@vvzar:

What version of Android is running on your device? (preferably the full version string)
Stock ROM or customised ROM?
Do you have apps installed that mess around with permissions?

After looking at your log, this little line:
09-27 09:20:57.174 I/DEBUG ( 48): #01 lr afd103f0 /system/lib/libc.so

looks like a broken libc.so to me. Some devices have a modified libc.so that does not work correctly with the headers supplied by CrystaX toolchain.

Could you please test the other versions of the port? Especially alpha1 and beta6. They are slow as hell but if they work after skill select, the problem you have might be within the text functions inside libc again.

Hi!
Many thanks for this port Very Happy It's my favourite game and I'm really glad that I can play it on my phone (SGS) xD Great work! I am using RC2 version and have a problem with stripped merc names and directions (when merc hears the move). Change the map does not help. And screens:

http://i52.tinypic.com/a3csgp.jpg
http://i51.tinypic.com/16784tl.jpg

And a question: Is it possible to run this game using 1.13 mod? Smile

Edit: And another problem when I'm buying something in Bobby Ray's shop. I can't see costs of selected items:
http://i53.tinypic.com/2l8kd2.jpg

Next problem: When i'm trying to hire a merc and i have not enough money and click transfer funds i can only close the window using cross button. I can't click cancel, transfer funds again or change duration of contract.

Ah!

Your cpu lacks the 'neon' feature, which means you don't have hardware floating point operation support. So it might be (not absolutely sure) that ja2android bails out as soon as it tries it's first float operation.

So, what do we do... hmm

Could you please try the 'BETA3 multi ABI' I posted earlier?
Binary BETA3 multi ABI support Version http://ubuntuone.com/p/1GoK/ (1.9 MB)

It will be slow as hell, but try to start a game and reach the laptop-mode screen. If that helps, then the multi ABI support will provide software-float-emulation for your phone. Then I can compile the new RC with this feature too and you should be good to go.

If not, I will try to dig out some compiler flags to enable support for devices without 'neon'. Hopefully I can get this fixed.

@Kuros666:

Thanks for your test report!

I know about the issues with the stripped merc names in the loglines (like 'I gave to S' should be 'Ivan gave pistol to Scully')
Somewhere the strings are not loaded correctly, but I could not find out where. Still searching though...

As for the Bobby Rays problem: same thing here, I will fix it as soon as I can find it. But since this does not impact ordering from BR directly, only the GUI, I did not spend too much time searching for the problem.

So: please be patient. As soon as the general problems with the crashes on older devices are resolved (or declared impossible to fix) I will fix the string issues and hopefully someday also deliver localised versions. I do this in my spare-time, so it might take a little while.

I have tested game RC2 on ZTE Blade with CPU ARM6 600 mhz, it`s works!!! feature "neon" is absent on this device!
so probably the reason is not in FPU?

on A1000 mt6516 416Mhz 2.2.1 froyo:

armv6 version cant installs
armv5 - crashes as like rc2

@vvzar:

Hmm, strange the other builds did not work. Then it might be libc.so after all.

You can put logs on pastebin.com and post the link here. The forum might block posts that are too long.

Also: does the game crash only on 'new game' or also on 'preferences'?

Ok, i want to report a problem. When I killed a guy on the roof and he falls and the game crashes. Before the game shuts, it save a state named: error.sav. I killed before one guy on the same roof in the same sector, but there were not a crash after fall. Here you can see a situation:

http://i53.tinypic.com/wk0m0i.jpg
http://i54.tinypic.com/34snq78.jpg

And here you have a save before the crash (maybe you want to see this Smile):

Ive tried to load savegame posted above,
game exited in the middle of the progress bar on loading screen

When i loading savegame, after crash, in log file, in the section where was DEBUG strings with libc.so and libapplication.so, now i cant find them!

the Game seeks savedgames files in the root of /sdcard/app-data/com.opensourced.ja2/ folder, may be by this reason we cant load save in the continue saved game menu? this option not active while we do not create savedgames subfolder, even after save folder present, game cant see the saves in this folder, only in the /sdcard/app-data/com.opensourced.ja2/

2 IronArthur

On ZTE Blade all works fine for me too. I think no difference between our devices (in CPU section)

2 Omni_graphical

on A1000 MTK6516:

RC2 build: Game exited only after confirmation of difficulty level in new game menu.

RC1 build: same symptoms

Beta6, Beta3 exited at startup screen with settings button above

ARM v6 build even cant install apk

ARM v5 build doesnt works as like as RC2

in log for ARMv5 build i found this string:

09-30 02:06:03.495 I/DEBUG ( 48): 486a8730 822b66e0 /data/data/com.opensourced.ja2/lib/libapplication.so

those strings i`ve never seen before (on RC2 build)

Game exited only after confirmation of difficulty level in new game menu.
preferences, and others: all works fine

Thank you for your work.

@Kuros666:

I wonder if that might be a Stracciatella problem and not just a problem with the port. I did not touch code related to other things except strings and rendering.
And it is reproducible? Hmm...
Have you tried to load the error.sav? You can load it by renaming it to SaveGame10.sav (or any other save slot of course). I once had a crash and the error.sav helped to resume exactly after the crash-event. Sometimes however the error.sav produces weird states of the game: I suddenly had two mercs named 'Blood' instead of one...

@vvzar:
Thanks for trying all versions. Could you please use pastebin.com (or any other service) to upload your logs? I need more than just the logline with the error. The RC2 of ja2android reports what works during initialisation of a new game and what fails. This way I can pinpoint the location of the failure a little better.

THAT is a good point! I'll look into it soon!

several experiments with savedgames tells me the reason why menu item not active is: game placing saves into the root folder of cache but it should check is folder "savedgames" exist, if no, must create one, and read or write saves from there

First of all, a big thanks for you, Omni_graphical! Great work!
I wish i wrote here just to say thank`s, but i dont Sad

I am have a problem rinning this port on my X5A-G tablet device (ARM 11 Telechips 8902 800Mhz, 256mb DDR2, android 2.1).
On every build posted here, i have black screen after sdl splash, then the game is crashes. I am tried to move data files to nand and edit ja2.ini, with the same result.

alogcat: http://pastebin.com/mfmd8T1H

EDIT: I am tried this port on my device running android 2.3, and it works more than great!!! But sadly android 2.3 for my device is very buggy and not functioan at all, so i returned to 2.1.
Is there any possibilities to run JA2 on android 2.1? If they exist, can i help you smth? (android is dark forest for me, but the programming and linux is not)

PS Sorry for bad English...

Sorry for the late reply, I'm currently very busy with another non-android project and don't check this forum every day.

@Xandr001:
I have no reports on running ja2android on Android2.1. All testers used at least 2.2 until now.
Your log shows the port bailing out with a SIGILL, so it tries to run an illegal instruction. It might be related to the fact that I built the APK for 2.2+ versions, but pelyaSDL (the SDL port I use) should run fine on older versions of Android too. Did you also try Android2.2?
You could also be suffering from a broken libc.so problem, meaning that the libc.so you are using does not contain a specific function used by ja2android.
I do not have enough time to debug this in-depth now, but since you said that you have experience in programming, I suggest you try out compiling it yourself using the various options from pelyaSDL and different NDKs (CrystaX provides more than one). I simply do not have the time to experiment with all the options (compiling always takes more than 15minutes on my old machine X-))
If you are able to use 'make' and if you know your way around in shell, it should be very easy to compile on your own. I included a small howto in the readme attached to the sourcepatch, it should help to get you started. Contact me if you need help compiling.
Also try to run other pelyaSDL based ports to check if the problem is not related to pelyaSDL.

The port should run fine on most 2.2+ devices with stock ROM or Cyanogen. I have currently no report on success on 2.1 devices, though it should theoretically run on 1.6+ too.
As for the JA2 version: you should be fine with the default English version. Speech can be used from any localised version (I have received confirmation that the Russian speech files work nicely), but you need the English data files or the text rendering will be buggy to the point of causing various crashes in the game. (You can still buy the English version as download for 10$ - DRM free.)

Ok Im very new to Android etc. I used to have an iPhone before and apart from that I sadly dont know much about software programming etc =/
So I have got the Android Version 2.3.4. I looked at this Cyanogen Softwar and Im not really sure if I want to switch to it. Would it be the only way to be able to run JA2 on my device?

Your phone should work just fine.

Just download the APK file I posted (see first post of this thread or use this link: http://ubuntuone.com/1UG3dutJ7cdsRKemMlGQWe) and install it on your device (copy to sdcard and use a file-manager (FEX, Astro, etc.) OR just download from your device directly and install OR use 'adb' via USB). I'd prefer the first method, as you also require to move your Jagged Alliance 2 Data folder on the sdcard.
If you follow the instructions in the first post, everything should work.

Should you experience any problems with that, just post them here. Smile

So I tried and failed.
I installed the App by putting it in my download folder via USB, installed it with Astro and then copied the com.opensourced.ja2 file into the G:/Android/data/ folder. But when I run the App it crashes at the First Screen that appears.
Did I copy the file into the wrong folder? Did I miss something? So near and yet so far... ^^

Okay, there seems to be a misunderstanding here.

1. You need a Windows installation of the normal Jagged Alliance 2 on your PC. The english version is the only compatible one. german and russian version DO NOT WORK CORRECTLY. You can buy an english version online (see first post in this thread) if you can't find a boxed one.

2. In the folder you installed the normal Windows Jagged Alliance 2 you will find a folder named 'Data'

3.1 That 'Data' folder needs to be copied to the sdcard. The folder is about 600 to 900 MB in size.

3.2 You need to rename ALL files inside the 'Data' folder (and ALL subfolders) to lowercase!!! (example 'Sounds.SLF' to 'sounds.slf') Your Windows does not care about lower or upper case, but the linux on your Android does.

4. After renaming all files to lowercase copy the 'Data' folder with all its contents to the sdcard

5. Go to Astro and navigate to /sdcard/app-data/com.opensourced.ja2/ copy the 'Data' folder there.

6. Your original JA2 'Data' folder should now be under this path on your Android device: /sdcard/app-data/com.opensourced.ja2/Data

7. Now you can start the game. Smile

Hi there, another new member here!

This project sounds really amazing, I would love to try it out, but I only own a German copy of the game, and thus I don't have the needed English data folder.

Would it be legal if someone sent me his working data folder, if I verified my ownership of a JA2 licence to him?

Thanks for the reply!

@dic:
I don't think it would be legal in the views of the current copyright holders. I can only suggest to buy the english version online for about ten dollars. Also some german versions are censored and do not allow Pablo to be hit instead of bribed (missing speech file).

Just wanted to check out the Stracciatella Port, sounds like a great thing.

Nevermind then, I don't want to steal. Smile

Just for testing you can *try* with the German data files. But I can't guarantee it'll work at all.

Oh, I already tried the German data folder, even before I registered, doesn't work on my Samsung Galaxy S2 though, I'm sorry.

Dear OG,
it runs perfectly on my GS2. But it is not really playable. Is it possible to zoom in? Your tool seems to translate the preferences into german( my device settings) but he translation is not very good. And so it is not always clear what the true meanings are.

This port works amazingly well on my GS2. You're my hero Smile

only a few issues apart from those already reported :

- the sound is very low. i found no way to increase it (in game and smartphone volumes are set to the maximum)

- the battery usage is extreme. Maybe it comes from SDL ?

@Logon

Sound should be loud. Remember to set the correct volume ('media') on your phone to max before starting the port. Then max out the ingame volumes. Sound was never a problem in previous tests, so it would be strange if it is now...

As for the battery usage... well, it's a PC game so it uses quite a lot of CPU power all the time. The ported code is already partly improved to reduce CPU usage. You can try without music by renaming your music.slf file, that might save you some minutes of battery.

Have fun playing! Smile

Right, i set the general volume of my phone but not the media one.
Now it's fine Smile

Now maybe one of the most important issue to fix would be the one about missing npcs ? (but i've not see the issue yet after a couple of hours of play.)

Next portage requests: (just kidding)
- Frontier Elite or First Encounter
- Arena or Daggerfall
- Dungeon Master 2 (the first one have already been ported) and CSBwin
- ADOM and a couple of other roguelikes
- Sword of Fargoal
- Wizadry 8
Then my phone would be a gaming paradise...
