Every time I come back to this board it has undergone some serious changes! Wow!

I can't seem to post a topic in the UC section so I'll try it here. I downloaded UC, and the fix but when I try to launch the game I get a message: "Cannot init FONT file FONTS\LARGEFONT1.sti"

Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to fix this. I have been through numerous JA versions (over the years) and want to go back and play UC again. I downloaded it from GOG and am trying to run it on Windows 7. Most other GOG downloads run fine and on my older XP when I try to run an older JA (Talonsoft) and run UC I get a similar message ("Cannot init FONT file FONTS\BLOCKFONT.sti")

Beats the heck out of me. Any ideas?
Thanks for your patience.

Interesting!

Does this mean I will never get to play UC again? The link you gave, do I download it and install it into one of the folders under JA2?
Thanks,

LokiOne

nope - and it's a vanilla bug - this file is a content of ja2 not of the mod.

the folder 'fonts' has to be in the folder 'data'. make sure there is only one folder 'fonts'. 'data\fonts\fonts\...' is one too many.

somehow the exe can't read fonts.slf properly (it happens with other fonts as well) so you either need a new fonts.slf (=reinstall) or you pretend to have modded fonts (=creating a 'fonts'-folder)

Thanks for your quick response. I'll give it a shot when I get off work and return home.

There seems to be a lot of dead links scattered across this board. For old timers like me (my first console game was PONG, then Colecovision, Atari 800, Mac, Apple IIGS, 286, 386, 486, PII and on up to my dual core) the world of computer games just keeps getting faster and faster with lots of casualties scattered along the way. No more having to tweek config.sys and bat files because today's computers do a lot of the heavy lifting for you (some might say taking some of the fun/challenge/frustrations out of the experience).

JA, JA2, Deadly Games and the like are like old friends and sometimes I just want to settle in with a good old game full of challenge and variety and the Bear Pit has always provided the best support to one of my loves.

Thanks for your help!

When I first broke out of the early MS world my employer went to the Mac environment so we were sent to Egghead U to learn that tool for our investigations. I went through a Mac, a Mac+ and then a Mac II. And when they acquired a company heavily into the PC realm they overhauled their old Mac network and went to the PC. Back to school we went to learn the early Windows and their applications. Lots of free expensive training so I can't complain!

My 30 years working alongside the Bureau was interesting and gave me many opportunities to use my computer skills. Now I am semi-retired and looking forward to the day I can just stay home and play all day long.

Needless to say I am peeved! I got home, loaded the font file and booted the game. I did the usual and arrived at the airport and saved several times. I then quit out of the game and later in the evening I went back to continue playing and when I tried to load any of the 6 saves I got the "ERROR LOADING THE GAME" message everytime. The loading bar would go through one color but about 1/3 of the way through the second time it would stop and the afore mentioned error message wold pop up. Every attempt to load any of the 6 saves always resulted in the same message. I can start a new game but when I save it, it too fails to load.

Any ideas again would be appreciated.

Ok, you are using Windows Vista/7 and have installed the game in the "Program Files" folder. Move the game's directory to another directory ("C:\Games\Jagged Alliance 2" for example) and copy your saves from "C:\Users\JMich\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\SavedGames" to "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\SavedGames", replacing "JMich" with your username (computer username) and "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold" with the directory you installed JA2 on. If you are using a 32-bit OS, remove the (x86) after "Program Files"

Alternatively, run JA2.exe as administrator.

Darn, now I have to wait until this evening to go home and give this a try. Thanks!

So I will try moving things around first but I have yet to figure out how to "run something as administrator". I am an old XP guy but when it was time to replace my slightly slower dual core with a faster version I found that XP was no longer available/supported by my local computer store and was forced to go to Windows 7. We use Win 7 at work but it is a new world and I have yet to learn how to navigate it's quirks. Running as an administrator requires what?

Thanks again!

Right Click the shortcut, choose "Run as administrator"
Alternatively, right click->properties->Compatibility and check "Run as administrator".
UAC will appear whenever you run it, asking you to confirm that you want to run as administrator.

Best to move the game to another location.

P.S. The AppData folder mentioned in the previous post is a hidden folder, if you can't see it either choose to "show hidden files and folders" (same way as in XP) or type the folders in the address bar.

Thanks, I was wondering where the AppData folder came from. I tend to forget that many items in Windows are hidden. I'll try these tonight (it's just after noon here).
