Gumpy and Flo were overrun in the mine sector of Alma which they were not prepared to defend. There were only 10 green-shirt Militia defending against 16 mixed black-shirt and red-shirt soldiers. Gumpy and Flo beat a hasty retreat to the outhouse at the north of the map. I should have retreated them off the map, but I said to hell with it -- I am sick and tired of retreating, I'll have these two kill the enemies one at a time as they enter the outhouse.

As Gumpy and Flo were primarily militia-trainers, they were not well armed... Flo had a .45 Thompon SMG and Gumpy had an FA-MAS.

They were only level 2.... not really experienced enough to get the first shot (interrupts). I really shouldn't have made them make a last-stand like that, but I just felt like it.

The first round of contact, they killed a single redshirt, and they had to use up all their APs to do so.

The second round, an elite barged into the outhouse and killed Flo immediately with full-auto 7.62mm fire. She died right in front of the toilet.

The third round, Gumpy sprayed at the elite with full-auto fire and only hit him once... way to go, Gumpy! The elite offered him the option to Surrender and I knew that Gumpy had no other choice.

Gumpy was taken to the jail in N7 and interrogated. Joe really kicked the crap out of him. Even Elliot took a little swipe at poor Gumpy, for 2 damage points.

Gumpy never made it past the first guard. He threw the throwing knife at the guard's head and hit him for 9 points of damage. Gumpy then retreated around a corner and waited for the guard to follow.

The next round Gumpy punched the guard twice, for 8 and 4 points of damage... the guard fired a full-auto MAC10 burst into Gumpy and he fell to the ground and bled to death.

(I think that's the first time I had a MERC who could not escape from the prison... Gumpy was just too weak and low-level to make it out!)

Good riddance to Gumpy anyway, I didn't feel like listening to his crap this campaign.

JA2 is magic. This kind of story often happens to me in my campaigns and i really like to try to defend a sector with low-experienced mercs who are outnumbered... This reminds me of one time where I was defending Drassen SAM site with only Ira armed with a Glock 17 and some green militias, I managed to kill them all and Ira gained 3 marksmanship points and 1 level during the battle... She ended up badly wounded though Razz

I had a game with a well trained Gumpy that I imported into the Bearpit campaign. He ended up at level 10 with 100 marksmanship, and 100 agility. I haven't used him since.

Yeah, I get 'a kick' out of seeing a low-level merc having gained +20 on a stat.

Is that normal...?

Absolutely normal, IMO.. Though, beating the cr** out of the Humvee is really a cheeseball, so i stopped doing that. Also stopped 'waltzing' my mercs in front of that window in Tixa (for agility boost) and, instead, i focused on jumping on baddies from behind and beat the living daylight out of them for stats boost.Tank-bashing is also a no-no. I really enjoy the 8000+ 'mod' because with all those thousands of baddies you can train almost every single merc in A.I.M in the very same campain. I also keep 'salivating in anticipation' when analyzing my 'personnel' sheet on the laptop.Seeing how many stat improvements gained say, Hamous, fills me with some kind of joy.
Chazz.

i have an similar story, but with a happy end.
i had biff and flo in the north east Anti Air base training the militia when suddenly a group of blackshirts entered the sector. Unfortunately Numb and Buzz left the sector only a few hour ago towards cambria.

anyway biff and flo had 10 green militia with them and i barricaded them in the rocket control building. biff with 62 marksmanship killed 3 sexy blackshirts girlies. the rest of them were killed by the milita who obviously behave better when you play the battle yourself. (i saved before the battle started and used the autosolve option and of course i was defeated)

I got Razor, Ira and Gasket to surrender and they ended up in the prison. During their escape, I gave Razor a knife and when I opened the door, I charged at the guard. Razor gets killed and Ira tries to do some damage. She goes down and Gasket eventually kills the guard. Unfortunately, the only way to heal Ira is Gasket, and he has no medical skill. So its Gasket versus the rest of the sector. Basically, he got owned and never left the prison building.

I don't start a game without Razor when he is a level 5 or more he is a killing machine, I have never seen any other merc kill like he does, his psycho bonus must really help. The prison I have never had a merc at maybe I should try it once, but my hit and run tactics are very good. I was trained using them in real life about ten years ago, and they really work in this game also.

I can't believe that you guys let your mercs surrender... If your mercs die in Tixa prison it your fault...

I gave Flo away to the Hicks and then single-handedly killed them all with Magic. I thought maybe Flo will notice that there are no more Hicks left but she just said "I can't believe you guys did this to me!". I said "F*** you, b****! Hit me!", blew her head off with a SPAS-15 and walked away. On the MERC homepage it still says Flo has married, doesn't say anything about a gruesome death.

I surrender because it had been a long time since I had the chance to do that and I find it entertaining.

Wow, someday I'll have to try really heavily training a MERC guy. I've never tried that yet in any of my games. Do you think it's possible to create SUPER FLO OF DEATH?

Yes FLO has high wisdom. She is actually easy to make a killing machine only issue is she is a coward. So despite becoming a good merc is always making those cowardly comments.

Flo can be turned around and she does end up a good merc I found..

Razor well the better he gets the scarrier he gets. Had him wade into 4 red shirts once and they barely had a chance....the scrubs around great but if you put the time in they will be very useful..plus you get access to their better peers

That is still true in 1.13, but a bit harder if you play on 'experienced' and almost impossible if you play on 'insane' difficulty.

I always enjoy it more when a team of substandard mercs are able to achieve. The pros are expected to, the below par mercs are always a surprise and their improvement is a reward.

I tried it intentionally once. Had Razor and Haywire (is that his name) walk around a sector alone doing damage, then had them surrender. They ended up in Alma where there was no interrogation scene. When I freed them they were hopelessly underclassed compare to the rest of my team...

So, interrogation only happens in Tixa and the prison near Meduna?

there is no interrogation at tixa. it can't be. whoever says so, provide me a savegame

i've never had any playable charrs be locked in tixa except for dynamo and shank (but not mercs of the team that were captured)

But thats where they end up if you havn't "liberated" the prison before mercs surrender. Like I said above, the "experiment" I did with Razor and Haywire got them into prison before I even left Drassen, and they ended up in Alma with no interrogation scene. I freed them weeks after they were cought. Years ago, in my first JA2 game, I saw my team of 3 end up in the queen's prison outside Meduna, and that was after I have taken Alma and Tixa. I guess you really have to piss the queen off to be "rewarded" with the interrogation scene.

the interrogation scene is used if you have already conquered the prison in alma

but that's not the point. somebody told me there was (some early ja2 version, whatever) an interrogation cut scene in Tixa (not N7)

But i think it's impossible that there is or ever was an interrogation scene at Tixa. Please falsify Wink
