I really believe, based on his work and merits, that he is being ironic in the first quote that you posted. He is pro affirmative action and a self designated Marxist.

What does his criticism of a current president's plan of action in relation to the ideas of former presidents and their interpretations have to do with him being ironic?

Many of the trends, problems and disasters of our time are a legacy of that era. We can only imagine how many future generations will be paying the price

Okay,

It seems the quote you posted was a context of one of his favorite quotations:

Civilization is not inherited; it has to be learned and earned by each generation anew; if the transmission should be interrupted for one century, civilization would die, and we should be savages again.

The increased concentration among banks seems to have the effect of making financial crises less likely, but when they happen they are more global in scale and hit us very hard. We have moved from a diversified ecology of small banks, with varied lending policies, to a more homogeneous framework of firms that all resemble one another. True, we now have fewer failures, but when they occur

No, I am tied to the world because of some decisions I made in the past. At this point in my life I have been pushed into the public eye and am a steady figure in my community. I realized that people are doing the best that they can from their level of awareness.
