Wildfire.
Tixa.
Mike in the graveyard. No backup. His SS Korps slaughtered by 1 throwknife and 2 USP rounds.
Miguel(NO/Knifing) is alone, level 8 (97 marks), on a commando mission.
He has availiable:
2 cans of smoke,
1 throwknife (second lodged in rooftop sniper),
1 knife,
1 crowbar,
1 scilenced and lazer scoped USP (13 rounds, no extra ammo),
1 dart gun (2 extra darts (formerly 3, one used to disable warden and beat her with a crowbar.),
1 Remmington shotgun (lazer and sniper scope, 14 extra rounds of buckshot) (not silent, but usefull when you're discovered),
100% camoflage, full energy, no dammage,
a pair of wire cutters (used to gain access through the back),
extended ear,
a pair of UVs,
and a gas mask (in inventory).

Now, with that equipment in mind, what would you do?

I'll tell you what I did.
Mike is dressed as a greyshirt. Therefore, he gets no special treatment. 1 throwknife to the back of the head on 99 dammage. :luckystrike:

LOL

That kicks ass.

Smile

I always manage to find Mike when there's nobody around who'd recognize him. Last encounter I never knew he was in the zone 'till I read that Mike had been killed in the history log - My wandering militia must have picked him off when I wasn't looking.

The time before that Flo got him at range while he looked around trying to figure out who was shooting him in the head.

He wasn't looking for long.

Never played JA1.
If Mike works for the other side, he dies, as far as I'm concerned.
Anyone notice the funny Mike glitch (applies to tanks as well)? You see them, and they ask to surrender... in a rather interesting way. With a child's quote. Very Happy

All Mike ever did was get my team killed, collapse in front of vital exits, and get the rest of my team killed.

The only thing I found funny about him was the way that he talked. He sounded like a cyborg sent from the future Mad

***

I'd sneak up behind him and stealth kill him with the shotgun. I spent.. Oh... JA2 and three mods using them extensively.

I've never managed to hurt anyone in a serious way with throwing knives. So, I belive it when people say that they killed someone with throwing knives. I'm just convinced that it took a lot of quickloads in order to do it.

However, martial arts is super deadly, when you use it right.

Not sure for the other mods, but in my 8000+ game i just recently started to enjoy the fun of the whizzing knife. Carrying a dozen of them on my IMP. Sometimes having up to 10 kills per sector with thr. knives only(night battles). Gray elites too, spectra or not spectra. Sometimes i got the -2 or -3 damage hit, but that happens mostly if the victim is looking generally my way. If i catch him from behind, i use max AP for aiming and it usually connects.

On a sidenote about stealth, did any of you manage to sneak up *right* next to a guy without him noticing?

I did that with my expert MA IMP in full camo, got within fist distance unspotted or heard, stood up, punched the poor greyshirt, stole his gun while he was still up, KOed him, and proceded to laugh at the 3 return punches, each of which were dodged. :karate:

Then I had a problem. Shoot him with my own firearm, shoot him with his own gun, sink 3 throwknives in him, knife him, beat him down, or leave? :rulez:

My best martial artists are often able to sneak right up behind a guy without them noticing. Often it takes quickloads, but... If you spend only half of your APs each turn while stealth-moving, and you stealth-walk the last couple of squares, you seem to make less noise. You can walk right up behind a guy, laugh softly to yourself, whisper sweet nothings in his ear, then snap his neck with your bare hands. Then exult in just how hardcore you are.

I have never figured out how to use the martial arts skill. Is there any certain thing you have to do or is it randomish?

The most fun I ever had playing through JA2 was with an IMP with night ops and thowing as his spacialties...no gun, just throwing knives and (for thos sticky situations) lots of grenades

Playing wildfire today in my lunchbreak at home:

Situation - Stoming Cambria and the mine in a night attack.

My IMP is scouting ahead [night ops and stealth] backed up by Miguel. My Imp stands cover while Miguel takes point.

Miguel enters the large processing building that leads to the mine. He's armed with an AKM and has NV goggles.

Suddenly he gets an interupt as a grey clad enemy pops out from behind some machinary only 3 tiles away from him.

It's Mike but Miguel doesn't react.

Flicking over to auto fire & filling the target full of lead, he blows the guts out of the shadowy figure.

"The gun is a good teacher of lesson" he remarks cooly as he goes on to clear the rest of the building, blazing away on auto fire, cutting down his enemies with methodical precision.

Miguel is my hero!

I never liked Miguel. Honestly, what kind of leader is he? Hiding out in some basement with a rather good team plus good enough stats to take at least Drassen, he seems pretty cowardish to me. He prefers starving to fighting and will not join the battle when it's hopeful, but when it's safe for him.
Still his attitude is somewhat arrogant like he wants to tell me how to do things right. Well, Mr Cordona, if you knew how to do things right I wouldn't be there in the first place, so keep mouth shut and follow orders.
He was never that useful in battle also and still missed way more shots than, say, Carlos who I actually like. That's the reason why Carlos was only put in Tixa while Maddog put two shots in the back of Miguel's head while facing the throne he would never occupy. I needed some Che Guevara-like martyrer anyway when Fidel becomes ruler of Arulco.
To say it with Razor's words: "If the Arulcans can't defend their own country, they don't DESERVE their own country. We oughta take it over and kick 'em all the hell out."

@ systemfehler. Use the early rebel patch then Miguel & team can indeed take Drassen and he comes into his own in a major way. He's usually level 9 with 96% plus marksmanship by the end of my games.

Yeah I'm currently thinking about that, but I don't like any of the rebels except Carlos. And I fear that taking Miguel along with this high leadership (what for, anyway? :>) makes training militia a bit too easy. But oh well, maybe I just take them as a B-Team anyway. At least there would be 4 mercs where I wouldn't care if 3 of them die.
By the way, I offered Miguel the brave death with a blade by his own hands, but he refused. Still have to find a merc who is willing to cut himself.

It all depends on the sneaking itself. If the enemy's in range one can easily run up to them and knock them down with a few hits.
But if somebody just stops near the enemy and ends his turn the snapperhead will just look around, eventually noticing the player and will shoot him.

Still, to be somehow on topic-the battle of the namesakes Miguel and Mike sounds epic...But it reality it's not.Either the one will kill the other or the reverse.Same goes for every other character in game. After all no matter how good a character is, he's still just one against many others. It's hardly possible to compensate the lack of AP per turn against 5 or more people.

Interesting. I always wondered how the instant knife kills worked so I just went and looked it up.

Basically, if you toss a knife and hit you have a chance of an instant kill. That chance is...

10%
+ 10% per Throwing trait that you have
+ the amount you made the attack roll by

So the last one is the most important and shows why it appears to be so random. Even with expert knifing you may only get a 30% chance because your "attack roll" may have just made it to get a hit.

In some respects I think that last part is broken. You can't get a higher than 99% chance of hitting even if you are standing right next to your target.

I've been wondering about that myself...

So I suppose my Night Ops / Throwing (one throwing trait) IMP will get a minimum chance of 20% instant kill?

What's the "attack roll" in this case though? Does this go up per increased aiming circle?
Does this have to do with the (0-255) number you guys were discussing in the hail mary thread?
Is this attack roll also affected by MRK, DEX and EXP level?

It's weird, I always thought it had something to do with how one is positioned, behind an enemy it always seemed to give a much higher chance. I guess that's false then.

I am playing with the old early rebels patch now and after a short bootcamp and some raiding, the rebels along with Wolf and IMP decided to take Chitzena as a first.
To my surprise we got overrun by enemies and shot up badly while forced to retreat to sector exit; Wolf was unconscious and close to death by then and so was Miguel. Ira was running back and forth bandaging the heavy wounded and dying ones but we quickly ran out first of first aid then med kits then of ammo. If we retreated now we would have to leave people behind, plus the other members of my squad were bleeding at least lightly and I was all out of first aid, so this was no possibility. Somehow we manged to hold position until the rush was over.

Carlos and Dimitri went out looting the enemy for first aid kits and ammo, sometimes luring one or two enemies to our hiding spot, but no real danger there.
When everybody was patched up and equipped with what they could grab, I thought to give it a go to finish off the remaining enemies. I was hoping that some of them were carrying medical stuff like the other ones. Couldn't be more than 3 or 5, so what the hell, if we survived before this should be a piece of cake, even with a half dead and bleeding squad. It was a bad idea, right from the start. We soon spotted another enemy and opened fire, no problem whatsoever, the remaining resistance started dropping pretty fast.

Then Mike, shining armor, G11, full health et al, stepped into the scene, hit Wolf and sent him to unconscious again then hit Ira, wounding her critically. He kept going full auto on them in every turn while Carlos and Miguel put him one to two SKS rounds in the chest.
(I really should have known it; I mean I made Mike availabe the first day because I figured if I could have the rebels & Iggy from day 1, why not have the bitch have Mike. Didn't thought he would be right away in the first city I attacked though, next time he'll probably be waiting right in Omerta.) If Wolf was hit again, he'd be dead, so were most of my other mercs, but somehow Mike couldn't score a hit on anyone. In the end, Mike went down to critical and fled from Dimitri's Type 85 suppressing fire. He died in some bushes like a wounded animal, I didn't even see it, just the trace of blood and by that point, blood was all over the map anyway, I didn't know anymore which was theirs and which was ours. Of course that poor bastard didn't have a first aid kit with him and neither had the other dead enemies, no first aid on the whole map actually.

So I was victorious after a hell of a battle with bleeding mercs and no chance of bandaging them. On the edge of cheating I sent Miguel into the mine to check out if a med kit is there and indeed, it was. Lucky me. Just in time he came to the surface to pass it to Ira who quickly bandaged the bleeding ones. Still no chance of healing those 6 up to full health with one med kit, but hey: Now I have a G11. Ho-Ho-Ho.
