern Africa prior to WWI. Overall it's a nice adventure movie not be taken to serious with excellent actors, good pictures and the right music. I realy like it.

A more serious movie, and probably the best war movie I have ever seen:

One thing, if one want to be successful in whatever they are doing, then first, they must be very good in whatever they are doing. And you do not need a "school" to teach you that, look at all the great hackers, they forces themselves to be very good at what do, no outside forces can do such thing.

A good one indeed. But, you must ask like this, which brand of martial art is better, because there are thousand of brands. The jap learn most of their MA from CN, but they do did a good job to simplify it.
