So I was getting ready to go on the attack again when I'm hit with a massive attack. I lose more than half the militia in that square (full contingent, all regular militia), and my men are hit pretty hard.

I'm still licking my wounds when a few hours later I get a note from Enrico that I'm not doing a good enough job. Suddenly my support in the town I'm in drops just below the point where I can train more militia.

I realize it's just one of those things meant to make the game more challenging, and I'm not complaining about it that much... but doesn't it make Enrico look like a complete a-hole? I just defended his city from a major attack and am trying to restore order and all he can do is criticize me? It's not a good idea to piss off your only hope for your countries freedom!

I totally agree ... There always comes a point in my games where, no matter how good my mercs have been doing, things go pear-shaped (Usually during an attack on Grumm) and I need to take a few days off to hire new mercs, heal up and repair things. Inevitably Enrico tells me to get a move on, regardless of the way I've been chugging through his crappy little country.

Yeah, it makes the game challenging and yeah, it makes sense if I were to hit Dreassen and then hunker down & defend that town while training up my merc at the beginning but honestly, after a few towns have fallen, Enrico should back right off and let me do my job. If he really wants to run the country so bad, he can pick up a gun and fight with me, that Ahmed Chalabi wannabe.

I figure I should get credit for every battle my men are involved in.

I'm not sure if battles out in the open count to Enrico or not either... I think only battles involving taking over a city count to him. But heck, any time my men wipe out a contingent from the queen he should be celebrating!

Real life mercenaries wouldn't put up with this guy's attitude. They'd be like "Hey, you didn't hire me to paint your house, I'm trying to conquer an entire country on your behalf! If you think you can do a better job then pick up a gun and take back the country yourself!"

Any battle counts. ... If I suspect that Herr Chalabi might be getting sore that he's not being re-instated fast enough, I send one merc out into the wild to find some baddies & shoot one, then bug out. It seems that's enough to satisfy the Inconsistant One.

Well, apparently the battles don't count if you're defending a city.

I think, though, that your popularity can go down a little if you leave a gunfight without finishing it.

Nope. If you encounter enemies out in open country, Enrico will leave you alone; if you sit there for a week or so waiting for the bad guys to come to you, though, he'll start to kibbitz. Mad

A little, yes, and mercenary morale takes a hit, too. One might almost garner the impression that you were supposed to kill every hostile who crossed your path....

Good to know. Sometimes you're just run ragged trying to protect your cities and it's hard to get out and attack, in that case a small field attack might be best after all, even if you have to run from it.

I've never really noticed a drop in popularity if you pull out or a random, wilderness fight. Mind you, it's probably less than the MASSIVE every-city drop that Chalabi causes by his whining.

Overall, I think that's the worst part of the game.

That, and those stupid rocket rifes... C.H.E.A.P.

I just recently noticed the drop. At the time I was trying to solidify my position in Balime and had 2 soldiers on their way over to join my main group. Balime had just reached 20% so I was training militia.

My 2 men run into a squadron of 16, so I decide to drop in and try to pass out the side of the sector without being noticed. I'd done this before with no ill effects, but this time there was a soldier in view when I popped in. I popped back out imediately, but my popularity in Balime dropped to 18% and I could no longer train militia.

So I think it only happens when you've actually engaged the enemy in turn-based mode. If Balime hadn't had such a low popularity I probably wouldn't have even noticed.
