@Logon:

bugfixing will take a while since I'm involved in several other projects. The missing npc problem can be worked around by frequent saving/loading.

Most DOS games though can be played with the Dosbox ports for android... performance is sometimes bad, but sometimes it works out nicely.

EDIT: I suggest the Exult (Ultima7 & Serpent Isle) ports (there should be two available, one SDL and one Java/Dalvik). Ultima 7 on tablets rocks!

after several hours of play i have to confirm : JA2 on GS2 is as fun and playable as on a PC.
I've replaced the original battery by a 2600 mA and renamed the music file then its more reasonable.

i wonder how playable it would be with the pen and the huge screen of a Galaxy Note. Maybe direct mouse targetting would become possible.

Hi,

I just wanted to let know that it works wonderful on my Acer Iconia Tab.

As a side note, for those who doesn't know this freeware, I used "Bulk rename Utility" to rename all the files to lower case in one click.

I use Linux so a simple shell command like this one http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/convert-filenames-lowercase did it for me Smile it should work on OSX too.
On Windows systems this should do the same: http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/tips/jsi-tip-0568-how-do-i-convert-a-file-name-to-lowercase-

Hi Omni_graphical,
I'am so exited with this port of the greatest game ever on earth. I want to thank you for that, well done!
I have tested your game on my Galaxy Note and it seems everything is working pretty smooth and ok but I have one issue.
It seems I can't calibrate mouse pointer to be precise on Galaxy Note, I mean the cursor is pretty precise with S Pen but on the edges of the screen the cursor is not pointing the same spot where i press with the s pen or my finger, the cursor close to the edges goes a little off for about 2 mm from where I point. The same applies to finger I think.
I'am not sure how precise the cursor is on other smartphone like Galaxy S2 but on Galaxy Note it is so. DO you know any way to calibrate the precision of the cursor more precisely because the calibration on the settings doesn't give me the results, besides I can only calibrate there with finger when I try to calibrate with S Pen it goes back to menu without me hitting the menu button. Any thoughts?

Samsung announced Galaxy Note 10.1 no with S Pen as well so I'am excited now Wink

O.M.G.

I'm so unbelievably happy to read you've done this!!

I have the Linux build of JA2, will the data files from this work fine as well?

Well I found my windows copy and copied the data directory from the CD onto the /sdcard/app-data/com.opensourced.ja2 / folder. (and yes I changed it all to lowercase)
the game launches waits a few seconds then closes, this is on my Gnote.

One question I do have is what is this "Stracciatella" ?
My CD's for JA2 dont have that word on them anywhere...
Is it possible i have a different version?

Because what i've done is just copied the data dir from the install CD...

(I also PM'ed you, but its better to have those issues discussed in the public part, so others with the same problem will find help too Smile)

I don't know if one can get the GNote's pen to be more precise but Logon reported that it works nicely. May he can help?

@Logon: do have the same issue as wortek? If not, can you help?

@senectus:
You need the data folder from the installed version. The data folder you use for the linux build should work fine Smile Let me know if you have further problems.

Here is an update guys.
I have rooted my galaxy note and install an ICS on it, now I can finally calibrate mouse with S Pen and more than that the green texture can be now stretched to the whole screen which gives me the great precision of pointing with S Pen, so now the cursor hits exactly where I point with S Pen very precisely! This is great.
What is more important is that it feels like the game now runs twice faster because all the menus opens and closes lightning fast.
Again thanks a ton for your work!

P.S.
How about Ultima 7, would be awsome Razz
And I would prey for you if you could port Fallout with SDL. It is already possible to run on android with QEMU but it's slow and not stable, the direct port like you did with JA2 would simply made my life, cause I'am huge fan of these 2 games (JA2 & Fallout).

any ideas?

Oh and my vote goes to Fallout/Fallout2 as well. _loved_ those games!

Is there some way we could thank you for the good work?

@wortek:
Glad to hear that it works now. But is it really only possible to calibrate the pen with a rooted phone? Seems a little odd to me.

Ultima7 is already ported! Exult has two versions for android, one based on java/dalvik and one based on SDL/C++. The sdl version is found somewhere in the exult forums. It plays fine.
I can also suggest LandsOfLore with the SCUMMVM on android.

@senectus:
I never fixed the load button in the main menu. You have to go from the main menu to preferences->load saved game.

Regarding Fallout: I know of no SDL port or any opensource Version, so you might have to stick with qemu for now.

Quote:

Umm, you could help testing when I decide to do the next port. Someone still needs to play through JA2 on Android so I know that it works. Someone could do a youtube video of the port.
OR
just play the game and be happy Smile I did this port for fun!

Any idea's on how to scroll around the map without using the minimap?
The minimap is not terribly accurate and makes for frustrating gameplay.

Oh, and I'd be happy to beta test when i have time. Do you keep a blog or RSS feed for tracking your work?

I think the case was in the firmware or the kernel, I think it's because sumsung did a little adjustment to the S Pen drivers or something like that. What I did is changed the kernel from KKA to LB1 and install the ICS which might have a better drivers for the S Pen. Not sure about that.

Thanks for the link to Exult I didn't know Ultima was ported to android, gota test it Wink

I'm always happy to test next versions and all the other games you will be porting.
And again thanks for the great work.

The minimap is not terribly accurate and makes for frustrating gameplay.

I use the touchpad mode (relative mouse cursor movement) so I can move the cursor to the screen edges to scroll. Depending on you phone I suggest you try the same.
Alternatively you can position softkeys for the cursor-keys to scroll that way, but it takes some effort to get the keys positioned nicely. If you have a phone with a hardware joystick or trackball-thingy you can use that too if you configure it to map on the cursor-keys.

@all:
Regarding other ports, I will continue the Dune2 port after I'm done with my master thesis. And if the Syndicate Linux port is done someday I might try that one as well.

You can step by this site from another porter (lubomyr) http://anddev.at.ua/ he also did some nice ports like SCUMMVM_sdl (play DayOfTheTentacle, MonkeyIsland, LegendOfKyrandia, LandsOfLore, etc.), Milkytracker, C64emu, AmigaEmu, Dosbox and quake1. (I'm not affiliated with him in any way)
And the quake3 port is worth checking out too http://code.google.com/p/kwaak3/ runs extremely smooth, but is very hard to play without an bluetooth joystick.

I currently don't have a blog/website and prefer to post on the ported games' forums if possible. That way I do not have to worry about maintenance and users can support each other more easily.

As expected. JA2 has to be compiled explicitly for each language. I only compiled for English.
The problem - as you can read in the early posts - is that JA2 uses an outdated data type for 16bit-characters which caused a hell lot of trouble. So I removed all support for it in the android version.
Maybe there will be time to fix that stuff later.

You can however use the German/Russian/French audio files together with the English version.

OK I got it working pretty much the way I want it! Thanks heaps!

One thing I would like to request, though I'm not sure if you can do it, is the ability to scroll the map around by using two (or three) fingers on the screen.

The moving the cursor to the edge of the viewable map makes for a hell of a lot of scraping the screen.

BTW guys, this tool is very helpful for batch renaming (ie all lowercase) ***note, a mate of mine wrote it***

@senectus:
Hmm, this could have a number of reasons. You are the first one to report this error, so I assume it does not directly have to do with the port.
Please check if you SD-card is working correctly, sometimes the cheaper ones tend to break. Also consider to copy the datafiles from your computer to the SD-card again, in case there was a writing error due to too fast device removal or any other circumstance.
Your original datafiles might be broken too, you can upload a list of your datafiles and sha2 or md5 checksums.
If the error can be reproduced please save directly before it occurs and then upload your savefile, I can then try if the same error occurs with my phone too.
You can also try to load the error.sav if one got generated by renaming it to a normal savefile. But error.sav should only be a last resort, because inconsistencies tend to happen when using an error save file.

I'm impressed at how smooth the instalation went. The game works very good, didn'T expect that either.
Already got Drassen on my HTC DHD

Some Problems I have encountered so far:

Savegames can only be loaded through the options menu (Main menu entry stays greyed out)
no quicksave/quickload (I don't really care about that)
Imput problems
- Aiming (can't seam to find any reasonable setting for that)
- Running/walking (needs a double click which is kinda hard to do)
- Scrolling with the accelerometer is sometimes a bit broken (starts scrolling without doing anything)
- doesn't differentiate between one and two fingers on screen (two-finger rotation -> does the actions for one finger on screen and the one for second finger on screen)
exiting the game sometimes takes up to 40 seconds

I think a lot could be done if Jagged Alliance would allow us to remap the keys for actions (I can't input a "tab" with the onscreen keyboard....)

That is a bug I hope to tackle in the final release.

I suggest using your Volume keys as LMB and RMB. That way you can click around smoothly. Also consider using relative mouse movement (trackpad mode).
Quote:

Try holding RMB when you have selected a merc to set 'run' to default action.
Quote:

You can set the threshold in the options menu. I don't know if a more recent version of PelyaSDL handles it better.

That, sadly, is a PelyaSDL issue.

Ja2android uses a lot of RAM, which is allocated by the DalvikVM and is cleared by the garbage collector. But it should not take that long. Anyone else experiencing this behaviour?

You can map up to 6 freely placable on-screen soft buttons with any SDL_key you like. It can all be found - though not very intuitively - in the settings on the boot-screen.

the remapping of JA2 was actually meant for combinations, such as Ctrl-S for example. if I could just place it on...I don't know...the "<", then I could map one of my hardkey to it and bam...I have my quicksave Wink

[Edit]
Oh....and by the way...I really really am loving this. Just a week ago I was talking to a friend at how awesome old games would be on tablet/smartphones. Command&Conquer, Starcraft, JA2, Anno and so on...

He guys, I am trying to install this port to Motorola xoom WiFi but I can not get this thing working. I have an original copy of the game and installed it on win 7. I batched all the data files lowercase and put the data files in the jagged map as described in the topic.

After starting the game I can configure the controls and then goes to the next screen where it says saving. After that the program stops and it goes to my homescreen. No error messages displayed.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here?

Please provide a logcat output from the crash, so that we can see what errors are reported by ja2android.

I hope you are using the English version of the original JA2 since it is the only one that works (no german/russion/french at the moment).

He thanks for the help. I have an english version and its working now. Somehow there were some missing files in the data map. Its running now and the controls are working well. The graphics looks nice but the game is running realy slow. Still playable but with a fix for running faster it would be great. Any suggestions there?

@Waterbaan

Nice to hear it runs on your tablet now. But it should run very smooth even on the slowest devices of the android family. Please check your config for video on the start screen (where you can set up controls), try out different combinations (like smoothing on/off, threaded video on/off, 4:3 on/off, etc.). You should be able to get it running at full speed. I've not had any reports of slowdowns since RC2 is out.
You might also consider manually stopping CPU intense apps running in the background, if you have any (firefox/fennec(!), music player, etc.)

(EDIT:) You can also deactivate the in-game music by deleting/renaming the music.slf file in your data directory. This might also bring a small speed increase, but as already said: it should not be required. Your Xoom has a better CPU than my phone, and probably even dual-core.

Tthanks for the help, I've been busy lately so I will try if the options you gave me will work for me. By the way what do you mean with rc2? That's a binary file right? Maby it's a little bit dump question but I wanna know what te file does. Which rc2 should I load? My Motorola xoom does not support the file either. Thanks al lot for the help.

RC2 = Release Client Candidate 2, just a way to name versions.
