Edit: In case you haven't already added it - Explain the [Alt]+[Tab] behaviour of JA2 thoroughly. I've just read about the first steps of an apparently very intelligent JA2 noob who has figured out that the problem of constantly moving backwards is tied to the [Alt] key somehow. I suppose many players will find that irritating. In fact, it took me a while to figure out where the problem comes from. Current games usually don't have problems like that, they automatically set key presses back to the way they were when realizing a game had been minimized. A feature JA2 should have. =D
Anyway, I'd probably have given up as a noob if my merc keeps running backwards and I can't enter text in my savegame slot. This issue deserves a big red ATTENTION headline.

When using Alt+Tab and then returning to the game, sometimes the Alt key gets stuck as ON. This not only affects the moving backwards issue you described, but it also leads to selling inventory you click on instead of picking it up from the sector inventory. Anything that uses the Alt key is affected. I've gotten myself in the habit of tapping the Alt key whenever I return from minimized mode. This fixes the problem, but it would be nice if the problem could be eliminated.

PGUP Additional method of changing stances in the order of Prone, Crawl, and Standing. Pressing it while Standing next to a building with a flat roof will cause the Merc to climb onto the roof.
PGDN Additional method of changing stances in the order of Standing, Crawl, and Prone. Pressing it while Prone on the edge of a roof will cause the Merc to climb down.

BTW I think the hotkey list would be more useful if the whole thing was sorted into Tactical and Strategic.

Edit: In case you haven't already blah blah [Alt]+[Tab] blah...
When using blah blah explanation blah...
Sorry for that, I didn't mean "explain it to me", but "explain it in the New User Guide so new players don't have to find this stuff out on their own". And yes, I'm tapping [Alt] whenever the window comes up as well.

Absolutely.

Hey sorca, the idea of making this guide is great! And respect, cuz it'll be a lot of work.
Hope you're making good progress.

Anyways, a have an idea for your guide:
Headrock's How To Series is a great source of info, but goes into extreme technical details, which you specifically don't want for your guide.
However, it does include a few rundowns of important info...

For example:

Expirience level has effect on:

Toggle Spoiler

and

Things that help Chance-to-Hit:
Toggle Spoiler

These "rundowns" are excelent. They're not too technical, and anyone who's not an absolute beginner, can understand them.
All the rundowns are:
- Expirience level has effect on
- CtH for guns (Things that help Chance-to-Hit, Things that reduce chance-to-hit, Things you can do to avoid getting hit)
- CtH for HtH and melee combat (Things that help our CTH when attacking, Things that help our chance to dodge, Things that hurt our CTH when attacking, Things that hurt our chance to dodge)
- List of things that give us a chance to improve skills (Health, Strength, Marksmanship...)

With the addion of STOMP, and maybe some other features (which were added since Headrock wrote the How To Series), these rundowns would have to be updated a bit.
With Headrock's approval, and your green light, I'd be happy to do the updating, and help you a bit in this project. I suppose you'd want this stuff in an appendix (if your up for it anyway)

Also, let me answer "Why not just have links to the How to Series?"
Because, it's way too much scrolling all the way down to the simple answers Very Happy

And, another idea:
To include this formula (by Madd Mugsy in an old thread):
Hearing distance (of a sound, gunshot) = base volume + soldier's hearing ability - # of visible opponents - tiles away - 1 - 5 if running - 5 if sleeping + 5 if sound is higher - 5 if sound is lower - 5 if listener is outside and noise is inside and vice versa

Basically, it explains how the loudness of guns works.
When I started playing JA2, back in 2003 i think, I was a big fan of Night Ops (still am, but it does get too easy) and always wanted to know how gun loudness worked. Then a few years latter, came THIS THREAD, which was porn for me, and probably for a lot of other night stalkers (hmm that just sounds weird Embarrassed). Then latter came EDB, which finally showed the loudness of each gun ingame, so I was finaly a happy night-camper, who knew how to be as sneaky as it gets.
Hmm, after this rush of nostalgia for vanilla JA2 and early 1.13, let me continue...
Maybe the formula is a bit too technical so... You could just state that the loudness of a gun is the distance (in tiles) the sound is heard +- some other factors.

My point: every (new) player who wants to oparate at night, should know how gun loudnes works.

Hmmm, maybe have a part of the guide giving some basic advice on night ops, where this sound stuff is explained.

OK, cheers, let me know what you think, and good luck on your guide.

Status...- At this point, I also intend for this guide to be easily printable for use while playing the game. It's frustrating to have to exit or alt+tab just to find out the hotkey for a function.
- I also hope to make the common user comfortable with customizing their own INI files to get the true 1.13 experience.
- If you have written a guide or webpage that I would like to use as a source, I will attempt to get your blessing in advance. Conversely, if you have written (or even know about) another guide that may be useful for this guide, please post below or PM me so we can make it happen.

FILO:
- i used http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3053233 when i was setting up my 1.13 for a first playthrough (which i am at 70% ATM). Rather good one imo. Sure lots of things could be shortened, etc. Still an excellent starter overall.
- please do so indeed, very useful. Please put special attention to wrether any given setting can be changed or not after a start of the campaign. I guess there are at least few settings which cannot - or worse, _should_ not - be changed once canpaign started (or perhaps, even after 1st launch of the game and/or 1st save made?).
- frustrating for some, not for others. For me it's not, despite the fact i'm playing full-screen. Yet i know some others play window-mode, for them it's completely easy-peasy. Besides, there's in-game help ("H"), showing some (vanilla?) keyboard shortcuts, and information in this "in-game help system" is related to which screen was active at the time of "H" keypress - so while in tactical view, player gets some shortcuts which works in tactical, while in sector inventory - some shortcuts which are available there, etc. So quite often Alt-Tab is not needed at all. Worse yet, printable is nice only when it's a "good" printable. Which means, when it is compact enough and contains mainly useful-to-the-user (in some or other way) information. But users have very different needs, tastes, habits, obviously. Thus in many cases they'll only print "excerpts", not even selected paegs, but rather selected sentences - compiling them together into much smaller, easier-to-handle sheet(s) of paper. All that makes me wonder: perhaps it is not worth it to put significant effort to create printable version, and perhaps numerating topics/subjects instead of (or in addition to) pages would allow coordination you mentioned jsut as well?

Thoughts aloud only, of course. Best of luck with the guide!

So why is this pinned? It seems the guide was never written?
This thread is like a bad joke to be honest

It's pinned because it has quite some useful info selected collected as well as to remind everyone that there's something everyone - yes, that's including yourself Razz - might contribute to.

That's one theory at least. Another might be that no mod bothered to unstick yet. You might send a PM to any mod requesting unsticking of thread ...

IMVHO, as long as there is no new stable version and new features being added every week, any attempt to a comprehensive guide is doomed anyway ...
