sysman@alice:~$ ja2 -fullscreen
ERROR: caught unhandled exception:
Failed to add node to world
Creating an emergency savegame succeeded (error.sav).
Please report this error with a description of the circumstances. Do not forget to attach the savegame.
sysman@alice:~$

In addition to that crash, there is a dead merc in the roster, and trying to remove that merc crashes the game.

I can proved error.sav file, if needed. And the QuickSave.sav just before the crash.

Two important questions: Is the bug reproducible with a savegame? What happend before?

I am currently working on a list of bugs and patches. I have not yet got a savegame with which I can reproduce this exception kind of bug. I would be happy to get one. I get some things done with eclipse on an xp system. I have not got the debugger working yet, so I might not succeed in tracking all bugs down. Maybe I would find a fix for anyone interested to apply to his code.

This merc removal crash has been fixed before. Which revision do you use? The merc can be removed by clicking on the assigment or on the contract. One location did not tend to crash the game, if you are looking for a workaround.

I remember the "Failed to add node to world" message as a problem which happened when a tactical screen was loading. It was solved in summer 2009. Tron introduced it when he worked on the editor by throwing exceptions everywhere in the code where return values were previously ignored. The problem of the nodes is that there are a (rather big) number of defective maps like in the mountains south of San Mona, or on the road between Balime and Alma where objects overlap and trigger an exception. The exceptions are probably simply ignored now.

The problem of removing a dead merc was solved in July 2010. Quoting Tron's post: "I corrected this problem in r7066. I caused this problem in r3615". The "assign" menu worked to remove a dead merc, the "contract" one didn't.

Tron didn't release his source code as a stable package since summer 2009. Anyone who can build the ja2 executable from source should download a working copy of the subversion (SVN) repository with a subversion client instead of the "source code" packages on stracciatella's home page.
