Well it looks cool, but it certainly reminds me of that Russian online game. (The name escapes me at the moment) Total...something...

Mercenaries do not look like themselves.

sheesh you guys are hard to please Smile
when we started here, everyone was afraid, the game would be like facebook. Now we have got a turn based game looking respectable (I will post some more shots tonight) and you complain about the mercs not exactly looking like themselves? ah well, at least we try Smile

Long time lurker had to register when I saw this. Those screenshots looks amazing! I have to say you guys totally get what Jagged Alliance should look like! I hope you nail the gameplay aswell. Judging by these screens alone I think it's a shame you don't make Jagged Alliance 3...

Well, I agree these two are not ideal- we will work on the pics anyway, but it is not easy, since the old ones actually have very little detail - once yopu do add more detail, they sometimes look different.
We are also going for the "slightly older" version, where some of the guys have aged a little, but it isn't easy to pin the look.
Room for improvement.

If you could see the game, it is already fun even at the early stage with the Ai already having different behavior patterns for different enemy types and the various guns. Lots of stuff still to be implemented, but the base game is solid.

well, yes and no- in JAO we actually get away with being relatively true to the original (minus a feature or two), if we did JA3 I am sure they would want us to include all kinds of fancy real time stuff and other things. JAO actually allows us to have more freedom to expand the gameplay and care less about even fancier explosions and super duper graphics - not saying ours are shabby Smile

I am not saying WE would want to do that, I am just saying that -looking at JA:BIA- I am happy we can do JAO the way we do it. A lot of people have doubts a turn-based game can make enough money in retail to be worth doing (look at Heroes of Might and Magic I say, but then again, there are very few other examples of games today being internationally successful...)

And I can tell you one thing - it isn't easier doing it turnbased. RTS engines, AI and a lot of other stuff is easy to find out of the box. Turn based AI and the HUGE amount of balancing involved in all the modifiers possible is more expensive in the end.

So while for JAO we said from the get go: "It has to be turn based and deep enough, anything else won't do", I guess for JA3 it would be much harder to argue with the powers that be, who, if in doubt, often go for eye candy over gameplay depth. Because it is easier to do PR for it Wink

Anyways, not my decision to make- we are happy to try and make JAO a true JA2 successor.

on second thought, if our game became a BIG commercial success, people may reconsider - so this is your chance to get a better JA3 by paying us loads of money for JAO...ehm, too obvious? Smile

The character come from the front of the game, are they supposed to be from the old cast or are they new mercs? Do you have any bios for those mercs?

For an online game it sure looks cool.
Not interested in looks as much as into gameplay though. That's the part where stuff really matters.
Details are also important-even I find time to browse the AIM alumni or the current mercs' bios.

I'm putting big hopes for JAO and hope it'll be fun to play once it comes out.

Not at all- we may integrate social functions at a later date (so you get friend's list for your Multiplayer etc.), but this is a real game and will be released by gamigo - a client and browser games publisher.

okay that is good for me because I don't use the data collecting sites like Facebook.

I may be a potential player.

...but first...

What is your pricing model going to be like? Are players going to have to pay for the initial download? Do they pay for content either normal and unique? Do they pay subscription?

In my eyes the most fair and the "right" route to go would be to have a one time pay for the initial download. This would keep everyone on an equal playing field and would not nickel and dime players.

The game graphics reminded me of "Total Influence". Will it be like that?

Pricing is free to play plus micropayments, all content is free but you can improve progression speed and buy you better chances of "winning" a mission through better weapons etc. But if you don't need that, you have good chances of not having to pay at all unless you want your mercs to become permanent (so you don't have to spend in game money to rent them)

Hmm, I have only played Total Influence way back and for a short time. My answer would be: It will be like JA2 with fewer actions initially (we plan on lockpicking etc. as the game goes on, but will likely start with mainly combat related actions) and less opening of containers but much more missions and an actual HQ.

Well, first of all the screenshots are looking very good. The atmosphere and colors are well adjusted, gives me the feeling from JA2! That alone makes me wiggel and jiggel!

The Merc Pictures are looking superb! I love how your artists draw the paintings in a very very cool way!

I don't want a JA2 1.13 1:1 clone, so little improvements like in the UI are very welcome!

I would love to see more details on the Mercs too, like Ivan wearing his Russian hat, or Bull with a Bigger/Badass body!

Man i cannot wait to fight against other players on these maps! Bashing all the casual n00bs Very Happy

may I ask what you base this judgement on? We are always interested in improving, but a generic criticism like this makes it hard to find a way to do that.
Looking at JA2 vs JAO, you think our settings are bland in the sense of colourless? Or uninteresting as opposed to JA 2 maps?
We do have loads more variety in the game (underground bunkers, missile silos, log cabins, rebel camps in the jungle, palaces and high tech research facilties, to name a few).

And to clarify- bitcomposer has licensed out the online game to gamigo - we started our working for bc but had a different vision for the game (as can be seen in JA:BIA compared to JAO) and are very happy to have received a chance by both companies to work with gamigo on this.

So please don't throw out the baby with the bathwater...

I CAN'T throw out the baby with the bathwater. It keeps getting caught up in the pipes.

It wasn't critique, just an honest opinion. In my eyes Jagged Alliance is all about semi-dictatorship, guys in goofy clothing (as in who cares what LBE they have equipped, I wanna see burly men in wife beaters) and fun/interesting mercs. Plus the occasional dab of pokes and prods at the older games.

Games worked on for decades, not just years. I imagine it all started with kids doodling up their own soldiers/mercenaries/tough guys. "This guy, Jeb, he's good with shotguns! But he's terrible with bazookas because bla bla bla. Oh, and he can't stand working with guys who have eyepatches because they remind him of his pirate dad who used to beat him."
Stuff like that, but a bit more polished. Wink

Same goes for the arsenal. I used to fill huge papers with all kinds of "cool guns" I'd seen in movies and whatnot when I was a kid. All with different pros and cons. Realism barely had anything to do with it but it still worked, as does it in Jagged Alliance. 1.13 went one step further and proved that you can do more with the same formula... and it also proved that too many features and items become can easily become a hassle.

Anyway, what I'm seeing from the screenshots isn't much. The UI screams simplicity and that's fine if you manage to pull it off. But it won't be Jagged Alliance with such a mix. Not anymore, at least. Playing JA2 for more than a decade has definitely made me jaded when it comes to JA3 or any other sort of sequel/spin-off. It has to add to the experience, not tone it down. Simply doing loads of new locations won't cut it.

Oh, and the muzzle flashes are just too crazy. Razz

Thanks for the feedback- this we can work with Smile
The muzzle flashes are over the top - but so is JA2 (in my mind) - it mixes a high level of detail and and apparent realism (weapons etc.) with over the top, larger than life characters.
goofy clothing we have planned, but we do also want to broaden the horizon somewhat extending to other missions aside Arulco all over again.
Honestly: it will not be JA v 1.13. It couldn't - people have worked on this since JA vanilla and why should we simply remake that with nicer graphics or how could we even? The only way I see it is to make a new JA which shares some of the traits of the old one but also innovates or adapts where it makes sense. And UI definitely had room for improvements Wink

What I am saying is this: If JA2 (and mods) for you are the best games ever, we wouldn't dream of competing against those. We could only ever loose. If you think a game "like" JA, sharing some of its traits, may be attractive to you, I think we are a solid offer. It isn't JA3 - we never set out for it to be that - but I think it does try and capture some of the spirit behind the originals.

That being said, if you don't agree after playing it, since it is free to play, you have only lost a bit of time...

hmm,
I am not distancing myself from anything (and I assume you did not use the royal you as a plural when you wrote the post, so you did not only mean Peal, who does not work for us - to my knowledge). I am simply stating that we had different visions of how a JA game could look like today (the old turn based vs plan and go argument) and we wanted to explore our own route. This is why I am grateful to both companies for giving us the chance to work on JAO.

And I fail to see how you could infer we have copied the works of people on the game's mods? We (as much as anyone here, I would assume)have our own take on how a modern day JA could look like. I was personally very excited to work on a JA game with our studio and I can honestly say there are a lot of ardent JA players in the team. So of course the mods will influence some of our thoughts on what works and what does not, but I cannot remember one instance where we said- great, let's grab that idea and just port it over.

We are in the business of developing games for some time now, so I think I can state that we do have some experience in creating games ourselves. And personally I just wanted to do a decent turn based game for some time now, I am getting to old for these flashy modern RTS Wink
