I thought I ask. Haven't been here for a long time, so I don't know how far the modding goes these days.

What I am asking is, if there is someone here, who already tried and made even a little piece of merc animations. The thing is, I've just found out, that adding new animations to the code, handling them etc is actually easy. I can code it, but drawing isn't really my competence.

I always thought that it is impossible to add new animations. So I ask: Is there anyone here proficient with digital drawing, who would be able to draw the little merc anims? (As GIF format at best. There are tools for easy converting STIs to GIFs, which makes everything a LOT easier, btw. )

Here are some things I found on russian forum:

http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/M_Federung_SW_Demo_10.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/Boat_N_Dranik.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/Erde_SW_Dranik_plawno.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/Raven_Kolben_NO.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/MG_Strong_Magic.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/M_Knife_Komplex_Demo_Navy_SW.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/F_Ninja_jump_SO_Demo.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/M_Knife_Komplex_SW_Demo.gif
http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/S_Somersault_Blue.gif http://forum.ja2.su/Attach/Images/heavy2v2.gif

Would be great if I find an animator which would join forces with me. I could code load of things.

I wish I was, but I seriously suck in arts. In particular the heavy MG anim is something I desperatly wish to have.

Actually I see a way how to make the Heavy MG thing working. I would create a sort of NPC with specific bydytype - MG. This Entity would be unmovable, but could turn around and shoot if manned. It would be able to accept a soldier as "passenger" (like a vehicle), who get an "item" in his main weapon slot and could shoot with it. It would allow to create different types of Heavy MGs, but most importantly, it would allow it to be placed in the map editor.
It would need some serious coding effort, but it is doable. However, I am only in the process of making the ability to grapple an enemy during HtH fight, so might take some time till I'll be able to touch it.

sounds great - would it be possible to have an item rubber-boat that instead of swimming makes it possible to to cross water faster if being in a mercs inventory? guess i don't need to say which animation i have in mind Very Happy

I am curious if each frame was hand drawn or if some trick was used - animating quickly for example in after effects is not a difficult task, but id imagine it'd be hard to achieve the same animation style as in JA2

Yeah, exactly what I am curious about too.

I wonder if it would be ok if we "steal" it to 1.13.

I think the theory that they're done in a 3D application like Lightwave or Maya is probably the most likely theory - they're very well reproduced at all angles which would be really easy to do in a 3D package and they do give me to vibe that they were done in 3D

Isn't it rather awkward that they made 2D game via 3D system? Why not to make the whole game 3D in the first place then?
As far as I remember, in 1998+- the 3D technology in games were very basic and something like fully 3D figure models were rare or none (mostly characters were still a "painting on moving wall" placed in 3D environment). But I don't know.

It isn't so important anyway. Important is, how can I make those animations now.

I could probably help with this, if I could get a decent enough 3d model for Blender3d...

As you say Sandro, 3D technology was limited back then which is why it was more than likely pre-rendered - which is where a 3D package is used to 'paint out' animation frames for a 2D engine, no doubt with some nice retouching on the way. The 3D would have been used to get the isometric angle correct to start with to save on time, than drawing it all by hand.

You should be able to find plenty of free models out there Ran. Not sure what format Blender can use, but most 3D packages can import and export different formats. Try places like Turbosquid.com or artist-3d.com, otherwise just type in 'free 3D models' into Google for plenty of other places. For the scale of the redshirts you wouldn't even need textures, just a half decent model with coloured materials applied should do.

Anyone for Mortal Kombat? Okay wrong game, but I'm sure you could edit one of the characters to something more suitable. It's Blender format too.

This sounds great! May be, that way we could also have other stationary weapons like cannons? This would be a much more suitable replacement for the stationary tanks.

Hmmm, I was thinking of using CounterStrike models as a basis (armor and guns!), but I think we will be lacking in the animation department - no climb, jump over, punch, etc. But that could be remedied with dedicated work.

Hm, I remember when I was working in game development as game designer for several years, our 2D artist was easily drawing many 2D pictures with character models from scratch. He never needed any 3D base for that, and they always looked pefect.

Ran:
I don't think we need animations for those things (climbing, jumping etc.), I don't need major JA2 animation revolution. I just need several new animations in the same style for specific things. We may as well use existing animations as a base and redraw it.
I am already trying to do so.. have to learn drawing in the process though. Smile
