Have you ever tried playing JA2(gold) with your IMP only? In ironman mode (no game reloads)? If so, post your experiences here. Be sure to include where, when and how your IMP died. Also IMP stats would be nice.
All my games have been:
-JA2 gold
-Tons of guns
-Expert
-Sci-Fi
-Save anytime (But (practically) no reloads!, this is because of (fear of) technical issues).
I'm about to start my 7th hardcore solo game. Man... I've never had more fun with JA2 than now (although IMP dying ain't so fun ).
So far, the 2nd attempt was most memorable as my IMP assaulted Drassen airport and took total of 7 hits by yellow-shirts (killed by 7th)... ALL WITH CRAPPY PISTOLS OVER 20 TILES AWAY!! Goddamn I was furious! HAH!
--------------------------------------------------
Longest game (6th) so far was:
- 34 days (not too much loitering around)
- 256 kills
- 26 assists
- hitperc. 59%
- 31 battles (had Drassen, Alma, NE SAM-site, Balime)
- 39 times wounded
(these are the last confirmed stats as I accidentally saved over 'after he died' -savegame)
His stats were:
HEA... 85
AGI... 82(+2)
DEX... 70(+5) (can't remember if I took critical hit, prob. not)
STR... 89(+29) (exploits used, won't happen again )
LDR... 69(+34) (this one's god-honest purely by experience achieved number)
WIS... 80
MRK... 95(+15)
MEC... 47(+12)
EXP... 64(+29) (exploits, won't do it again. I swear)
MED... 52(+17) (lot of doctoring imo, also practically resurrected some of the militia)
Auto Weapons
Night Ops
CAUSE OF DEATH: Was hit by a flare during night-fight (sector S of Estoni), followed by a stun grenade after which got shot to pieces in the following round while lying around helplessly.
Exploits were applied around day 20 or so, so plz don't judge me as a complete cheater , I won't use them again. Ever. I promise.
--------------------------------------------------
If you're inspired to try a hardcore game of your own, I highly recommend giving at least 80 MRK as you get the MP5K (helps a lot! although I'm starting to think this as an exploit (BAD, BAD, BAD!!)
--------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah... this one was 4th game (maybe):
I was trying to take Drassen mine sector (3rd attempt in that game). There was a fierce fight between the (probably) last yellow-shirt and IMP. IMP was badly wounded and passed out behind a rock out of sight (energy booster wore off) and that's when the kamikaze yellow-shirt decided to pull out his knife and let me out my misery. (Just when I thought "I'm out of sight, he won't have the guts to come here")

Phew...
13th game over. Got nailed by a sniper when defending Alma (I13). I was already badly wounded behind a tree and was deciding whether to retreat to cover crouched or by running. I stood up, started running, on the 2nd step *BLAM*.. 7.62 WP stopped IMP dead on tracks. (Should've stayed in the rear in the first place but noooo... had to be there where I was surely to be spotted first (just wanted got shooting spot)).
Funny how some great things can end on a slight little mistake. (I hope I'm first one to ever say that ).
Although impressive (?) 306 kills, could've been (much) more if I've had more discipline to play it safe. Dammit.
Also, lost a sector at one point (long time since that happened last). 20 enemies vs. 20 militia (2 veterans, rest normal), enemies won and 12 of them survived!! Lost also a big bunch of good stuff, inc. mortar, FN-FAL (only one I had), camo kits, boosters plus other hard-to-get stuff at that time. Damn.
Also got nearly killed at one point when IMP was hit by tear gas grenade (no gas mask). It was town sector defense and lost all but 1 militia (green --> veteran, finished 4 enemies). When the tear gas cloud was dissipating IMP took 2 energy boosters and had 54 APs at best. Can you spell 'crowbar' ? 5 enemies left, all whacked to their well deserved deaths.
Game number 14 coming right up (maybe).

This one's been the weirdest/luckiest game of all:
At day 1, after dealing with Omerta I decided to do something different (usually I head to Drassen or San Mona first). I thought I'd pay visit to the Hicks, right away. Well... I thought they might be too hard to handle but I did have the TNT I found from Omerta... So if I can take out enough of 'em with that TNT I might have a chance.
So there I was, in the Hicks farm, I cracked the crates open to see if it was worth it... guardian vest, laser scope, sniper scope, nv-goggles, TNT.. definetely worth trying. When I went to check where to put that TNT there was like 7 or 8 of 'em in the main house, all in nice tight bunch --> TNT to 4 round delay --> ran into the corner inside the shack... *THU-TUMMM*. I don't know how many I got or wounded but there sure was a lot of bleeding moans after that . There was 1 in the shack but fortnately he didn't interrupt and IMP nailed him easily (MP5K, auto-weap. expert). So I took the best stuff and ran out. After some buckshot dancing and MP5K singing all the Hicks laid dead on the ground. IMP took one good shotgun hit and one scratched him during the 'incident'.
So what next, I was wounded, tired, had a good start with equipment, some in rather disappointing condition. And I didn't have a tool-kit.. hmmm.. "I guess I could pay visit to Perko to get my stuff fixed." So, I rested, headed west, didn't start any fight in NE Cambria sector but headed south from there where SPAS-15 did really good job. It was a night-fight with half of 'em yellow shirts. Found Commando and Spectra Vest there too . After Perko fixed the Spectra Vest, Commando plus other stuff. I was again asking myself... hmm.. 'Where to go now..?' (Luckily didn't get a counter-attack from D's troops..)
Central SAM site. That's it. I take it and stay there like 10 years before coming out again. Sure it's risky and Enrico will start bitching about lack of progress but what the hell.. I didn't have any towns yet so there was nothing to lose. Besides, Estoni was near so I could fetch (almost) any supplies I needed from there. (How much militia can you train with $20 000+ ?)
2:30 or something when I arrived to SAM-site (started at NE corner). I had Mini-14, Commando (with laser), TNT (no deton.), frag grenade, Spectra Vest plus other stuff. First redshirt went down by a thr. knife. Next 8-10 I nailed with Mini-14 (rarely one sees such retarded AI as in JA2): enemies were practically running back and forth near the guarding booths --> easy interrupts. I guess they couldn't decide whether to stay away from light or to come after IMP.
After they were down, came the hard part: the building. As you know (or not) there's two redshirts constantly watching the only door, one in each corridor. So it's a guaranteed interrupt for them if I walk through that door. That's where TNT came in. I decided to blow up the SE wall and sweep the building from there. TNT on the ground next to wall --> frag grenade --> *THU-TUMM*. Turn-based starts, there's hole in the wall and redshirt lying wounded on the ground. He didn't survive the following burst from Commando. At this point no-one hadn't pulled the tear-gas switch. I was getting worried since I needed it to cover me to take out the other camper in SW corner. I would've moved crouched behind the boxes and tossed a few stun greandes at him so he wouldn't interrupt me. I decided to do it anyway, hoping he wouldn't nail me to the head. BUT.. it got the first turn. I guess I snuck up on him --> burst from Commando --> one dead redshirt. So... there was at least one inside control room. Now the tear gas started flowing in and I took the redshirt's place as a camper. Next turn: nothing. After that: Interrupt! Grey shirt soon gained some weight... the amount of four 5.56mm bullets to be exact...
"Yeah! This is an enemy free zone."
Central SAM-site taken at Day 6, without a scratch. So next I started training militia until half were regular and half rookies. Then I decided to pay visit to Jake (still didn't have that tool kit). Got to Estoni and started searching the junkyard for springs plus steel tubes. It was night. After rummaging through junk I thought I check the house by the gas pumps too (there's sometimes duct tape in the bathroom there). When I was about enter the house I hear IMP saying
"This is a guaranteed combat area. Got enemies."
Oh crap.. this is just not possible. If I had luck like this, inverted only, I could propably win any lottery at any given time. So.. I figure they're the counter-attack platoon to take back the SAM, there's 20 of 'em and they probably came from south and if I run to north, circle around the fence and I might have a chance to retreat to east. IMP starts running north ---> *BLAM* --> Johnson is hit in the leg and collapses. "Oh christ.. I'm a dead man.", I thought.. But no!! Redshirt who shot me misses next 2 shots and a couple of others run by but don't notice me. IMP gets up, I check the world map.. 'only' 12 of 'em!! Hmm.. I wonder if I could take them out... I retreat and I retreat some more, turn around, crouch, wait... "Time to take out the trash!" First one goes down by the Commando. This repeats a few times and then... a flare!! But luckily I'm close the north corner of junkyard and got a corner there for cover. I stand up, IMP takes a few steps.. *BLAM* 7.62 WP nails him for 23 points (ouch!), but I get behind the corner. Luckily I had one regen booster which I take immediately. Rest of the suckers were interrupted when they came around the corner, where was that lit flare. IMP had no trouble bursting them to pieces. Not to mention... there was one grey shirt who dropped C-7!! Yippe-ke-ay-yee, m********er!! C-7 at Day 8!!
Now I was sure there's nothing that could stop me.
Next 20 days went nicely repairing stuff, training militia, defending SAM-site and stuff like that. Mainly to rack up kills and skills. However, it gets a little repetitive after 5 or 6 battles in the same sector consequtively. Hmmm... I guess I could finish the business with Cambria, starting with the mine sector! Besides, I had a little grudge on behalf of the previous 'Johnson' who was brutally interrupted and shot to shreds there.
So... on to the Cambria mine! Things started nicely (night-fight), took out first two with thr. knives. After that I decided to throw a few flares to set up a kill-zone. No luck... no enemies revealed after tossing two flares. I started moving crouched... *BLIM*.. combat starts, grey shirt tosses a flare at me!! (I could hear Steroid uttering in my mind: Dammit,Dammit,Dammit... this is not possible!!). No damage done, however. I retreat a bit, take a position and start nailing enemies left and right in the light of three lit flares! Finally when things settle I think "So there's like 3 or 4 of 'em left now...". And one of them must be camping in front of that small shack. Soon I toss my last flare there and nothing... No-one!! "This can't be right..", I was thinking, as Johnson moves in to take a closer look... BAD IDEA!! Camouflaged enemy nails Johnson mercilessly with 7.62 WP weapon (AK-47 maybe). He prob. had nv-goggles too. Johnson dies.
GAAAAAAHHH!!!
"Feels like my... insides are on fire."
(That was me thinking, not IMP saying)
"Somebody put me out my misery before I do it myself."
(Another one of my thoughts)
And this was the end of the second Johnson who was ,too, killed in Cambria mine sector. The third one will be really pissed by the time he gets there... I promise. :diabolical:
Morale of the story? I'm not sure. Maybe:
-The enemy is there, you just can't always see him.
-It's that little detail you didn't notice that eventually gets you killed
or
-When in doubt, throw a grenade.

btw - you play sci fi on solo? how do you intend to take out the huge numbers of bugs alone[/QB][/QUOTE]
With the elixir from Gabby on nothing is easier.Dancing on stealth mode around a crepitus larva can get the char, any char, to 100 agility in under 5 minutes!
I think you would make it past Omerta for sure,on ironman. But playing alone is dum,IMHO,too little loyalty in conquered towns, even if you would advance to lvl.5 by the time you get Drassen.Even on the blitzkrieg campaigns I have my IMPchar accompagnied by Joey,Maria or the Kulbas,to get higher loyalty, and to reload if I miss and make the compagnion do something to fool the random number generator.Plus, training militia takes too long, even with a teaching expert,Enrico sends the messages.Once got 4 attacks on Drassen and was lvl 8 by the time I managed to fully train militia(NO ex char).
Not impossible at all to make it to Meduna, but you have to use every trick on the book, and especially this one: on prone position on the roofs turn and spot.Provided you have roofs in the sector..."Exploits" are a must do for this manner of playing.

Ah...
Forgot to mention... daytime fights are suicides. Except maybe in the beginning.
Also observe your enemies, take out the most dangerous ones first.
A) Listen the gun sounds. For example, if there's two redshirts firing at you, other one has .38 and the other one 9mm, I'd take out the 9mm guy first 'cause at worst case, he might have MP5K, which can be a menace compared to .38 revolver. Burst fire can reveal the exact weapon, too:
3 round burst of 5.56mm = MP53
4 round burst of 5.56mm = Commando or G41 (nasty gun anyway)
and so on...
7.62 WP is always a nasty sound to hear unless you see a 4 round burst coming from the gun, in which case it means it's just that crappy Type-85.
Shotgun dude is pretty harmless 20 tiles away (most of the time ) whereas his friend next to him snapping those 5.56mm bullets at you can get you killed!
KNOW THY WEAPONS !! When you recognize their weapons, you know their capabilities.
B) You may have noticed that enemies do look different: different hair and skin colors. Take note which guys have most dangerous weapons (" I wonder where that blondie went with that 7.62 WP weapon of his...").
Following I'm not sure but... I suspect that gray haired men (and women) have the highest level (most experienced) so you might want to eliminate the old ones ASAP. (sorry, old folks )
Also you might wan't to take out the 'critical' -status enemies first. Dead guys don't fire their guns whereas 'critical' guys have sometimes a (un)fair chance to hit you.
About Enrico and town loyalty... I think there's a seven day period where you must make an offensive move. If you don't attack within 7 days, Enrico sends one of those emails and loyalty drops, so pick a fight every now and then, attack a patrol or another town sector. Don't rush, since once you have taken the Drassen airport (for example) you have whole 7 days to train militia/ repair stuff, etc. before taking the next sector.
Yea.. militia training is slow and tedious... I was considering taking that 'teaching' skill too... maybe sometime I take it.

have u seen the film of the 24h victory, ( seen it on daily or utube, but i have made a copy):
the guy hire magic and grunty for 1 day, land in omerta; grunty gives is canteen to magic and dismmiss.
magic go alone in cambria and get the 2 laws after killing 1 guard, .... he went to meduna, passing by border, he explode the castle walls with the laws, arrived directly in the bathroom and kill the queen ( she was taking her bath .
note: the canteen was usefull because he had no stamina (no sleep), i believe he do this in 1.07 but i' m sure it wasn' t in 1.13, because he had a sort of ingram with silencer: the perfect assassin !!
