I am new to this forum, so i hope i make everything right with reporting a bug, at least i think it is...

i use JA2 Gold and applied "SCI_113Beta_r4057_20110116". Also i tried wildfire mod as well, same result. yes i used a fresh plain version, nothing modded before.
the result is always the same. i start a game and as soon as i enter the turn based combat mode, some mercs (also my created one) has a weapon with ?? in the ammo. the number of left ammunition is not shown. i tried several unloadings and reloads without any help. some weapons from mercs show the number without any issue. back in non turn based mode the number of ammo is again shown.
also, when i tried wildfire mod, my main character had a sniper rifle with 5 possible ammo rounds and it showed ??. not even that, after 1 shot it showed "no ammo" (even though i could unload the gun with correct numbers left) so it is unusable...

i did something wrong ? it seems to be an obvious bug (or my fault)

that is a ham feature - only quality mercs know how many bullets are left

welcome to the pit

It's called "Bullet Count Intensity" and is exactly what Logisteric said, a HAM feature. You can turn it off in the JA2Options.ini-file.

The idea is that your mercenary loses count of the number of bullets in the heat of battle. More experienced and smarter mercs won't lose count as often. I didn't like it as first but I played a whole game with it and I hardly noticed by the end.

Welcome to the pit LaxeCas!

Not to be rude, but reading the feature list/documentation would have prevented you from posting this thread.
It is intended to look like this.
This simulates that lower level mercs forget, during the heat of battle, how many bullets they have left in the clip. The letters are a indicator for mercs with a little more exp. H in this case means there is a high amount of bullets left in the clip.
It will go back to normal outside of combat and if your soldiers are expierenced enough.

If you dont like this feature you can turn it off in the .ini file, something with hide bullet count iirc.

regards

Imho this feature would be better if mercs would have some rough idea.. i.e. your merc knows there got to be about 15-23 bullets left in a 30 ammo clip, shown as "15-23", with the range narrowing down with experience... a lvl 5 like Scully should be able to narrow it down to a 2-3 bullet range most of the time.

Also make it dependent on the length of bursts, if it isn't already.
Firing 35 bullets in full-auto, even a lvl 7 auto-weapons skill merc like Len might become unsure if he just fired 34, 35 or 36 bullets. He's good at shooting in auto-mode but hes not a counting savant.
Maybe also factor in auto-weapons skill.

?? for unknown
?H for half
?F for mostly full
?E for mostly empty

I think this is what is currently used, though I don't recall seeing anything other than ?? and ?H (which you can currently see in the screenshots)

Actually, it's ?H, ?M and ?L for high, medium and low ammo count, going by 1/3 steps. And no, it doesn't take burst length or going psycho into account (while it does apply a penalty for being psycho). The reason is simple: You'd need new variables in the mercstruct which you then need to save to file as well ... that's stuff you want to avoid.

In a 30 round clip:

I thought it was H for high (20-30), M for medium (10-20) and then L for low (0-10).

In my game, it's the same as DepressivesBrot and Off_Topic said - ?H/?M/?L.
