It's 2005 and I just discovered Jagged Alliance! (Call me a late boomer, er bloomer.)

Last month, I told my friend that I was looking for a copy of XCom since it was the ONLY game that I ever really enjoyed. I said I didn't care for all those newfangled 3D combat games, and that I'd rather replay something because it's good than play something just because it's new. Anyway, he dropped by my house a few days later and left me a copy of JA2. Said that I should try it because it's just like XCom (turn based strategy) -- only better. I was extremely skeptical. (How can you improve on XCom?)

Needless to say, I was blown away by JA2. But I got depressed almost immediately because I realized that I'm addicted to a game that has been released several years back, so chances are slim that I'll still be able find anybody who shares the same enthusiasm for it.

And then I found this forum. Wahoo!!!

And then I found out about Deidranna Lives and all those other mods. So the fun won't end when I finish JA2. (I'm still in mid game and in no hurry to finish.) Double wahoo!!!

Cheers to everybody who's keeping this forum alive! I salute you guys! It's 2005 and Jagged Alliance still rocks!

BTW, I'm from the Philippines, where mercenaries often die. Wink

Congratulations for finding the IMO best computer game ever.
This forum is much like an anonymous JA2-player group, quite similar to the anonymous alcoholics with the difference that nobody here wants to get rid of his addiction. Very Happy

That's good to know so now I have someone to blame if my favorite mercs die before I can hire them

Best PC game ever for me too. Finish JA2, and then replay as the jazzed up Wild Fire. Even better this way.

Enjoy

Thanks KaraBenNemsi, JBF!

It is definitely the best game on the PC platform. No button-mashing, panicky real-time strategy for me!

And it's good to know that I'm not alone in my addiction!

Wow, I am a rather later blomer than Dex.
I just found JA and JA2 a week ago at Abandonia.com. Click! Now I think that I have my most interesting, challenging playing time ever!

Thank you all for this forum.
See you later.

I just quit playing meaningless MOORPGs with stupid society and loaded UC and might and magic 6... Hell yeah most games before 2000 rule.

Will do bro! Am taking things slow... BTW, what's the best progression? After I'm done with JA2, what should I try next and in what order? Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hya Dex! I'm in the same situation as you... I found out JA1 in the fall of 2004, played straight to the end. I just got a bit disappointed in the last sector(S1) because there were unlimited enemies... and me killing enemies like crazy thinking there would be and end.

And now I've bought JA2 and really enjoying!!

Dex, I suggest buying Unfinished Business next - it shouldn't cost much, and you'll need it for some other mods.
If you were disappointed by UB's small size but like the gamestyle better (eg: picking a starting team and sticking with them, rather than shuffling through mercenaries of ascending talent) - then download one of the UB mods. Sierra Gordo is entertaining, or Bears Pit 1.

When you're done with that, download Deidranna Lives, plenty of amusing changes.

Then try the excellent S.O.G. '69. I never completed this because of some game bugs, but it has the most historical/realistic feel of all of the mods.
You may or may not want to attempt Rubicon - I found it insanely difficult, but is interesting, may be worthwhile for a challenge.

***Urban Chaos has so many new features, you will play this one to death. I've suggested leaving it for later simply because other versions pale in comparison, so if you don't have much spare time, go straight to UC. It is way too easy, however, so you may want to edit it or play "ironman" (no saving in combat).

Speaking of editing, your enjoyment of the game will improve if you learn to use a few of the editing tools - the simplest are ProEdit and W4ST's WeaponEdit. Then you can tailor some of the details to suit your own playing style.

There are also some excellent foreign-language productions. Recommend that you become VERY familiar with the interface, or can read German/Russian. They are all difficult enough even if you know the language! The following should work okay on U.S. version:
Shady Job (Russian, based on UB, doesn't need CD to run). New features include moving enemy vehicles, combat is very deadly. NPC interaction will be guesswork unless you understand Russian.
Back to Business (German, requires UB CD). Looking promising, plenty of new NPC's & quests - unfortunately this means that understanding German is necessary to enjoy much of this mod.
***NightOps, my current fave. (Russian, JA2). Basically this is JA2 with so many improvements, it feels like a new game! I can't even begin to list the changes - controlled bursts, enemy vehicles, traitorous A.I.M. members - there are hundreds! The map is JA2, but it's been years since I've played the original version. This variant is so difficult, I've been playing for weeks and not yet able to hold two towns (last night the enemy assaulted Drassen airport with mortars!). Anyway, I should stop raving about NightOps on this post, it will be months at least before you savour it.

There are many other tasty-looking mods on foreign forums, but unfortunately they require the appropriate version (eg, German) of JA, won't run at all on English-language variants.

*Recommended to avoid WildFire - way too buggy, and unlike all the mods above, it's not free! Only worthwhile if you want the source code that comes with it.
I can't comment whether it's worth getting JA Gold, or even necessary, as I use JA 1.03 (patched to 1.07), but it should be dirt cheap.

WeaponX's 8000+ enemies savegame file (for JA2 map) is fun to play. It works for DL, haven't tested it on UC yet.

I also recommend, if you have space on your hard drive, to load a new version of JA for each mod. Each will consume a Gig or more, I currently have at least seven seperate JA mods installed.

Wow I am back too...
After searching the CD shops I finally found JA2 Wildfire, so that I could play both the original as well as the modded Wildfire. Thanks JayDee for the correction about JA2, I mean JA:DG, which is excellent as well.

Oh, now I got 200+ sectors instead of 60 in the original. And a lot of mercs to work with. I must read some posts of you guys first to get an overview.

Till then, see you all
