I'm working on an update for how the code handles Skyrider and Enemy Occupied Sectors. I know that in the vanilla game, you used to not be able to access hot sectors from the chopper. Now you can, though you still get notifications from Skyrider about not being able to. I want to setup an option so you can have one of three settings:
1- Vanilla setup meaning you get messages and can't change into a squad from the chopper
2- Current setup that drops you into the center of the map, but without messages
3- New setup that drops you at the map edge from the direction Skyrider entered the sector from, again without messages.

I've already worked out the code so that your team can be dropped at a map edge instead of the center of the map. So that's one part done. And I've added a JA2_OPTIONS.INI setting to control everything. I've even fixed it so that if you actually can "drop into a hot LZ", Skyrider doesn't give his warning about not being able to land in the sector. But I'm having some difficulties restoring the functionality that restricts you from moving a merc from the helicopter to another assignment while in an occupied sector.

I keep thinking it has something to do with the "active" options that appear on the assignment menu, but I can't seem to find the code that actually deals with determining which options are "active" and which are not. I've found where the box is generated and I've found where the box is displayed. Does anyone have an idea where the code figures out which options are "active"?

Great work!! Do you have time to help with the new SMP? Birdflu has a ton of code he wrote but could use some help.

I kind of liked the idea of having to be dropped in the middle of the map, it gives it more of a feel that the enemies were able to see you coming.

chris, i guess i can cut a combat-drop-message from his stuff, so make a speechfiles 097_055 (not yet used) to be activated

what'ya guys think of that

skyrider (r097_055)
Okay. Just so we're straight on this, just show me where ya wanna go. Serious trouble, there. [short pause] Roger, high risk, big fee.

edith: i can do that for german as well (if needed)

may be if he bumps into enemy on the lz with him we could have a 097_056 for that

feedback please, dudes

That sounds like a good idea Logi, use an unused slot for Skyrider. Buuut, are you sure you can make a voice recording matching the existing ones. Skyrider has a funny voice, kind of high pitched when he gets excited with a southern (?) accent.

i cut it from his files (needs adjusting at the 'ends') it's not a new recording - it's a patchwork-recording - kind of gefummel*, but doable in about an hour for both files in englisch and another hour for the german ones.

* don't know an english word for that

edith: need a 'go' from chris - if he can't enable new soundfiles it's kinda senseless

Yes, the new speeches would be great. I'll have to work on getting the code to recognize when to use them.

@Dieter: The field I've added to the ja2_options.ini will still let you go that route if you prefer. I've been playing with the "map edge dropoff" to test and it's still not an easy fight. Of the 5 battles I've run so far, 4 of them had a large number of enemies all well within visual range right from the start. I just figured the map edge made more sense. Would you jump out of a helicopter into the middle of 10 guys you could actually see from the air? Smile

As for SMP, I'd be happy to help with that but at the moment I'm working on some modifications to NAS and trying to get myself re-familiarized with the code. 18+ months without doing any coding has left me a bit rusty, though it's all coming back to me. Smile Let me finish what I'm doing with NAS and I'll join up with the SMP team after that.

so that means i'm starting to work on real ones instead of those mock-ups :bluecool:

... btw, those ambushes tent to be a bad thing ... for the enemy :pitchfork:

how about some warm-up to get reaccustomed to the code?

Yes, those ambushes do tend to be bad, but I notice that my squad takes more hits then they would if I were to "sneak up" on the sector. But then, my mercs also arrive better rested so it's a trade off.

I'm already starting to work out what will be needed to get those speech files to work. Only thing I'm not sure of is if I can get Skyrider to charge you extra for the drop off. It's possible you could create a route to a sector that has enemies you don't know about. And I believe you get charged when you establish the route. Not when you land. And even if it is when you land, you don't want to charge the higher rate just for entering an enemy occupied zone.... only for "landing" which I know if handled after you pay Skyrider.

Hmm. Do we have the ability to edit the .EDT files? I've set things up so that your new 097_056.wav file will play when we're trying to hot drop into a sector but instead of playing the sound, Skyrider's lips move and the text box say: I have no text in the EDT file ( 56 ) NPCDATA\097.EDT

We'll need to update that file as well, for the sounds to work, but I have no experience with that file.

we can of course edit them

we also need a gap-file, which we can also make

you debug 'error/message' is however all you need to know that your trigger works

you get that with a forgetful imp as well (there are no ###_034 for imps)

what you don't see is if a normal exe would crash on a missing file for that

give me a sec, i'll up a mockup-etd

The cut in your 097_054.WAV file (between his text lines "The Queen's SAM sites" and "Roger Cap high risk, big fee") doesn't sound very well. Maybe you can rework that. I think this speech file is also too long for ingame using.

Well, I would delete the "Cap" entry (marked with red colour in the screenshot) in your 097_055.WAV file and maybe extend it a little bit. The end sounds too snatchy in my opinion.

@scheinworld:

those were mockups (made them both in less than 10 minutes)

they are no way good enough to be used - just patched together as an example - the real ones will be made with multitracking-technics to avoid bad 'crossings' and such

do me a favour, please unpack german 097_###.wav (all of them) and 097.edt and up them somewhere - otherwise i need to install a german ja2 (=search the place for the cd)

I added the test edt file you included. 55 looks like it's working but 56 appears as gibberish:
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/3341/skyrider55.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6267/skyrider56.jpg

Both sound files are working as well. However, I'm thinking that 055 would be skipped if the "Silent Skyrider" option was enabled which means you should keep that in mind since, with that option turned on, Skyrider will acknowledge your flight plan as well. So he's going to be saying 055 followed immediately by 027.

Anyway, I think the coding to make the new speeches work is in place. I'm still not sure how to make Skyrider charge you extra for hot dropping. We can't charge before the fact because we don't necessarily know the sector is going to be entered and we don't want to charge the higher fee if we're not actually going to get out of the chopper. But we're charged for the flight as soon as we reach the destination so we're still not "On Duty". And if I tried to charge when you switched to be "On Duty" not only would you not get a warning so you could make sure you wanted to pay the cost, I'm worried that you could inadvertantly be charged to go "On Duty" even if you weren't in the helicopter or in a hostile sector.

@all: There is a new EDT Editor. It is called EdtMegaEditor and was developed by Bugmonster a few months ago. I think it is the best EDT Editor and very easy to handle.

I have uploaded the editor here. Try it out and I am sure you like it.

Thanks Marlboro. It's nice to be back.

I can't seem to open the 097.edt file that Logisteric posted the other day with that program, Rowa. But then, there did appear to be a corruption in one of the temporary texts that he set up so that may be the reason. I was able to open the default file, though so that was kinda cool. It is a nice program. Though the "Save as" option doesn't look like it's working.

As for the update, I spent a fair bit of time testing last night (i.e., playing and having Skyrider do all my traveling) and so far the new changes are working. As soon as Logisteric is able to finish new sound files and updated edt file, I'll put these changes into the development branch.

okay, my skydrive seems to work again and im back from dresden- so here is the englisch variant of skyrider's new speech-files. if you have any comments post them.

Skyrider (055: sam-covered aerea)
Got a couple of concerns, Cap. The Queen's got SAM sites spread across the country. Makes the risk higher; okay, big risk- big fee. I'll get you wherever you want to go.

as we all know, mr. bullock is a little talkative so i considered a line like a microsoft security-warning would be fitting.

Skyrider (056: enemy occuipied lz)
Got unfriendly activity below. - Okay, i'll be looking to get paid when the trip's over.

in this the pause (-) is intented, as if he decided to comfort you ace, as it is your butt that is at risk.

@ chris, afaik you are the onlyone with a proper exe, would you please test it ingame

@ all, if you find typos in the etd, please tell me as marlboro rightfully said, i have the 'bad zypisT'-trait

[color:#CC0000] deleted an invalid link - have a look down below for it[/color]

hope to get the german files ready tonight

I'm the only one with an exe becuase I haven't commited the code anywhere. I was waiting until the sound and edt files were ready.

I listened to the sound files and they both sound good. There is a typo in the 055 EDT line: "Makesm the risk higher". Should be "Makes the risk higher". And there's a typo in the 056 EDT line: "Okay, i'll be looking". Should be "Okay, I'll be looking". Otherwise they work fine. If you can fix those two typos, I'll see about getting this new code committed to the development branch. Smile
