Hi guys,

for creating a mod, scripting certain situations like a dialogue or some sort of that is necessary. I was wondering if there's an editor out there to create scripted events or do I have to mess with the source-code in order to get such things working. I never played a user-made mod so I can't tell if this has ever been tried at all. Some sort of guide or tutorial would be very appreciated Smile. I got several ideas for short scenarios, which I want try to realise.

there are plenty of editors, but it's all in the process of being transferred to lua-scripting - so you better start to learn thatone Wink

There are a few editors for scripting events. Using them is quite challenging since there has never been a tutorial about this and some of the guys who know most about this no longer post on these boards. Basically getting ahold of one of these editors from kermi's site http://kermi.pp.fi/JA_2/Modding_Tools/ and try working with it. It seems to come much more easily to some people than others. I really fail hard at this aspect.

I wouldn't advise waiting around for pie in the sky unless you enjoy disappointment.

Thanks to you both, guys. I sneaked a bit through the forums and came across a post of the Scorpion, where he wrote down the pieces of knowledge he gathered during his modding work. It's somehow inapprehensible to me that such a crucial part of modmaking didn't get more attention from the community. Either it is really that complicated or the majority of the community is fine with some new weapons and gadgets. I would really love to see the 1.13-team or perhaps the SMP-guys working on an externalisation or something like that but that's just me dreaming Smile.
I still have to ask one question though, because you mentioned the lua-scripting language. Was the action scripting in Ja2 written in this language in the first place, did someone port it to it or is someone doing the porting at this very moment?
I'm asking because if someone did the porting, there had to be some kind of research done on the topic, which could be very helpful trying to understand better how the system works... and of course save me some time!

To my knowledge lua scripting for this bit involves people trying to transfer the scripts to a different format without really understanding how they work. I hope someone will correct me if I am mistaken. It seems to me the more expedient way would be for someone to figure out how the scripts work and make a utility that actually helps modders do what they want to do.

I mean, back when the original editors were made the source code was not even remotely available. Except for people like scorpion and Will Gates we have gained absolutely no ground since these editors were made.
