Here's a post to open a discussion about the "best" weapons in each category. There is no up-to-date (or at least, I have not found one) weapons list with NCTH values, so this thread should help us out (because comparing weapons in game, say in Bobby Ray's, is not very convenient).

I think that the categories should be along the lines of:
1) Revolver.
2) Pistol.
3) Hold-Out Backup Weapon (May be either a Pistol, a Machine Pistol or a Revolver, I think).
4) Shotgun.
5) Rifle.
6) Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle.
7) Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle.
Cool Anti-Material Sniper Rifle.
9) Machine Gun.
10) Assault Rifle (Bullpup ARs of all sorts, carbine versions of 7.62mm Battle Rifles, and pretty much all 5.56mm ARs).
11) Battle Rifle or Automatic DMR (Essentially, these are the full-sized 7.62mm weapons which take a large amount of APs to ready but have a range up there with some sniper rifles. Things like the FN FAL, G3, etc).

Here's what I found out so far, based on these categories. I am not filling all of them up because I do not have access to all the weapons yet in the game.

1) Udar - Pros: Awesome punch, reasonably fast to fire, available early. Cons: Small magazine capacity.
2) FN Five-seveN - Pros: Very quick to fire, good attachments. Cons: Availability of weapon and ammo.
3) PSM - Pros: Very quick to fire and has a very small size. It fits in a tiny pocket so it does not consume space better used for other things. Cons: Low damage, short range.
4) HK CAWS - Pros: Massive damage, good armor penetration. Cons: Availability of weapon and ammo.
5) M1 Garand - Pros: Long range, can fit a x7 scope, semi-auto, hard-hitting. Cons: Slow to ready, small magazine capacity, ammo is not incredibly common (but is pretty cheap to buy).
6) No opinion yet.
7) No opinion yet.
Cool No opinion yet.
9) HK MG36 RAS - Pros: Relatively light-weight, quick firing, good ammo capacity, can be fitted with a GL. Cons: Lacks the hitting power of the 7.62mm rounds.
10) Steyr AUG A3 - Pros: Good range, quick to ready and fire, more ammo than the 7.62mm rifles, can be fitted with just about every attachment under the sun, best accuracy of all ARs (at least those I've seen). Cons: Availability of weapon and ammo.
11) No opinion yet.

Runners up for ARs:
HK G3KA4 - Just a tiny bit less accurate than the AUG A3, it fires the more plentiful 7.62mm NATO ammunition. It can also be used with the old aimpoint projector which has a pretty long ranged beam. This rifle is really a do-it-all weapon in the game.
FR Ordinance MC51 - A bit faster than either the G3KA4 and the AUG A3, but having a shorter range, this shorty 7.62mm weapons still packs one hell of a punch.

Go ahead folks, what are your opinions on the guns? As you see I am a bit biased towards the harder hitting 7.62mm weapons, so it would be interesting to see what other people think.

I think with new inventory, you should consider a category for smallest pocket weapon. I nominate the Glock 19 as it has a large capacity, can fit a silencer and match (for 2 round burst) or night sights, can take AET and Gold Saber ammo, and is very fast firing.

There's a lot of very similar guns, but here's my preferences.

Revolver: Udar.
Pistol: 5-7, or the russian that fires 9x21mm.
Holdout: PSM.
MP/SMG: Veresk. Would be the MP7 if the ammo were a bit easier to come by (but they're nearly identical anyway).
Shotgun: CAWS, or the AA-12 from AIMNAS (or whatever mod that it's in) when that will be released.
Rifle: Beowulf. A 1-hit wonder that can take nearly all attachments, is accurate and has an acceptable range (esp with Extender).
Semi Sniper: One of the Dragunov variants, or the KAC SR-25
Bolt Sniper: Erma-something (I think it's called). .338 with a sick range.
Anti material Sniper: I never use one of those, so dunno
MG: HK 21E. Can take all the attachments that matters, hits like a truck but is on the heavy side. A runner-up would be the Pechnereg if it could take a scope.
AR: Undecided between FAL OSW, the HK 417 or the G11. If limited to 5.56, then the FAMAS.
BR/DMR: SCAR H SV.

Bolt action = every rifle which you have to rechamber manually after each shot.
AMR = big caliber rifles, mostly 12.7x99mm (.50BMG) and 12.7x108mm.

Both can, but don't have to apply to the same rifle. E.g. an M40 is a bolt action rifle, but its 7.62x51mm caliber is too small to be called AMR. The M82A2 is an AMR (firing .50BMG) but semi automatic. The KSVK falls into both categories.

The military calls it an Anti-material rifle because it would be inhumane to say that you were shooting people with it!

1) Revolver: U-94S Udar: It's common enough and packs a nice punch.

2) Pistol: Glock 17: It's fast, takes basically every attachment and uses the 9x19mm ammo which is readily available and comes in every variation including AET.

3) Hold-Out Backup Weapon (May be either a Pistol, a Machine Pistol or a Revolver, I think): Glock 18: For the combination of speed and ammunition.

3b) SMGs : (I use these for CQC almost exclusively, rather than MPs or Pistols.)
FN P90: It has very good stats and there is AET ammo available, if at a very steep price.
Magpul PDR-D: Has even better stats (esp. damage) than the FN P90, but can't be reasonably silenced and only has AP/HP ammo.
Honorable Mention: FAMAE SAF Silenciada (for being really silent)

4) Shotgun: HK Caws: The damage is just too good to vote for anything else.

5) Rifle: Basically every rifle in this category is outclassed by either assault rifles or sniper rifles.
.50 Beowulf Rifle: For damage and the attachments it takes. The small magazine and it's unique ammo are a big drawback, however.

6) Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle: Knight SR-25: I prefer this to the HK PSG1 due to it's weight. If this isn't an issue for you, then the HK PSG1 wins hands down.

7) Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle: CZ 700: Ahead of the M40A1 only because it takes a larger magazine.

Cool Anti-Material Sniper Rifle: OSV-96: Highest accuracy of any semi-automatic sniper rifle with a damage of 60(!).

9) Machine Gun: Every 5.56 LMG is outclassed by assault rifles like the Tavor TAR 21 in my opinion.
HK 21E: It's heavy as hell, but takes the best attachments of any 7,62mm LMG.

10) Assault Rifle (Bullpup ARs of all sorts, carbine versions of 7.62mm Battle Rifles, and pretty much all 5.56mm ARs).
Steyr AUG A3: Pretty much beats every other assault rifle, if it wasn't for the unique ammo.
Tavor TAR 21: The best 5,56 weapon in the game.

11) Battle Rifle or Automatic DMR (Essentially, these are the full-sized 7.62mm weapons which take a large amount of APs to ready but have a range up there with some sniper rifles. Things like the FN FAL, G3, etc).
FN SCAR-H SV: Mostly for it's superior accuracy.
