What program?

I only have paint and that was not a option.

In any event, thanks for converting it up for me.

Edit:

Nope. You are wrong. It is messed up now.

ingame? what are the parameters to use it ingame? starting with the size ...

it's most likely somewhat to big -> and therefore gets mincemeated

it should also be too wide - ???

you should probably ransack some threads for examples and/or ask a certain cangoroo for advice on thatone

I used a perfectly good pcx file and converted it into jpg. The only difference is that it is jpg now and not pcx. The convert back changed the colors.

I can not seem to get a hold of the guy who does these things.

to add that tao - i guess - why do you do that in a jpg - for heaven's sake, jpgs are bullshit and convert it back - use tiff, psd, png just any LOSSLESS format - never work in lossy formats - convert what you have done to the lossy format ja2 can read in this case why didn't you add that tao-tattoo in the pcx? why convert it to crab before you start?

I used an online editor. It was the only way. I had no idea about lossless and lossy.

Hold up. I used the online editor to add the tat.

I have an option to convert it to:

JPG
PNG
GIF
BMP
PDF
TIFF

Which is the best for pcx transfer? The pixel height and width are correct.

In your opinion, which looks better? The sepia or the first one?

here you go.
http://www.mediafire.com/?p6p1t1cdgc89j2j

PCX files are not all the same. The Desktop file has to use 8 bit color depth. If you use 24 or 32 color depth, which photoshop and most other tools will assume to use, the game will wrongly assume that the red value for one pixel will represent the 8 bit color of the entire pixel. The green value would be considered to be the 8 bit value of the neighborpixel and so on, so the picture will be screwed up. The secret is the color reduction to 8 bit before converting to pcx, so the correct pcx format will be used.

Save as bitmap in paint, edit, select all, copy, paste over the PCX. works every time easy peasy. simples.

That's not the way to do it. You will most likely lose some colours and thereby reduce the quality of the picture. When you paste the new picture over the old pcx file, the palette will remain the same and your graphics program will have the daunting task of squeezing your 24/32 bit picture through an 8 bit hole. In case of taos particular picture, you will get an especially bad result. Taos picture uses a lot of red, yello and brown tones, while the original pcx picture has only one tone for red and uses the remaining colour solts of the palette for different shades of gray.

I don't get that quality drop at all. You sure your paint defaults are set up right? Then again I normally copy the edited bitmap in paint and paste over the pcx in photoshop. *)

If you don't get the quality drop, without any questions about colour reduction or dithering techniques means, that your graphics program has switched to RGB mode. This is no problem for the pcx file, because the file format allows for this. The ja2.exe however, always assumes that you feed it an 8 bit pcx file and it will interprete the desktop.pcx as 8 bit file, no matter what. In game, Taos desktop converted to RGB pcx will look something like this:

PS: Happy birthday from me too. Wink
